I’ve also been working on integrating a WYSIWYG editor for BP as well (but with image upload functionality).
Have tried nicEdit and DSRTE, but I’ve run into various issues with both, which is why I haven’t released it.
In reply to: User / messaging exploit? Causing spamSounds like someone exploited a WordPress vulnerability on your site.
Are you using the latest version of WPMU / BuddyPress?
If so, did you upgrade?

In reply to: Fighting SplogsThat’s the exact approach I took (although I removed the admin screen because I don’t really care for it). It works wonders.
+1 for randomising the names and values. I’m going to take that bit of code!
In reply to: BP Achievements on an already running communityYup, no problem about the next version. Definitely not urgent!
Just wanted to let you know what I thought on initial activation.
In reply to: Need help with homepage Widgets for logged-in usersLike I said, you’d need to create an xprofile field called “Zip Code”.
And then you’ll need to manually call the weather widget using the manual WP widget function call (i forget what this is at the moment) and pass the logged-in user’s “Zip Code” (provided they have filled it in). You can definitely pass arguments / settings to widgets manually.

I’d imagine you would create an xprofile field named “Zip Code”, otherwise how else are you going to grab the logged-in user’s zip code?
In reply to: Need help with homepage Widgets for logged-in usersYou’d have to manually call the widget in question and call the ZIP code from the xprofile field of the logged-in user.
You wouldn’t be able to set this from the WP backend.
In reply to: Easy Way to Make Friends with Everyone?You’re right about reason #1.
Re: reason #2, it shouldn’t make friend requests, it should automatically sign you up as a friend. At least that’s the case on the older version of Welcome Pack working with BP 1.0.3.
We use this feature much like the way Tom from MySpace is friends with everyone. Try the latest version of Welcome Pack for BP 1.1+.
In reply to: How to change built in BuddyPress verbiageYou have to add a define line in your bp-custom.php.
Say you have your languages files called piglatin.mo and piglatin.po.
Upload the files to /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-languages/.
Then this is what you’d put in your /wp-content/plugins/bp-custom.php:
define( 'BPLANG', 'piglatin' );
if ( file_exists( BP_PLUGIN_DIR . '/bp-languages/' . BPLANG . '.mo' ) ) {
load_textdomain( 'buddypress', BP_PLUGIN_DIR . '/bp-languages/' . BPLANG . '.mo' );
}In reply to: Easy Way to Make Friends with Everyone?Why not use DJPaul’s Welcome Pack and select everybody as friends?
In reply to: New BuddyPress 1.2 default themeLove the new theme!
Can’t wait to play around with this.
I love the fact that activities drive everything, however less emphasis is placed on the profile (unlike before).
What I would like to do is put friends and groups so they are on the same page.
The “Blogs” tab shouldn’t show up if the user doesn’t have any blogs associated with their account.

Looks like the new activity permalinks are following the minimalistic layout of Twitter.
Cool!
Won’t be long before someone either makes a plugin or creates an xprofile field for users to change the background of it

Can’t wait!
In reply to: Upgrading to 1.1.3 break template changes?It depends how much you have altered.
However, if you’re creating your own child theme off of the bp-sn-parent theme, make sure you have a footer.php (or sidebar.php or whatever) in your child theme folder.
Your footer (and other files) will stay intact on upgrades.
In reply to: WordPressFYI, here’s the demo of BP on standard WP:
Plugin isn’t released yet AFAIK.
At least this allows standard WP folks to test out BP before the merge, I can see this greatly helping development timelines for those looking at standard WP for social networking.
For updates, follow the developer’s Twitter account:
In reply to: Completely Integrating a Previous bbPress InstallGood question, Sclough.
I’m wondering about this myself as I upgraded from the old, separate install of bbPress as well.
Your steps sound about right. Can a mod or someone else confirm?
In reply to: Activities vs. Forums ?Erich, I replied to your ticket on Trac about this, but thought I’d post my response here as well.
In practice, Forums are for focused discussion. Forum posts are not threaded and you must visit the actual forum post to reply.
Activity updates are freeform and have no real structure, but are threaded and can be replied to without having to visit the actual activity permalink.
However, I’m guessing (like you) that most people will reply to activity comments, instead of the forum topic.
The creation of activity comments have made the forums component somewhat less relevant now.
This is kind of related to a ticket I opened about the usability factor of having too many ways to communicate:

That should be just enough time for everything to blow up.
Nicely put!

Looking forward to the beta as well.

In reply to: Why is BuddyPress stripping my object or embed tags?Thanks for re-bumping this (even though this is more of a MU issue).
I actually just encountered Peter’s original problem during an export/import.
In reply to: Anyone else working on integrating Gigya?From what I remember, BP Contents doesn’t allow you to setup member categories…
In reply to: adding adminbar to bbpress*(official one)If it’s just the CSS you’re worried about, why not just call the CSS file directly into the bbPress theme and see what happens?
In reply to: adminbar & footer dissapearedCheck to see if you have a call to get_footer() in your templates.
In reply to: adding adminbar to bbpress*(official one)Try JJJ’s BuddyBar in bbPress plugin:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddybar-in-bbpress/
Or the manual method:

If all else fails:

In reply to: Do you exist this plug in?You could do this by editing the profile template and adding a friends check conditional…
Something like this:
<?php
global $bp;
if (is_user_logged_in() && friends_check_friendship($bp->loggedin_user->id,$bp->displayed_user->id) ) : ?>
SHOW PROFILE CODE IS HERE
<?php else : ?>
<p>You need to be friends with this member in order to view their profile</p>
<?php endif; ?>Upgrade to the latest version of WPMU and this will be fixed.
If you don’t want to upgrade immediately, you can edit one file to fix it:
In reply to: New ways to help each other (discussion)I think the general guidelines in the WP thread are good guidelines the BP community could adopt.
Of course, WP has a ton more developers/supporters, but we could start small!
In reply to: Activity CommentingI like the new activity commenting; this is light years better than what we currently have.
I know you’re still working on this, Andy, but forum topics and activity threads are duplicated.
Forum topics / responses should not have activity commenting enabled. If a comment is made, perhaps add it as a forum reply instead?
Great work! I can’t wait for this to be released.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that blog activity comments should be actual blog comments as well… probably a little tricky here. A possible workaround could be to add a “Community Reactions” block to the blog post in question where activity comments would be listed? Kind of like a trackback or something?
