In reply to: HTML newbie – q editing /activity/index.php
@sophiew – you can use backticks around your code to make it show up in the thread.
It’s probably not a good idea to try and rework your theme if you are newbie to HTML. They can be reasonably complicated, and also require some PHP knowledge if you are making substantial mods.
Learning on the job is a decent approach, but an HTML primer first might be a good idea. If you want to get started straightaway, I’d suggest switching to the BuddyPress default theme and working from there.. A child theme from the default will be a lot less code changing for you.
In reply to: Activity & Forum@tubruk – this is known issue – take a look at this thread (it covers blog comments and forum responses in the activity stream): https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/replying-to-blog-post-in-the-activity-stream-as-post-comments-rather-than-just-activity-stream-replies/
and for a simple solution from @nuprn1: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/clarification-needed-on-posting-forum-replies/
In reply to: aggregate activity stream from public groups@psycolor: public group activities (e.g. joining a group, creating a group, posting updates) should appear in the standard activity stream. Which activities are not showing for you?
To hide private group activity from the activity stream – follow the instructions I gave for excluding blogs in this thread: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/need-exclude-parameter-for-bp_has_activities/
Check whether the activity item action is group related, then use the primary id of the item to get the group_id, and then check whether it is one of your private groups.
As per my comment on blogs, you can do this for all activity loops by using the filter, or on a loop by loop basis.
In reply to: need exclude parameter for bp_has_activities()@psycolor: the existing documentation on customising the activity loop can be found here: https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/custom-buddypress-loops/the-activity-stream-loop/
In reply to: Show comments on the activity related to that blog?@javipas – you need to be a little clearer on your setup. In the default setup / theme, the activity stream is a separate page, and not something that shows up on individual blogs / blog pages.
Are you using a custom theme with a custom activity stream, or an activity stream widget in your blogs?
The standard activity stream loop shows activity across your entire BuddyPress installation. If you want to filter the activity steam to just show comments relating to a specific blog, you can write your own custom activity loop:
Take a look at this documentation, in particular filtering on the primary_id to just show posts for a specific blog id: https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/custom-buddypress-loops/the-activity-stream-loop/
In reply to: Every day, seven thousand new members!@onlyblue – I suspect a good sweep to remove all the spam accounts will get it down to a sensible and useful members directory
It’ll need a good automated tool!
In reply to: need exclude parameter for bp_has_activities()@anointed – yes, it looks like you can specify blog_ids to specifically include, but not to exclude, in a call to bp_has_activities()
My suggested workarounds:
If you want to exclude the blogs on all calls to bp_has_activities() – Hook a function onto the bp_has_activities filter. That function should process the activities_template (passed as a parameter) removing the entries where the primary_id is in your blog ids to exclude.
If you want to exclude the blogs on one specific call to bp_has_activities() – Check the primary_id of the activity item at the start of your loop, and skip processing if it’s in your list of blog ids to exclude. It’s not the most efficient, and might be a pain if you are counting returned results, but should work.
Cheers, Roger
In reply to: Customizing the Blog Loopyou can write your own custom blog loop, see: https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/custom-buddypress-loops/the-blogs-loop/
and make use of some of the functions in bp-blogs-templatetags.php to check for blog name, etc. and exclude as appropriate.
In reply to: Changing target of ‘register’ link on login page@footybible – have a look for a block with p id=”nav” . Replace the line in that block with the link to register
In reply to: Changing target of ‘register’ link on login page@footybible – you can try replacing line 368 in wp-login.php with the code I put in the pastebin (above).
However, I don’t know if this catches everything (give it a quick try!). There’s a lot of code / javascript going on in there, so fingers need to be crossed that this simple fix will do the trick.
@govpatel – you are using the wrong @mention for Matt – you need to use the username rather than the displayed name. I know, it’s really un-user friendly!
In reply to: Links in Members Directory not working.Hej Ikey,
as you have heavily customised this area of the site – redirecting to login if not a member in the members directory – I suspect the problem is in your customisation / redirect logic, and not a BuddyPress bug.
You’d need to post a lot more information for someone to assist on this – all of your re-direct logic / function would be a start (use pastebin.com and include a link in your thread).
Then, keep your fingers crossed that someone wants dive in to heavily customised code and look around to help

Cheers,
RogerIn reply to: Problem with Title Tag in Category and TagYes, sorry – I only checked a multi-word post title.
You are correct, categories and tag page titles are behaving differently in default BuddyPress vs. default WordPress install
The function that builds the title in BuddyPress is bp_page_title(). In WordPress it’s wp_title()
The WP function is doing a lot more work with the category and tag slug, taking the name slug it’s been passed (with the hyphens inserted) and looking up the correct (non-hyphenated) title to insert.
OK, two things I suggest:
1. Report this, and suggest that the bp_page_title() function should behave the same as wp_title() for categories, tags, etc. This would be the sensible way for the function to behave IMO. @hnla – is adding this to the trac, the correct way to raise this a possible fix?
2. For a quick fix, code your own title function, and replace the call to bp_page_title() in your header.php with a call to your own function
The function may look a little daunting, but should be reasonably straightforward with a bit of judicious copying and pasting from the existing BP and WP functions.
Cheers, Roger
In reply to: adding links to header navigationYou’ll need to create your own theme and modify the header.php file.
Theme design needs PHP, HTML and CSS skills. If you’ve got those, you are flying!
Check in support.. Documentation for the article on child themes.
If you are not competent building your own theme and editing the php file, you might be able to find an off the shelf theme that automatically includes categories in the nav menu
In reply to: Problem with Title Tag in Category and Tag@mikey3D – there is something wrong in your set up. The default installation/theme shows the title tag with spaces between the words.
Are you using the default theme unmodified? Have you got any additional plugins running?
Switch to default theme, disable all plugins and let us know if the title tags now have spaces
This is a simple thing to achieve with just a little custom theming. It’s also highly theme specific (if, where, when, how big, etc, you want adverts), and not something I’d expect in a default setup.
If you want a simple plugin solution, there are lots of off the shelf basic plugins in WordPress that should work without problem in BuddyPress (ad-rotator plugins). Use a theme with dynamic sidebars, install the plugins and add the widgets.
If advertising is really crucial to the business, then you are better to work with a full powered ad management system, e.g. OpenX or Google Adserver. Again, these are straightforward to include in a BuddyPress site: create dynamic sidebars in your theme for each of the advertising zones you require, then insert widgets with the ad zone codes from your management system. These ad management systems provide all the options you requested, and a whole lot more.
@guigoz – this thread has some suggestions: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/mentions-is-confusing-to-members/
In reply to: @mentions is confusing to members@pgayed: please see this thread which gives the solution: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/customizing-buddypress-profile-page-default-tab-and-item-nav-order
In reply to: Forums Page not Working Properly@jabberjazz – not an answer to your current problem, but if you are just starting a project with forums, I’d consider waiting a few weeks for the new approach to forums: https://buddypress.org/2010/08/buddypress-and-bbpress-the-future/
@davidniyat – you can’t just cut and paste sections from the default theme if they rely on functions that are defined elsewhere in the theme. It’s designed to be use a parent theme.
The bp_dtheme functionality is embedded / used in various places in the theme. In particular, you need to take a look at the functions.php file where those functions are defined.
In reply to: BuddyPress Stopped working1. Does it work with the default BuddyPress theme bp-default?
2. Are your permalinks working – try changing them to a custom setting such as /%category%/%postname%/ – do you receive any error messages about .htaccess?
In reply to: Members identificationYou could try this function: bp_is_profile_component()
These type of functions are in bp-core-templatetags.php
In reply to: Wrong title, no name in header, search bear?@computerjoe – whilst it pains me to do anything to assist those destroyers of the country and democracy
, here’s a link to the fix for the page title problem:https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/page-title-in-bp/
In reply to: Posts can’t be foundWhich theme are you using?
Do the posts appear correctly with BP deactivated?
In reply to: Blogs on my BPsite@boniu –
Have you set your WP up for multisite, and tested custom permalinks (e.g. /%category%/%postname%/) ? If they are functioning ok, then your .htaccess / mod_rewrite is probably fine.
Also, can you create secondary blogs without problem?
Now try using the automatic install for BuddyPress, and let us know how that goes
