In reply to: Convert Groups into Custom Taxonomies
Thanks @djpaul
In reply to: Move support to wordpress.orgSupport is merged, yay!
So now, BuddyPress support is at https://buddypress.org/support and support for BuddyPress plugins is at https://wordpress.org/support
In reply to: Convert Groups into Custom TaxonomiesFair point. I will try to flesh out the whys and wherefores.
As for contributing code, that’s my Achilles’ heel. If I was able to code, as opposed to being just an end-user, I would have put in a fair bit of work (e.g. I do at OpenCart http://www.opencart.com/index.php?route=extension/extension&filter_username=OC2PS as due to their vQmod system http://code.google.com/p/vqmod/ I can patch things up to my liking without a great deal of PHP or even programming knowledge)
I haven’t seen a post by @johnjamesjacoby on this yet. At the very least I haven’t seen any tags that say CPT, custom post types, or custom taxonomies.
In reply to: Buddypress plugin for uploading videosI would go with BuddyPress Media plugin, as opposed to “BuddyPress Media” forked product. Not a big fan of forks, and the plugin is being actively developed and supported.
In reply to: Unable to join groups at bp.orgThere is a ticket https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/4509
In reply to: Disable group avatarsBy delete the markup, I assume you mean delete it from the template files. Or, less efficiently, I could use CSS to not display the avatar.
But when I say disable group avatars, I am also thinking about cutting off the group creation step where people can upload avatars, and remove avatar tab from group edit screen…
In reply to: Unable to join groups at bp.orgI mean this website, i.e. buddypress.org
I am unable to join any groups here.
(not related to the other post)
Sounds very promising.
Pity it seems to be dead https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-members-avatar-map/
Even developer’s website seems dead http://web-world.co.il/
@hnla Could you possibly consider taking over this plugin and updating it for BP 1.6.1?
In reply to: Upload profile image at activation – in 1.7Trac can have a relatively narrow discussion. Forums have a larger audience and greater participation.
Besides I can;t log into trac for some reason.
Yup, would be good if BP developers pick one of these and merge it into the core.
Photos can’t be an afterthought. Media is a part of even the WP core.
In reply to: Upload profile image at activation – in 1.7@mercime Spot on! This is clear from
https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/2741
https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/4128However, as discussed at https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/4132 there are good, safe ways of doing this.
In reply to: Need for hierarchical groupsCommunity = Social network
BuddyPress is a social networking script. The tagline of BuddyPress is “Social networking in a box”.
`If hierarchy is going to be pursued within one community, might as well tackle “across” multiple communities.`
Doesn’t make any sense. It’s akin to saying that if WordPress allows hierarchical pages on one site, might as well find a way to be able to add pages to CNN or ESPN.In reply to: Need for hierarchical groups@qrahaman Right! So you are talking about stuff happening at other sites…like Disqus manages comments on many sites or Gravatar serves profile pictures to many sites.
This is not a social network feature. I don’t know any social network that does this.
It is an entirely different product. Furthermore, a hosted product, not a script.
Also, this is completely unrelated to this thread. If you’d like to discuss the concept further, please start a new topic.
In reply to: Need for hierarchical groups`Is that already possible?`
@qrahaman Yes.Are you familiar with Facebook wall? You don’t go to Coca-Cola page or your friend George’s profile to get updates from them….you get everything on your wall.
This is already possible in BuddyPress. Try the link I posted the previous message to see Paul’s wall.
In reply to: Need for hierarchical groups@qrahaman I still don’t understand what you mean by join `Curling group from within D&D`
I mean of course, Paul can join Curling Group. Irrespective of where he spends his day, his wall https://buddypress.org/community/members/djpaul/activity/groups/ shows updates from all his groups, same as facebook.
In reply to: Need for hierarchical groups@qrahaman Actually, on the ticket the developers have indicated that technical implementation is rather simple. The issue is making a decision on whether this is something they want to do.
`Consider this: what if a member could join a or subscribe to a group that’s in a different BuddyPress community where the activity for that group comes into his/her personal activity stream?`
Not quite sure what you mean.In reply to: Upload profile image at activation – in 1.7@modemlooper I didn’t say this should be required. I said this should be available,. Both Facebook and Twitter have this available.
In reply to: Need for hierarchical groups@djpaul
It’s a usability thing. Let me take an example:Site for networking of dentists in the UK.
What I have in mind is at top level 4 groups:
– England
– Wales
– Scotland
– IrelandThen within each group, there are subgroups for counties.
Within each county subgroup, there are sub-subgroups for town/city etc.
Within the county sub-subgroup for town/city for particularly large cities, there could be sub-sub-subgroups for boroughs.
If Paul joins the group for Exeter, he should automatically become a member of Devon and England respectively.
I’m sure there are other ways of doing this; I just don’t see anything so instinctive or natural.
There can be multiple other examples.
For a medical professionals organization:
Doctor > Neurology > Clinical neurophysiology
For a university:
Business School > MBA > Managerial Accounting
etcI don’t suppose a ton of people currently use hierarchical groups in BuddyPress. But I am certain that features like this will go a long way in opening up new markets for the script, way beyond just small techie groups.
In reply to: Upload profile image at activation – in 1.7Profile photo is pretty standard on everything though – from social networking sites to other kinds of sites…
In reply to: Quick Admin@djpaul Still unable to log into Trac https://buddypress.org/community/groups/miscellaneous/forum/topic/login-trouble-in-bp-trac/
In reply to: Need for hierarchical groups@boonebgorges @djpaul In that case, any other ideas or plans for hierarchical groups, the way there are hierarchical pages in WordPress?
In reply to: [SOLVED] Login trouble in BP TracYup.
In reply to: Need for hierarchical groups@boonebgorges Any plans to write a proof of concept for taking messages and groups to CPT, now that 1.6 has been out in the wild for a while and is fairly stable?
In reply to: Need for hierarchical groupsAny updates on the current thinking on this issue?
Just to clarify, we’re not after Google Latitude, Facebook Places or FourSquare like functionality in terms of grabbing live locations of online members.
Rather, if I go to a group, I should see a map showing markers for locations of all members, based on what the members have provided in their profiles.
Right now, if I go to a member profile page, e.g. on buddypress.org, I already see a map marking that member’s location. The request being made is the logical next step – marking all members of the group on a group page, potentially with the following additional functionality:
1. The markers would use more granular data for location (e.g. complete address, not just city)
2. Clicking on the marker would show a couple of member details, including name and maybe 1-2 other profile items as chosen by site owner.
3. Clicking on member name in the bubble would take to member’s profile page. Or, at least, a link to member profile page would be provided in the bubble.
4. The marker itself would potentially be a tiny profile picture of the respective member.
