In reply to: BuddyPress Conditional Profile Fields available now?
This is far from ‘BASIC’, and also impractical from an interface perspective – for your specific requirement: 50 States each having say 50 cities, equates to 50 x 50 = 2,500 drop down controls you’d have to configure just on your 3rd layer.
It also doesn’t take into account handling this in a generic way, and other fields (apart from drop downs) that might equally well want conditional behaviour attached to them (checkboxes, value entered in number field, etc.).
Specialist form generation software might want to try and tackle this, but it’s not suitable for the base set of profile field functions offered by BuddyPress.

The best way to implement this for your Countries, States, Cities, etc. is to add the fields programmatically — if you search on Github, you’ll find a number of PHP arrays that have already been produced / maintained listing states and their corresponding cities.
You can iterate over these arrays in your code (a plugin, or functions.php, etc) and generate the fields programmatically using the xprofile functions provided in the BuddyPress API.
that should be a fairly simple plugin to write.. adding a suspended user role, and redirecting suspended user sign in / page access to preventing them contributing on the site.
If you don’t find an existing solution – you can advertise on the jobs board group on this site for a developer – it should only take an hour or so to build this capability.
In reply to: WooCommerce and buddypressYes, WooCommerce works fine alongside BuddyPress. We use it on http://www.enterprisenation.com/shop
WooCommerce provides a fairly rich API with lots of actions you can hook onto — so, provided you are a developer, you can also mould a tight integration with BuddyPress.
Themekraft produce a plugin that integrates the WooCommerce account / profile screens with BuddyPress’s profile screen — we find there are some issues with the UX this creates though. If you google this forum, there was a recent thread discussing this.
In reply to: Default NAV Menu… also confirm whether it works with bp-default theme activated
In reply to: LInk to inbox / sent messagesI think if you change something in your profile, it will update your name… don’t hold me to that though.
There’s a lot of stuff on this site that needs improving.
In reply to: LInk to inbox / sent messagesYou can build your links using this sort of structure:
$link = bp_loggedin_user_domain() . bp_get_messages_slug() . ‘/inbox’;
In reply to: Profile fieldsIf you are a PHP developer, you can rework the profile fields (in edit.php ) to use the wp_editor() function.
You’ll also need to take a look at the filters that strip tags from profile fields and set appropriately to your needs.
The question was asked recently on this forum — so, have a Google.
In reply to: BP Photos+tags not working@erikahrend – we have an album plugin that supports full member tagging of photos – we should have an announcement shortly regarding its release — watch this space!
Yes, you can do this with filters — If you have a Google on this site, I’m fairly sure there’s threads covering how to do it
activity permalinks are fixed when the activity is created – so, yes, if you change host they will no longer work.
There is a trac ticket (I think) to change this behaviour – you may want to mention on there about the issue changing host (I think the ticket just refers to permalink type changes).
In reply to: changing URL’sGive some more information — Which theme are you using? What url does it give in the email? Which url are you being redirected to (and what does the title bar say)?
In reply to: Filtering by user field not workingIt is possible to filter profiles, but you’ll need PHP development skills — It’s not possible directly with ‘out of the box’ BuddyPress
In reply to: Filtering by user field not working@rcpessoa – that’s not how those links work – they are not a filtering mechanism.
Instead they do a search across the member profiles for any text that has that value.
It gets applied somewhat non-sensically to any profile data, and is a confusing UX element that can be turned off – have a google for how to do that.
In reply to: Questions and Help with codingYou should ask these as separate questions – the first two issues are general WordPress (not BuddyPress), so best asked on the wordpress.org forums.
Post issue 3 as sep question on here, and issue 4 you could ask to @pollyplummer on her group for the plugin
which is the standard loop / function for doing it — we all ‘cut & paste’ that one from the same place (although, in our case, we default set thumb to ‘false’, and explicitly call it with true where appropriate).
Yes, you are doing the wp_insert_post(), which I guess fires off the new post hook, before you add the attachments, so they are not set yet.
Not sure, how wp-admin gets around that.
You could try editing /profile/edit.php in your theme to use wp_editor() instead of textareas.
Have a Google for guidance on using wp_editor() – it’s the WordPress wrapper around tinymce.
You’ll probably also need to change the filters that sanitise your text inputs to ensure they allow the tags that you want to support in your editors.
Yes, functions.php (or bp-custom.php)
Neither is safer / better – they do different things. One customises the content, the other just processes the cpt the same way a normal blog post would be processed. It depends what you want yours to do, as to which filter to use.
In reply to: Safari and Chrome messed up bbpress layoutThe problem is in your ‘table-layout: fixed’ selector.
Remove that and it sizes correctly. If you didn’t add that selector, and it’s part of the bbpress.css files for the twenty ten theme, then I’d suggest bbPress haven’t tested very thoroughly, and you should report it there as a bug
Can’t see why it would be a timing issue if it works fine with a hardcoded ID.
What’s in your $post structure at that point? Have you definitely set a thumbnail for the post in question?
@shanebp — from what you said in your OP, get_the_post_thumbnail() is working correctly (if you provide a hardcoded post_id) — so that function would appear not to be the problem.
What output are you getting from get_the_post_thumbnail? I’d be var_dumping $post just before the call, and also $activity_content just after to narrow it down.
@4ella — Shane has already given the code for doing that in his original post. If you don’t want any custom content, but simply want to add your custom post type to the standard types processed, you can simply add a filter to bp_blogs_record_post_post_types to include your cpt – something like:
`
add_filter( ‘bp_blogs_record_post_post_types’, ‘inspired_record_more_types’ );
function inspired_record_more_types( $types ) {
$types[] = ‘my-cpt-name’;return $types;
}
`In reply to: My host keeps shutting down my accountA large proportion of ‘moulded’ sites are built with very few ‘off the shelf’ plugins. They custom build the features / functions they want on trusted APIs, rather than simply combining a set of generic plugins over which they have little quality control.
Perhaps you should be analysing why your email plugin requires so much ‘processor’ to just send a max of 50 emails.
Also, put a watch on your pages to see how many database calls are being made – that should help you determine which widgets, plugins, loops you’ll need to optimise.
In reply to: How do I make custom profile urls?You may find it easier to amend the registration process / form — combining First Name + Last Name when the user registers and using that for the username.
@juanmaguerrero — the activity-loop is part of the theme, and even if possible, it wouldn’t be appropriate for a plugin to replace it en-masse.
Different themes may implement different activity-loops (different markup, etc.) — so, your code (as a plugin) couldn’t possibly replace successfully in all possible cases.
If it’s not possible to implement your plugin hooking onto pre-existing actions, then perhaps it’s not appropriate as a plugin, and better released as a code snippet, or as part of a new theme.
In reply to: My host keeps shutting down my accountHopefully the changes to optimise database calls (in 1.7??) will make a significant difference to the hosting requirements for even a small BP site.
We’ve not found MT to be the most efficient in terms of memory and processor, perhaps because of the additional load imposed by Plesk for the control panel. For our VPS hosting, we’ve switched a number of our sites to Rocket — better efficiency and cheaper, but self managed, so requiring extra work / knowledge.In reply to: BP Profile Privacy…@modemlooper — the fix would be to get rid of most of those classes that BP adds, not create more!
