In reply to: Help with Child Theme
Nope. But there are lots of other parameters that template tag will accept:
In reply to: Making User Blogs Part of the Main ThemeGotcha. Before you had said you only wanted posts from the Administrator on the homepage… which would be you… so that’s where I was coming from.
The solution is almost the same however. If you’d like to do this without any plugins… just one little line of code… you could do this in the “loop” on your home.php file.
<?php query_posts('category_name=Featured'); ?>
[your wordpress loop here]
<?php wp_reset_query(); ?>The loop by the way is simply a bit of code that iterates through all the posts for a particular page and displays them. So on the homepage… the loop shows ALL posts by default (up to whatever number you have configured in the dashboard… so the 5 most recent perhaps). If you click on a tag… then the “loop” shows all the posts with that tag. By setting up a custom query on the homepage… you are simply modifying the collection of posts that the loop will iterate through. So that little line of code simply limits the posts that the loop will iterate through as being posts from the category named “Featured”.
In reply to: Making User Blogs Part of the Main ThemeI guess that would work. Seems like a very round about method however and you’re creating lots of blogs and database tables and such that you don’t need if all you want to do is have only YOUR posts show up on the homepage. It that’s the goal… just your posts on the homepage (and it sounds like that based on your last post)… then this is very simple. The solution is already above. Just add that query before the WordPress loop on your home.php file. So simple:
<?php query_posts('author=1'); ?>and reset the query at the end of the loop:
<?php wp_reset_query(); ?>This assumes that your admin account had an author ID of 1… which is safe to assume.
Here is a slightly more complete example. But really… this is an extremely simple loop. You’ll probably want more stuff in there… like tags, dates, categories, etc. But this loop will work to show only posts by author ID 1. I just figured it would be good to see what I’m talking about in more context.
<!-- custom query -->
<?php query_posts('author=1'); ?>
<!-- the loop -->
<?php if (have_posts()): while (have_posts()): the_post(); ?>
<h3><?php the_title(); ?></h3>
<p><?php the_content(); ?></p>
<?php endwhile; else: ?>
<p>No posts.</p>
<?php endif; ?>
<!-- reset the query -->
<?php wp_reset_query(); ?>In reply to: Where/how to download the latest bleeding edge beta?I sure missed it. It’s not like I haven’t viewed the trac before. I’ve even submitted bugs
I feel a little dumb now! But thanks again. Easier than launching my FTP client.
In reply to: Where/how to download the latest bleeding edge beta?Of course… my option only allows you to grab the files. You can’t see any of the commit messages as you could with an actual SVN client. But I’m assuming most of us just want to get the files for our staging server.
You know… I clicked around on trac before… and I have never for the life of me seen that zip download link! Could they make it any less obvious?! LOL. Good to know tho! Thanks. Nice to see the comments too. In the past, I’ve tried using svnX for Mac… with very little luck and a whole lot of headaches.
Not where yet? Having blogs be set up with defined defaults for widgets? As has been stated, that has nothing to do with BuddyPress. As such, it won’t be “resolved” in a future version. But if you head on over to the WordPress MU forums, I’m sure you could find what you’re looking for.
In reply to: Where/how to download the latest bleeding edge beta?I had been doing SVN checkouts (i.e. svn co) from the command line in Mac OS X… but I still had to install a subversion binary before I could do that… or compile one from source. And even with a GUI SVN client you may still need to do that. Not impossible for a newbie with a bit of help from Google… but not necessarily a fun way to spend an afternoon either. LOL.
Then I discovered that I could simply use a plain old GUI FTP client and point it to https://svn.buddypress.org/ using the “WebDav” protocol! Very simple. I can download the trunk just with drag and drop. And to see what revision number we’re on… I just point my web browser to the same URL. By the way, I’m using Panic’s “Transmit” FTP client on the Mac.
In reply to: BuddyPress Links 0.2-RC1 now availableSafari is available for PC. Has been for years. Or you can also test with Chrome. Chrome uses the same rendering engine as Safari (Apple’s Webkit Engine).
In reply to: New BuddyPress 1.2 default themeI think Andy touched on that in another thread. I’ll let him respond but I’m guessing the answer… for now anyway… is probably not.
In reply to: Extending BuddyPress with HTML5We do that now of course too… but our selection of elements is limited.
In reply to: Making User Blogs Part of the Main ThemeSo you would only allow users to post in one blog or the other or both. That would work I guess. Not as fun as trying to set up a custom query for your homepage loop however. LOL.
In reply to: New BuddyPress 1.2 default themeDepending on your audience you don’t necessarily have a choice about IE6. It’s not about you. LOL. I dislike it as much as anyone, but sometimes requirements are requirements. And personally… I’ve never had much problem supporting it. Even with some really far out designs. There are only a few big gottchas and you know that going in and code around it. Simple.
That said… I have no problem whatsoever with Andy not supporting IE6 in the new theme. That’s his choice and it’s a reasonable one. If you really need to use the new theme and you really need it to work on IE6… well… I guess it’s time to start hacking together a conditional ie6 bug fix stylesheet
In reply to: Making User Blogs Part of the Main ThemeContributors, Authors, Editors and Administrators can all write blog posts.

The tricky part is only allowing admin-authored posts in the homepage loop. Not sure how to do that. Perhaps with a conditional or a custom query? I’m not enough of a coder to answer that. Goggle is your friend
If there will be only ONE admin however (you?) then it could be as simple as this (note: change “1” to whatever your author id is).<?php query_posts('author=1'); if (have_posts()): while (have_posts()): the_post(); ?>
yay. my posts.
<?php endwhile; else: ?>
oops. no posts.
<?php endif; wp_reset_query(); ?>You can use the same idea to display only posts from a certain category (i.e…. featured)… but I’m pretty certain you can’t restrict what categories a person can post in based on user level. So that probably wouldn’t help you.
In reply to: New BuddyPress 1.2 default theme@jivany: That is the case in a lot of corporate environments. Maybe that’s what happens when you don’t upgrade your OS for 7 years? Most corporate environments never “upgraded” from XP. And who can blame them!
The company I work at is 3,000 people and everyone is on XP. The only supported browser is IE6. You’re not even allowed to run 7 or 8. Being a designer… I’m on a Mac. One of only two in the entire place
LOL. I have every browser under the sun installed. For testing.
In reply to: Forum Attachments for BuddyPressI installed the original and it didn’t work. Haven’t tried the ported version mentioned in this thread.
In reply to: New BuddyPress 1.2 default themeSounds reasonable. My opinion is that we’re not QUITE at the point yet where we can completely ignore IE6. I’m fine with aesthetic issues… but I believe web sites still need to be reasonably functional in IE6. They shouldn’t break completely. I haven’t look at the new theme in IE6 yet.
In reply to: User / messaging exploit? Causing spam@Jeff. I don’t know… anyone who could solve the Unified Field Theory is not quite human in my books. LOL
We could call it CAPTCGA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Geeks Apart)
In reply to: User / messaging exploit? Causing spamYou know you’ve made it when… LOL

I would highly recommend against closing off the private messaging system or even allowing it as an option. Being able to message someone you are not friends with is a HUGE use case in my opinion. Crucial even. I wouldn’t give users the option to set it to friends only. Or at least… I would like the site admin to have the ability to disable that option.
Personally… I despise CAPTHCA. Don’t pass your problems off on your users. Like websites that say “Best viewed in” or “Set your screen size to”… etc. Any solution must be invisible to users. I’ve heard of people using javascript events (mouse click for instance) as an alternative. Sounds good to me. Here’s something I found with a quick Google search.

Alternately… you could use a simple math question… like as in example. LOL

In reply to: New BuddyPress 1.2 default themeSo if one were to use a child that simply tweaks a parent via CSS (as well as probably a header and footer override)… it would probably make the most sense to use the NEW theme as your parent since I assume the classic theme will… at some point… NOT be kept as up-to-date with all the latest changes?
In reply to: Only one password field?Probably, but I would strongly recommend against it.
Which files and dirs can you not delete and what are their owners and groups? They might be set to apache:apache… but if you SFTP in using your root user and password… you should be able to delete anything.
In reply to: Removing TimeSince from Sitewide ActivityWhen it comes to hiding stuff… I’m always a fan of the ultra-low-tech CSS approach:
span.time-since {display: none;}There are two instances of this class in the screen.file by the way
.activity-list li span.time-since {}
.widget_bp_activity_widget span.time-since {}You may want to use those classes to target where you want ‘time since’ to show or not show.
If you dumped and imported the entire database… there are a number of settings that could cause your newly installed site not to work… such as url and domain settings and installed plugins… that kind of thing.
Also… how is it that you are on a dedicated box and can’t delete things? I assume if you’re on a dedicated box that you would have root access.
In reply to: New Groupblog PluginI believe that group documents (via posting or uploading a file???) is on the roadmap… but it’s a long way out.
No need for a plugin… just make your own copy of the registration template in your child theme and delete the optional fields. Or maybe even just use CSS to hide them.
