    I’ve integrated P2 in my custom theme. Works nicely in Firefox and Safari, but in IE the Ajax is broken again. Just throwing this out there: Has anyone else, Marius Ooms or others working on this, encountered problems in IE? Is there a difference in how IE handles javascript/ajax that I could focus on?

    Cool. Integration with Facebook and Twitter is important. I need to get that sorted out in my sites.

    What does Facestream do?

    Cool, another trick that could come in handy in other situations. Thanks again!

    OK, so this will resolve itself with new items? I can live with that.

    Thanks r-a-y!

    I meant maybe someone could take code from Buddypress and turn it into a BBpress plugin, instead of trying to force Buddypress to fit within BBpress. Half the posts on here are about BBpress these days. Buddypress is not supposed to be a forum script.

    This sounds more like you need a very basic social networking plugin for BBpress. Why not approach it from that end?

    I’d hate to see Buddypress reduced to a BBpress appendage.

    In SocialGo’s defense, there’s nothing wrong with asking money for a service/product. SocialGo and Ning are good solutions for a certain class of users. The difference is “software as a service” vs self-hosted.

    Another option is SocialEngine, which is self-hosted but not free and probably a bit more business-ready than Buddypress because of it – better member mgmt, anti-spam, photo + event plugins, etc.

    Bluehost is reliable and affordable.

    The BB forum is for the people who installed Buddypress to get into this newfangled social networking thing and then decide they need something more familiar looking.

    To my eyes the discussion beneath an item from the activity stream looks the same as the discussion in a forum.

    Group Blog with front-end posting and threaded comments via P2 will do everything you can do with a forum, but in a much more native WordPress/Buddypress way.

    I find that the greatest gaps in functionality for the new site I’m putting together is in the integrated BBpress forums

    BBpress is not part of Buddypress -> BBpress forums

    When I ask about core BP issues here, I’m often referred to the WP or WPMU forums. But questions about BBpress are apparently OK. Why? I don’t get it. Personally I don’t see what forums have to do with a social network. You don’t see Facebook and LinkedIn integrating an oldfashioned linear forum.

    So my wishlist? Remove forum integration so I don’t have to comment stuff out or have one more item in an already way too cluttered admin area.

    And things like adding (parts of) TinyMCE to textareas you can do yourself if you know some basics of theme customization and read the instructions in the TinyMCE documentation.

    Would this do what you need?

    This plugin is essential!

    Would it be possible to integrate it with the cets_blog_defaults plugin? Or even better, integrate both into the core? It’s getting hard to keep track of which setting is where in the wp-admin.

    SocialGo looks like another hosted service, like Ning.com, not a self-hosted script like Buddypress. It depends what you need; ease of use, with lots of drag-and-drop etc., or ability to customize and expand however you want.

    I’m trying to integrate the P2 theme into my custom theme. I only want all the required P2 files loaded with the home.php, the javascript in particular because it tries to ajaxify all edit links and is causing problems with some other jquery.

    I tried modifying this:

    function init() {
    if ( !is_admin() ) {
    add_action( 'wp_print_scripts', array('P2JS', 'enqueue_scripts') );
    }
    add_action('wp_head', array('P2JS', 'print_options'));
    }

    …to only load in the header.php only when the page is_home, like this:

    if (is_home() )
    {
    p2_head();
    }

    That sorta worked, but most of the other crap in P2’s js.php still gets loaded.

    I tried put if (is_home() ) around the js.php, but that didn’t work at all.

    How do I make lines like these conditional – if that’s the right term…?:

    wp_enqueue_script( 'p2js', P2_JS_URL . '/p2.js', array( 'jquery', 'utils' ), filemtime(P2_JS_PATH . '/p2.js') );

    Or is there a better way to limit all the P2 code to the home.php? I had to just merge the P2 functions.php with my theme’s functions.php, because I couldn’t figure out how to make them load with a custom p2_functions.php files.

    I’m now integrating P2 in my own messy custom theme. When logged in as one test user I can edit status updates of another. That’s not supposed to be possible!

    Also commenter links don’t work; they include a display name in the URL where they’re supposed to use the username.

    Has anyone else seen these problems? Are there issues between WP-WPMU-BP to watch out for, different handling of user ID’s etc.? Best approaches to make sure only authors of the blog can post/edit and only their own posts/comments?

    I’ll revert to original code where possible to see if I can get it to work and find out where it breaks…

    @Mike Pratt, I think you missed the point of my question. I’m looking for an event solution that is only for the Admin; an event management tool that’s more like a self-hosted EventBrite than what Facebook has, including payment bridge, confirmation emails and things like that.

    My site is for a monthly networking event, so a good event management tool is essential. I now rely mostly on Meetup.com.

    It is not clear to me if that will be part of Erwin’s plugin. I hope it will be. I posted the links to the other plugins to encourage him/them to look into how they handle these things. Perhaps they can copy some parts. If they don’t do it, I’ll probably try to do it myself when I get to it.

    Also if the plugin is end-user focused by default it may not be usable at all in my case, so I just wanted to put in a vote for my type of use case. I hope it’s possible to make it Admin-only.

    In my site I use this plugin. It has all the basic functions I need – RSVP, confirmation emails, payment bridge, etc. – but the interface is a mess. It also has no BP integration, but I don’t really need that in my project.

    I had planned to restructure, rewrite and expand the plugin, also including the excellent jQuery plugin FullCalendar. I’m very interested to see what Erwin and Marius Ooms come up with! A connection with groups, Buddypress’ killer app imho, sounds like a great idea as well.

    But for my project I really need a solid event management tool, like a self-hosted version of eventbrite.com, integrated with the BP members database. I don’t really need a solution that allows members to create events or put stuff on a calendar.

    Will Erwin and Marius solutions be an event management tool or more like an expanded community calendar? I’d encourage them to look into the EdgeTechWeb plugin…

    EDIT:

    Actually, the EdgeTechWeb plugin is really ugly. I need alternatives…

    PayPal Booking Framework

    Advanced Events Registration (based on EdgeTechWeb’s…?)

    Supposedly even the New York Times is on WordPress, although they hide it well. Not sure if they still are.

    To integrate with the Group Blog plugin we added new functionality that allows deeper blog integration inside your group which enables P2 to exist within the group. It will be very nice and we have some additional goodies coming which I don’t want to spoil yet :)

    Do you mean you have figured out how to use a P2 post-form on a group home page? Or should I continue working on that? I’m not really a programmer, but it has become an obsession…

    I assume you know the email login plugin? Do you mean you want to give the user the choice, have either work?

    I’m trying to integrate P2 in the bp-groupblog plugin. Haven’t tried BP theme template pack.

    P2 apparently only works on a regular blog index.php. On a group home (and probably other BP pages like members home etc.) it can’t find the right blog and the Ajax breaks.

    The fix probably involves setting the blogID somewhere and changing settings in P2’s js.php. If it’s possible at all…

    You have to activate it in wp-admin, under Options somewhere I think.

    I don’t see why not. This is just a matter of styling the template files for the homepage, blog indexes (index.php) and post pages (single.php) more like a newspaper site would. You’d probably want to have a Print button with each article – there are plugins for that. Several big newspapers already use WordPress.

    Our Dear Leader on the subject – scroll down beyond the ridiculously humongous header.

    Don’t like forums? Disable it!

    I already have, but half the posts on this forum these days are about BBpress/forums. Buddypress needs to make clear what it is. The growing emphasis on forums pulls it in a schizophrenic direction imho.

    BBpress forum.
