    DJPaul … without wishing to cause offence,

    it is not that we “do not understand the BuddyPress Groups concept”, it is that we don’t think it is a good idea.

    Most of us think it is a much better idea to have the ability to have a general forum, or general forums, that all members can use without having to join a group.

    Think it through … it is a kind of Microsoft moment

    Spamming WPMY/BP is only popular enough because there are significant numbers of unmodified installations going on.

    Because there are a significant numbers of unmodified installations going on we … and our servers … all take a hit on this crap.

    So … disincentivize the platform by making that custom modification obligatory … for all … during the installation process.

    Spammers would face a pretty impossible or unrewarding task and move their attentions elsewhere.

    Does that work logically and technically?

    It is not good enough just to point out one can change it … the problem is not enough people are and hence we are all paying for the vulnerability of the platform.

    So shut that vulnerability off. Simple, no?

    If one uses both a separate standalone, and the built-in Buddypress forum, then does not one adds is yet another complication/confusion as regards searchability … or rather the lack of searchability … typical of WPMU/BP installs!?!

    And is left faces the uphill struggle of skinning it all to match?

    Let’s face it … the universal consensus or feedback is that it would be better to allow the creation of forums independent of groups.

    I have not read one voice in support of enforcing groups for forums and cannot see the purpose in doing so.

    @nonegiven

    It does not work to use a standalone forum because then you lose all the group making aspects of Buddypress.

      • BBpress does not skin to match Buddypress easily or well

      • They do not integrate together deeply.

      • You end up with two admin backends.

      • Plugins do not work across the board etc.

    In short, the skin approach is just faking it. It is not real. It is just a facade. I know because I have done it for years and it goes against my sense of integrity. It looks like a real website but it isn’t. And it is just all held by rubber bands behind the scenes.

    … or sell them them something they know they don’t want.

    Yes, I think you need to do more idiot testing … you are forgetting that as a techie you see and get things newcomers dont.

    • Its about clarity and simplicity.

    We plan to use Buddypress for a national NPO. It has local ‘groups’. Fine, a forum for each local group work well.

    People think of “groups” as ‘Groups’.

      We make a group for “tech support” … everyone wanting tech support has to join it where it would make more sense for only the ‘tech support group’ to be members giving advice to others (like groups or ranks in most forums).

      A non-tech person just wants to post to a general forum … you start forcing them to have to decide one forum or another and then they don’t know where to post when they have something that does not fit.

      We make a group for “newcomers” … people make their first post and then get stuck with the label for the rest of their membership.

    Each time any activity happens, it all pops up in the ‘activity’.

      Why does the limitation need to exist?

    Yes, partly it is nomenclature. But, partly, it is an unnecessary rigidity or encumbrance. Being forced to do it this way.

    Yes, it may not be a problem for developers to get but, yes, it is a problem for non-techie users. I know that. I have tested it. They don’t get it. it puts them off.

    As with the removal of the admin interface and plugin ability, effort has gone in to *downgrade* BBpress not enhance it and that goes against the grain.

    “Groups” are groups … not sub-forums.

    What recommendations are there for a captcha or a custom field creation that fits into the BP 1.2 registration process?

    I have tried a few plugins but they don’t work in BP 1.2 and dont appear in the registration.

    Yes, logging on and custom profiles etc are OK … but this open door approach DOES pass on a lot of janitorial work to site admins

    It seems strange that there is no default to offer some basic kind of obstacle to registration in the blog registration process … it is like building a house with wide open doors.

    Buddypress only adds layers on top of WPMU liabilities what with the attraction of Activity Directory and so on. It looks embarrassing to have it all advertised their by default.

    Perhaps one solution would be a default with which ALL users were automatically subscribed to a single shared sitewide group? … Custom forum groups could be created later.

    I find it hard to conceive of why a social networking site would NOT have a single place of communication, e.g. for tech support, newcomers, general discussion.

    Why does discussion have to locked up into custom made groups.

    This goes against the general level of understanding of most users many of whom will not get technical things and overcome difficulties like joining groups and so on.

    “KISS … keep it simple stupid.”

    Just a question, perhaps this should be on dev, but would it not be possible to have certain customizable elements which each and every installation of WPMU/BP had to create whilst doing an install, e.g. the name of the pages and hooks that the sploggers exploit?

    Yes, they know which pages and what code to look for … but if this was having to be changed during each and every installation, would it not work to stop them?

    Excuse my ignorance, we suffer sploggers but I have no idea what it is they are exploiting.

    If you use the standalone BBpress option, how can you make it use the same template as the integrated Buddypress/BBpress installation?

    Thanks

    BTW, yes, I understand the principles of customing skinning and css but what I am asking is that it surely must be a fairly simple implant or template linking.

    I am trying to make a general forum any member can access without having to join a group or being limited to only that group or groups.

    It seems to be *if* one posts as “not a support question” somehow it is locked and left uneditable and unrepliable.

    Even if one changes it to “not resolved” the Reply window does not appear.

    It is strange *why* when one tries to # Edit one is forwarded back to the forum front page.

    @nonegiven

    Excuse my ignorance and ability to voice it but …

    Where is there more detailed discussion of the philosophy and direction behind the new integrated forum design than, here, say, https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-discussions/buddypress-forum/

    Will an admin dashboard, plugin-ability re-appear or be integrated with WPMU/BP in the future?

    (I must test markup code …)

    Is it meant to be so basic, or is it a “proof of concept” kept a simple as possible to avoid as many screw ups as possible?

    I am very keen to be ‘loyal to the platform’ and am encouraged to see BBpress embedded so simply and well but, at the same time, some basic functionality would be good.

    Thanks.

    Appears to be fixed with latest 1.2.1 release. Thank you very much.

    @nonegiven

    Priority just changed from ‘critical’ to ‘minor’ … “Not a critical-priority bug.”

    There was a similar problem with the last release not recognising blogs if they had been created before BP was installed. I had to rebuild the install to get them recognised. It is not the same problem/fix, is it?

    @nonegiven

    Participant

    Ditto …

    not only do I “lose” blogs from the All Blog list, or have (1) blog showing in the navbar but NO blogs showing in the My Blogs list … but I also get random blogs show sometimes but not all.

    All blogs tab show (5) but only 3 listed.

    @nonegiven

    Just downloaded and installed 1.2 release and I get the same error message as above.

    Fatal error: Call to undefined function bp_is_front_page() in /usr/home/example/public_html/wp-content/themes/bp-default/header.php on line 47

    Nothing shows. Only the blue header and the error message.

    Try all the obvious.

    Sorry, I did not mean -core.php, I just meant ‘core development’ as in the management use of the term.

    R-A-Y, please, “Bloat” is a 150MB printer driver … a few kb of BP is not “bloat”. Good heavens, old chap, it is not 1997 any more. We have moved on a bit since 28k modems you know, otherwise WP would be written in machine code.

    What I mean is BP is now part of the Auttomatic stable, right? Could its development just not run in tandem to WPs development so that releases came out together at the same time and worked?

    If such was to happen, my vote would be for group blog to be included as a core element of the BP concept. It is a great idea and, if implemented, it is too great a loss for it to break, be lost or forgotten when Marius gets run over by a bus.

    How does that process take place?

    @nonegiven

    Participant

    Thank you for the honesty in confirming a few of the things that I discovered.

    What is the process by which elements are adopted into the core?

    And how supported is BP really at being adopted into the core of WPMU?

    It seems to me to be still left hanging outside somewhere … especially with the 2.9.1 upgrade. I mean, not that there are paid developers, should the two elements really not be released in parallel?

    @nonegiven

    Participant

    Is there any chance of the plugin being official adopted by Buddypress/Automattic, and therefore be supported?

    It is a great idea but it is not safe to use if it is not going to supported.

    Ditto, subdomains do not seem to be supported yet either.

    I find that since the upgrade, even though I can now load the page by following the above, it just does not work. Old blogs are not recognised. If I post in a group, it goes into the main admin website again.

    When I go to an old Group Blog page

    under ‘Enable group blog’

    Blog Title:

    Blog Address:

    Are blanked out with no titles.

    Under the blog menu, there is Dashboard, Add New Post, Add New Link, Add New Page … but these link to main admin site blog not group blog.

    I would not want to delete groups and have to remake them

    @nonegiven

    BP Groupblog is still broken … Did anyone have any luck making this work … I have not and the instructions are not clear to follow.

    BuddyPress Group Blog is still broken for me …

    Could you or someone else explain a bit more clearly how to fix it?

    Thank you.

    I mean where am I suppose to do this edit?

    @nonegiven

    This seems to actually be another language based problem. Any clues how to fix it or work around?

    That is to say, it does not effect roman script language but does effect character based languages, i.e. Chinese, Japanese etc.

    This may actually be a WordPress problem … again. I have encountered this in themes also.

    @nonegiven

    Thank you. I have no idea what you mean but I guess that you are confirming what I suspected …

    That Recent SiteWide Post widget posts only the entire posts.

    It would probably be good to have some option to limit it to a certain number of characters.

    Is there not a way for users to mark spammers and draw them to the admins attention as such?

    The user hakam00 in this website is a desperate spammer … how many desperate lonely geeks does “Tina” think “she” will scam on this site?

    Presumably “Tina” comes from Romania or Nigeria?

    See below:
