Are you using WPMU or standard WP?
If you’re using WPMU, read what I just wrote here:
https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/wordpress-vs-wordpress-mu#post-41890
Old activity items will indeed have the old “/members” URLs.
The way I see it is you have two ways around this:
1) Redirect old member URLs to their new profile root URLs in /.htaccess.
2) Modify activity contents directly from the database.
In reply to: wordpress vs wordpress muThis is my personal opinion, but If you’re building on top of an existing WordPress blog and theme, I would recommend WPMU so you can install BP on a secondary blog.
This is so you can separate the community side from your main WP blog. It will make things much easier from a theme perspective and for future upgrades to BP.
Plugins are a non-issue, unless you want to use the BP Group Wiki plugin or the BP Classifieds plugin.

If you’re starting from scratch and you do not anticipate the need for user blogs, I recommend standard WordPress.
In reply to: Accessing media redirects to 404 errorHey Peter,
Just wanted to note that you don’t need to put the /wp-content/blog.dir/1/files/ line in your group documents URL
You should be able to put /files/ and it should still work.
This doesn’t solve your issue though.

You’re right about this line:
RewriteRule ^(.*/)?files/(.*) wp-content/blogs.php?file=$2 [L]Your BP group documents are not being directed to blogs.php.
Did you check to see if any other files outside BP Group Documents work?
Try uploading something to the WP Media Library and see what happens.
In reply to: Accessing media redirects to 404 errorHey Peter,
Sounds like a RewriteRule problem.
Check your .htaccess file and see if you have a line like:
#uploaded files
RewriteRule ^(.*/)?files/$ index.php [L]In reply to: Changing BuddyPress Page TemplatesTry and override things like width via CSS first.
If you can’t do that, use a child theme and copy over the BP template files you need to override to add CSS classes and then try styling them in CSS to achieve what you want.
In reply to: create a blogIf you haven’t done a lot of work to your BP site yet, I’d recommend starting from scratch and use WPMU if you really need blogs on your site.
Make sure you make a copy of your theme (if applicable) and backup your BP tables.
In reply to: video plugin? The BP-Gallery plugin by BuddyDev.com is your best bet; it’s still in beta though.
Also, it’s a paid plugin. Cheapest membership rate is $30 for 3 months access to the entire plugin and theme gallery.

There’s also MrMaz’s BP-Links plugin – https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-links/.
And oEmbed for BuddyPress – https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/oembed-for-buddypress/
Both of these plugins rely on third-party video sites like YouTube, DailyMotion, etc.

If you’re using WPMU, login to the admin area, navigate to “Site Admin > Options” and under “Allow new registrations”, make sure “Enabled. Blogs and user accounts can be created.” is selected.
If you’ve done this, when you’re logged in, navigate to your blog directory (example.com/blogs) and click on the “Create a Blog” button.
In reply to: FAQ: How To, Code Snippets and SolutionsHelp! There’s no register button on my BuddyPress site!
If you’re using standard WP, login to the WP admin area, navigate to “Settings > General”, and make sure “Anyone can register” is checked.
If you’re using WPMU, login to the WPMU admin area, navigate to “Site Admin > Options”, and under “Allow new registrations”, select any option but “Disabled”.

In reply to: who’s online avatars widget acting funkyThis appears to be a bug. I’m experiencing the same problem on a local testbox.
The problem could be with the way the SQL query is formed.

@xevo – Avatars are not cached.
Although I did come across the following line in the bp_core_clear_user_object_cache() function in bp-core.php, which attempts to delete the online user cache:
wp_cache_delete( 'online_users' );However, I don’t see where the cache for “online_users” is ever set.
I’m guessing this is a remnant from the old BP 1.0 codebase.

Can anyone else duplicate what billydecola, enrige and myself are experiencing?
[EDIT]
Ticket created – https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/2162
In reply to: Buddypress iPhone theme updateI like how everything else is dimmed out!
Your theory is correct.
Sorry for sounding like a broken record, but do any errors show up in your server log?
Just tried this, I don’t get a white screen.
What errors do you get in your server log?
What errors do you get?
You have to retain the directory structure when copying things over to your child theme.
In reply to: BP1.2+ Plugin WishlistsHey gang,
Just moderated my first thread; removed some sentences due to topic irrelevancy, but the main gist is still there.
Going back to stwc’s initial post:
– forum inline attachments – Boone has a port of _ck_’s old plugin working for the most part
– quote – i’ll take a look at this one when i have some time
– forum whispers – not really interested in this one… maybe someone else can take a look at this?
– gui for textarea – Boone has a TinyMCE plugin for this
Peter, as you well know, you can disable forum integration. Privacy is an issue, yes. There’s no complete solution right now (patiently waiting for Jeff’s plugin), but one solution I’ve tried is Jehy’s Registered Users Only 2 plugin. Though, I did modify it a tiny bit for BP needs. I can post the modified code if anyone’s interested.
In reply to: image sizeWhen you crop your avatar, the image gets reduced to the width and height dimensions.
So yes, the filesize gets reduced.
In reply to: phpBB integrationYou’re looking for a WordPress <-> phpBB bridge.
Have you tried WP-United?
In reply to: How to grab xprofile data?Yes you can skip the while loop!
Read this to grab the data of a xprofile field:
https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/editing-the-core-elements-of-buddy-press#post-41651
You have two ways to add the xprofile field:
1) Hook into the profile action to display custom data (preferred)
In your child theme’s functions.php, add the following:
function my_bp_xprofile_about_me() {
bp_profile_field_data('field=About Me');
}
add_action('bp_before_member_header_meta','my_bp_xprofile_about_me');This method is preferred because you won’t have to worry about theme updates.
2) Copy /bp-themes/bp-default/members/single/member-header.php to a child theme and make your changes there
Manually add the bp_profile_field_data(‘field=About Me’) line to the file.
In reply to: Search Plugin or Code RequiredIt sounds like this plugin will help you:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-geo/
Haven’t tested it though.
In reply to: phpBB integrationBuddyPress utilizes bbPress only for the groups component.
This doesn’t limit you from using using phpBB or vBulletin!
There are a few scripts out there that can integrate phpBB and vBulletin into WordPress.
I’d suggest checking those out.
In reply to: How to grab xprofile data?Boone is right; however there is a way to post specific xprofile fields!
Check out a nifty function called bp_profile_field_data().
Say I have an xprofile field called “Bio”.
I’d use this code snippet:
bp_profile_field_data('field=Bio');This will echo the “Bio” xprofile field of the displayed user.
If you want to manipulate the data, use:
bp_get_profile_field_data('field=Bio');
