In reply to: I\’ve killed my community!
You didn’t kill anything

This happened to me on upgrade.
You’re most likely using a deprecated theme.
I’m not in front of my workstation right now, but go into your WP theme’s functions.php, find a line that says something like:
require_once(bp-core/bp-core-activation.php)There’s probably two of these lines… if you see any require_once’s with something referencing BP, comment those out and check your BP community again.
Hope that helps!
Hey jimmiejo,
Use TheEasyButton’s most recent tutorial:
http://theeasybutton.com/blog/2009/07/17/integrating-buddypress-wordpress-mu-and-bbpress/
This worked for me.
In reply to: Buddypress Developer Wanted – Paid Job!Ahh gotcha… wasn’t thinking of modding the Supporter plugin

Long day!
In reply to: Buddypress Developer Wanted – Paid Job!Doesn’t the Supporter plugin only support one level of membership?
I might be wrong…
It’s the multiple level permissioning that’s the big obstacle with this project.
In reply to: Buddypress Developer Wanted – Paid Job!Hey jj_75,
Thanks for posting, however job offers should be posted on the BP Job Board Group:
In reply to: Adding external blogs no longer on roadmap?There’s Andy’s External Blogs plugin for Groups:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/external-group-blogs/
You need to create a group first in order to take advantage of this.
If you’re looking for external blogs for your personal activity stream, there isn’t one… yet.
thorosii, it’s possible to salvage your deprecated theme (I’ve done it).
But it requires a number of core, unsupported patches and it’s not recommended.
Andy has mentioned that BP is not going to support deprecated themes moving forward.
It would be best to do what Jeff has stated to save yourself the time.
If you really need to know the how to salvage your theme (again I state this is not recommended), let me know and I’ll do a writeup.
In reply to: buddybar menu add-onsAdd an else statement to the code Boone posted.
<?php if(is_user_logged_in()) : ?>
<a href="LINK TO WHERE YOU WANT THE LOGGED IN USER TO GO"><img src="YOUR BUTTON" alt="" /></a>
<?php else : ?>
<a href="LINK TO WHERE YOU WANT PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT LOGGED IN TO GO"><img src="YOUR BUTTON" alt="" /></a>
<?php endif; ?>Sorry for the caps!
In reply to: User Online IconOkay, here’s my crack at finding out if a displayed user ID is online:
function is_displayed_user_online() {
global $bp;
$user = new BP_Core_User();
$fetchOnlineUsers = array_values($user->get_online_users());
// grab online user IDs
$onlineIDs = $fetchOnlineUsers[0];
// loop through each online user ID; if online user ID matches displayed user ID, then displayed user is online, hence return true
foreach($onlineIDs as $online) {
if($bp->displayed_user->id == $online->user_id) {
return true;
}
}
}
//let's test out the function
//put this in a profile template
if(is_displayed_user_online())
echo 'user is online';
else
echo 'user is offline';In reply to: Adding a URL to Profile Field SetupI use a plugin by Boone Gorges called Custom Profile Filters:
Needs some manual configuration in the $social_networking_fields array, but you should be able to do what you need.
Give that a shot.
In reply to: User Online IconI know your code offers the “dot” portion of his request, DJPaul.
Here’s the online status portion:
EDIT: Deleted function… needs more testing with other accounts that are not administrators!
In reply to: Problem with activationprofitsbuzz, are you using the deprecated theme format?
In reply to: Button to userprofile pageHere you go:
<?php if(is_user_logged_in()) : ?>
<a href="<?php echo bp_get_loggedin_user_link(); ?>"><img src="LINK TO YOUR BUTTON" alt="My Profile" /></a>
<?php endif; ?>In reply to: User Online IconHey DJPaul,
I think jamesyeah is talking about a general online status icon for BP and not for the buddypress.org/forums/.
@jamesyeah, check out the /bp-core/bp-core-classes.php file.
This will give you a headstart:
global $bp;
$user = new BP_Core_User( $bp->displayed_user->id); //i'm assuming you're viewing someone's profile page here
$user_status = $user->status;I’ll take a look at this later tonight, but we’ll see if a solution is posted by then
Hi Kunal,
I’m using both on my test environment right now (still undecided if I want to go with embedded bbPress or external!).
You should be able to use BP’s internal bbPress forums by going straight to the BP forums slug.
By default, this is:
http://YOURBPINSTALL.com/forums/
If your external bbPress install is the same as this slug, you’ll need to modify your BP forums slug to something else.
You can do this by adding this line in your wp-config.php:
define( 'BP_FORUMS_SLUG', 'somedifferentslug' );In reply to: Non buddypress plugins on plugin directory.That’s great news, Andy!
That’s right, Vividbreeze.
In reply to: Adding the admin bar to a php file.So you’re saying you want to use the BuddyBar outside of WordPress?
If so, this article helped me:
http://dev.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2009/10/12/displaying-the-buddypress-admin-bar-in-other-applications/
I used this on a Moodle install and it worked.

Is your homepage powered by WordPress? If so, the answer will be much easier.
Let us know what your setup is.
Well if I use the bbopress in buddypress for new installation, HOW do I add forum sections?
You can’t add forum sections.
BuddyPress forums are tied to groups. So you’ll have to create new groups with forums in order to emulate forum sections.
If you’re trying to setup BuddyPress forums to be like this:
Remove bbPress and reinstall BuddyPress. This time, follow these instructions:
https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/setting-up-a-new-installation/
Specifically the “Setting Up Forums” section.
—
If you plan on using a separate install of bbPress, you’ll need to theme it.
No way around this I’m afraid.
You could use Manoj Kumar’s BuddyPress theme for bbPress to get a similar looking BP feel:
http://manojkumar.org/buddypress-theme-for-bbpress/
Hope that helps!
Hey Vividbreeze,
What are you trying to do?
I’m guessing you want to use BuddyPress’ embedded bbPress forums like this:
If so, go into your WPMU admin area, and under “BuddyPress > Forums setup” and select ““Set up a new bbPress installation”.
If you’re trying to integrate a separate bbPress install, reply back and let us know.
In reply to: Search-Engine-Optimization plug-in ?The reason the plugin was built (I’m not the creator) was because in BP you can’t change the default [title] tags or add meta data to BP pages.
I think a BP SEO module should be a plugin, it shouldn’t be in the core.
Remember, content is king! SEO helps to some extent, but there’s no real point for SEO in social networks!
In reply to: Search-Engine-Optimization plug-in ?In reply to: Non buddypress plugins on plugin directory.Just tried out Mingle and I’m very impressed with it, especially at the fact that it’s such a young plugin.
Mingle’s activity stream and commenting is the way BuddyPress should have done it.
I’ve never understood why status updates and the wire are considered separate.
Mingle also has basic out-of-the-box privacy features so you can choose if your profile is visible to your friends only or to the public.
The author of the plugin is Blair Williams, who has also made the excellent Pretty Link plugin.
No sitewide activity stream, pretty permalink support for user profiles, private messages support, or groups, but that’s understandable.
So far I like Mingle because it’s simple and I hope it stays that way.
It’s not enough to jump ship from BP, but it’s definitely a plugin to keep an eye on.
I dug through the folder structures to find that the old Plugins folder in wp-content was /plugins/ while the 2.8.6 folder is /mu-plugins/
The plugins folder should always be /plugins/.
/mu-plugins/ are for plugins you want to run sitewide; these plugins are automatically activated; you generally never put regular WP plugins in there!
I suggest starting your install over:
https://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WPMU
If you’re upgrading, restore your backup DB and your previous MU files and read this:
In reply to: Template questionBy default, the BP packaged theme is a child theme that uses the “bp-sn-parent” theme for the homepage, but you can always override it by copy and pasting home.php over to your child theme.
In this case, you would copy home.php from “bp-sn-parent” over to “bp-default” to override it.
—
If you’re starting from scratch, I would make a copy of the “bp-default” directory, rename the folder and start experimenting.
More info here:

Hope I didn’t confuse you!
