    Works on 1.1. Although there are a few bugs. It doesn’t appear to be in active development at the moment however and breaks when used with the new default theme in 1.2-rare (development version of BP). We’re all hoping it will be kept up-to-date since it’s a great and much needed plugin.

    And this sometimes can happen if there are “too many cooks”:

    LOL :)

    Agreed! And generally speaking, you also get what you pay for :-) And most people are also reasonable and can work within your budget. The scope and complexity may have to vary. But most people are willing (within reason) to do what they can for your budget. I’ve worked on projects with budgets as small as $0 and as big as $2,500,000… ‘back in the day’… before the dotcom bubble burst :-)

    @Marc: Requirements is a pretty vague term itself eh? A requirement could be as specific as “must support IE6” (which would have an impact on price) or as general as “must position us as an industry leader”. So requirements can be about business, creative, marketing, functional, technical or other goals.

    The biggest things that would affect price however would be any functional components that BuddyPress doesn’t include out of the box (like Wiki, Document Library, Video Sharing, etc.). Although much of that can be done with plugins… said plugins may still require custom theming and/or some work on integration.

    Complexity of design could mean things like Flash. If Flash work is required, that would cost more. If you require a logo or other branding, that could cost more. But I was more thinking of the complexity of the design in general.

    For instance, this design of mine took almost a month of design, development, research and testing (it works in IE6 believe or not and is designed to have graceful text-resizing… as all my work is. XYZ is a fake name of course):

    http://davidlewis.ca/solutions/

    While this very simple “design” (a freebee for a volunteer organization) took only 2 hours from zero to WordPress theme (p.s. I’m not responsible for any of the horrible content like the logo sidebar… for instance):

    That’s an extreme example… but you get the idea.

    Doesn’t a tagging plugin already exist?

    p.s. Just to clarify… it’s almost impossible (from my point of view) to even give a ballpark based on the information provided. There are too many variables. Everyone has different rates (mine is $50 which is pretty typical… even low perhaps unless you hire a student)… and every project is different. For instance… how complex will the design end up being? What are the project requirements? Would any custom work and/or integration need to be done to pull off those requirements? Etc.

    Nope. Too many variables. Not enough information.

    Oh wait… I think this is the old inline block issue with the buttons in IE. See this ticket:

    What version of BuddyPress?

    I haven’t even looked at it or looked at any code… but based on your description… I’m guessing that the CSS is using a selector that IE doesn’t understand.

    I’m aware of that plugin. But bp-events is the only events plugin that integrates with BuddyPress. With bp-events you can invite friends, associate events with groups, etc. Very different animal.

    Anyway… I haven’t quite given up… but I’m close to it. The new default theme is structured very differently from the old. I understand how it’s organized… such that the main template folder for your component just houses the directory and single views… while the templates for member’s stuff (i.e. your groups, your events, your blogs, etc.) are in “/member/single/…” … and there is only one loop which is loaded below the tabbed navigation via AJAX. I get all that. But trying to re-factor the old bp-events templates to work that way is causing me great pain. LOL. By the time I figure it out… Erwin may have resurfaced and released an update.

    All I know is… my site cannot launch without this component. So at the moment anyway… I’m stuck with trying to hack the old bp-events or launching a 1.1 site with the old bp-events. Ergh :(

    I’ve been trying to hack bp-events to work with the new default theme. Not having much luck I’m afraid. I hope Erwin resurfaces at some point.

    I have both in my header. I have a solid color + logo on one side and a rotating image on the other side. I simply have the rotator portion in it’s own div in a child header.php file. And to create my solid color, I have to override the custom header image feature by putting “!important” in my child CSS for #header.

    @takeo

    @Andy. Yes. Thank you. I was just pointing out that there is no option to use just a background color and no image. You’d have to use an image that was a solid color. Which is fine.

    Thanks Andy. I did not know that. There appears to be no way to use just a color instead of an image though. Although I suppose a single color GIF would be pretty tiny.

    In any case, I find that in general it can be a little tricky to override styles when shortcut declarations are used. If all font settings are set in a single declaration but I only want to override the size… I have to redeclare everything in short form using the “font” property. Certainly not a big deal by any means. In fact, it’s a pretty miniscule. Practically a non-issue. It only came up because I was having a hard time trying to change my header. Didn’t know about the custom header setting.

    @takeo

    Nope. Doesn’t work in Safari / Chrome. There is no “important” in the parent. I know I could make a blank gif… but I’m not sure that’s any less ugly. Anyway… that’s cool. I’ll just use “important!” in the child.

    @takeo

    Participant

    Actually… I just tried that. Doesn’t work.

    @takeo

    Riiiiiiiiiiiiight. Why didn’t I think of that. I’ve never thought of using simple “none” as a shortcut. Thanks. Sorry Andy.

    @takeo

    Andy… please don’t use CSS shortcuts in the 1.2 default theme. It makes overriding a little more difficult / messy if one chooses to use the 1.2 default theme as a parent. For instance… the 1.2 default theme uses a shortcut for background instead of using background-image:

    #header {background: url( ../images/default_header.jpg);}

    Say I want my header to have a background color and no image. This override won’t work:

    #header {background: #f76d16;}

    Nor will this:

    header {background-color: #f76d16; background-image: none;}

    One is forced instead to use the !important declaration so that using the color shortcut can override the image shortcut:

    #header {background: #f76d16 !important;}

    This works… but the important declaration makes me a little queazy. LOL.

    I like the idea of leveraging services like YouTube and Flickr and integrating them into your website using a plugin / API. You don’t reinvent the wheel and you end up with more online “channels” for your content. But the question is always just how well such generic solutions can integrate with your very specific tool (BuddyPress) and project requirements.

    @takeo

    I don’t think that is tabular data actually. Tabular data is two dimensional. The settings page is a form. But forms have always been a tricky thing from both a semantic and styling point of view.

    @takeo

    @dre Well… I’m not really much of a programmer. I’m more of a designer / frontend coder. But if I can get the templates for bp-events working with 1.2… I’ll share.

    @Peter: I don’t care if events are in the core or in a plugin… either way it’s a mission critical component to my site and, I suspect, many sites.

    This already seems to be happening with bp-events. It’s not keeping pace with BP 1.2 development. Which is fine. What do you want for free… right?! But with BP being such a niche right now… we don’t have any other options. We have to live with the broken solution or roll our own. I imagine that as BuddyPress grows in popularity… this won’t be as much of an issue.

    bp-events will work with 1.2 with some template modifications. I’ve been hacking it to work with the 1.2 default theme. I’m about 30% done. I’m starting to lose hope that it will be kept up to date however. The last commit was back in November… and the Trac site is down again. Of course… it’s the holidays right now… so if could just be that. But it seems to me like Erwin is either busy with other things (that probably pay better… LOL) or simply losing interest. Either way, it would be good to know so that perhaps someone else could take over the code. Events is a desperately needed feature of any community site.
