In reply to: [Resolved] Copying functions.php to child theme
Unlike CSS, which a child theme will override the parent theme files, a child theme will utilize both functions.php files.
See the WordPress Codex: https://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes#Using_functions.php
And the Buddypress Codex: https://codex.buddypress.org/legacy/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/So don’t copy it over. The functions are being applied in your child theme already. If there are additional functions you want to add in your child theme, add them to the child theme functions.php file.
In reply to: Filtering activity streamIf you want to block them entirely, you could use something like this:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-block-activity-stream-types/
I had r-a-y develop this for our site. It’s not in the repo, but it’s a thing of beauty.
In reply to: Add media problem after upgrading to WP 3.5Probably WP related, but to check, deactivate BP and BBP and try again. If it’s still an issue, redirect your questions to the wordpress.org forum. BP and bbp don’t have native media upload functionality (beyond avatars), so you are probably posting in the wrong locale. Hope you find a solution.
In reply to: How to remove BP LinksBuddypress doesn’t edit any of your templates. If you have deactivated the Buddypress Plugin, and deleted it from your plugins menu, and you still see a link, it’s in your theme. Not knowing where the link is that you are referring to, it’s difficult to tell you where it might be coming from, but I would suggest checking the footer.php file.
In reply to: /members/ show member listThat would be the default behaviour of that particular URL, as you’ll see from the test BP site: http://testbp.org/members
If you aren’t seeing that, perhaps something isn’t set up correctly. In the Buddypress Admin page, have you associated all of the components with WordPress pages?
In reply to: private messages sent to emailThat seems very odd. What are you using to re-route to gmail. Have you tried something like this: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-mail-smtp/
Thanks Tammi, That didn’t seem to work though.
In reply to: Public group without allowing everyone to joinYou can visit and navigate public groups; you can’t access private groups without becoming a member. I’m not sure how familiar you are with CSS, but you can drop that code in a CSS plugin. There is a WordPress.com CSS plugin that has been swallowed up by Jetpack, so if you use jetpack that works too.
In reply to: Public group without allowing everyone to joinIf every group is going to adhere to this type of invite only status, you could just hide the Join Group Button with CSS:
`a.group-button.join-group {
display: none;
}`The use Boone’s Invite Anyone Plugin to manage group membership
In reply to: BuddyPress Usernames Only not working since 1.6.1I paid @r-a-y to fix this for my community. I haven’t tested it on 1.6, but it was broken for me in 1.5.7 before he made some changes. I imagine he may have forgotten to push this update to the repo, or he didn’t want to add another plugin to his support plate. If it works for you great. If it doesn’t, a little cash goes a lot further than “it would be cool if…” with people contributing their gift for writing this stuff and sharing it out with the world.

You could download a plugin like this: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/safecss/ and add these lines of css to your style sheet, or If you have a created a child theme, you can just add these lines to your style.css file
`.field-visibility-settings-toggle {
display:none;
}.field-visibility-settings-notoggle {
display:none;
}`What version of Buddypress are you running? Since 1.6 the “Buddybar” has been replaced in exchange for the WordPress Admin Bar. When you initially upgrade from 1.5 to 1.6 it asks you which bar you want. Here’s a forum post on how to get it back that might be helpful.
In reply to: installed – what nextJust to re-iterate what @karmatosed is asking: you need to assign a wordpress page to the forums: http://screencast.com/t/ssfUP6jqLRWl
If that’s done, and you have FTP access to your site, you could check to see if the bb-config.php file has been created: it should be sitting at the root of your site (not inside a folder like wp-content). There is a link in this forum post to the bb-config file if you need to manually add it:
As an initial step, you need to activate this plugin: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-template-pack/ to create the folders necessary to make BP play nice with your theme. I will say that it is still clunky at that point, and may need some massaging. If you aren’t comfortable tweaking CSS, you may be better served choosing a Buddypress Theme, rather than trying to get a WordPress theme to work.
The Devs are aware of this and are currently building Theme Compatibility right into the plugin: you can read more about that here: http://wpmu.org/coming-in-buddypress-1-7-compatibility-for-all-wordpress-themes/ You may want to wait for this if you are integrating into an established site and you don’t want to change themes.
In reply to: How do I browse Plugins? I’m confusedAt the top of the Plugin page, you should see a few different filters to view plugins:
In reply to: Hide menu using css HELP!Have you every used Firebug before (it’s a Firefox addon). Install it and then you can inspect which class you are trying to hide.
That code looks to be for a widget, not a menu.
Once you figure out what you are trying to hide, download something like this so you don’t have to keep making the change everytime your theme updates https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/safecss/
Then put
whateveryouarehiding {display: none;}
to hide the menu.
In reply to: Comments/replys are brokenAre you seeing the same behaviour with the BP-Default theme? You need to first determine whether this is a theme issue or a plugin issue.
In reply to: Letting People choose a group on sign upYou might want to look at something like this: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-groupomatic/
In reply to: Server Error wp-admin after upgrading to 1.6You can probably get back into your admin panel by “deactivating” some or ALL of your plugins. You can deactivate all of them by just changing the name of the wp-content/plugins folder via an FTP software to something else (pluginz). If you are sure that it is Buddypress that is the offender, you can just go in and delete the wp-content/plugins/buddypress folder and see if that gets you back in (don’t worry: all your content from BP is stored in the MySQL table, which is separate from your plugins directory, so you won’t lose anything by deleting a plugin: you can always download another version through the plugin installer).
Alternatively, if you think it’s a theme issue, do the same thing only with the theme. Delete the Mingle folder in wp-content/themes and Buddypress should revert back to the BP-Default theme. If it doesn’t, delete Mingle and Buddpress (the plugin) and then re-download Buddypress and activate the default theme.
As Tammi pointed out, it looks like Mingle is compatible with 1.6. http://themeforest.net/item/mingle-multipurpose-wordpress-theme/235056
In reply to: How to change members link into my profile tabNot sure I understand your question here. Are you trying to hide the Members Directory, or are you trying to create a menu item that will take users to their own profile page?
You can add this code to your /wp-content/bp-custom.php file (if you don’t already have one and this is your first time adding custom code, just create the file through your FTP client)
`// disable the WP Toolbar and revert back to the BuddyBar
add_filter( ‘bp_use_wp_admin_bar’, ‘__return_false’ );`In reply to: [Resolved] How to remove admin bar link to dashboardIn your theme’s functions.php file, add this code:
`if (!current_user_can(‘manage_options’)) {
add_filter(‘show_admin_bar’, ‘__return_false’);
}`Can’t take the credit for this. Google is your friend:
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=show+toolbar+to+admin+onlyIn reply to: [Resolved] Cannot add a new forum topic in groupsI thought that integrating BBP 2.1.2 meant you didn’t have group forums, but a sitewide forum. In order to have forums that are connected to specific groups, I think you need the bb-config.php (bbpress version 1) file in your wp-content folder. This should be automagically created when you enable forums for groups: https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/#bp-group-forums
Having the newer version of bbpress (the full plugin available through the repo, and activated through your plugins menu) will create forums separate from the groups you create.
In reply to: 1.6 admin bar with 1.5.7If you haven’t create a file like this before, you need to make sure you have the php tags before and after the snippet:
`<?php
add_filter( ‘bp_use_wp_admin_bar’, ‘__return_true’ );
?>`
