@21cb: I haven’t actually posted in this thread yet… but fwiw… I agree with you
In reply to: Wire Posts in bp 1.2I actually removed the search from my theme because of the fact that it’s scoped. To fussy and confusing for my non-techie users.
Hey Mike… I had to use !important to make my custom header override via CSS.
I had no idea you would keep the themes where they were?! That’s new. Cool!
No… the themes go in /themes… but perhaps if you’re using bp-default as a parent and activating the child… you could leave bp-default anywhere. Not sure. Never tried it. I just put all my themes in “/themes”.
Anyway. It’s really simple. Just make a new folder inside /themes and put a CSS file in there with the line “Template: bp-default”. Done. You now have a child theme. It doesn’t really do anything until to start adding overriding styles and templates… but you now had a child theme.
You don’t need anything as a starting point for a child theme. Just make a new folder in the themes directory called whatever you want and create a CSS file inside that folder that includes this line inside a comment block at the top:
Template: bp-defaultDone. You now have a parent (bp-default) and child (whatever you decided to call it). Start adding CSS rules to override the parent… start adding templates to override the parent templates… etc.
@Erwin: Ya… I don’t blame you at all and I fully support bp-events being 1.2+ only. No backwards compatibility. The new default theme is great… big improvement on the front end… but the file structure has been radically altered. It’s going to be a pain for a lot of people. I tried making new bp-events templates myself for 1.2 and gave up after about a week. I’m glad you’re on the case because I had no luck.
In reply to: Multiple user types – possible?@Peter: WordPress is the same. If you want to do something that it doesn’t do by default you have to dig into the Codex and forums and figure out a little bit of PHP. The only changes you can make with “some html/css” are visual changes. No matter what the software is. If you take a look through the WordPress.org forums you will find thousands of posts with people discussing code, php, template tags, action hooks, custom queries, arrays. And WordPress plugins break after updates too. All the time.
Sorry… what was the original question again? Oh yah… different user types. I guess that has already been answered above… as best as it can be. Topic has been marked as “resolved” too.
In reply to: Multiple user types – possible?@Peter: Yes… BuddyPress is quite new. Comparing it to WordPress isn’t really fair since WordPress has been around for 7 years. BuddyPress hasn’t even turned 1 yet. The first public release was last spring.
In reply to: Multiple user types – possible?@Bowe: The Lynda tutorials are fantastic. So much better than a book because you can watch and code at the same time (just pause the video). And the concepts are explained AS you see the code being typed in the video. So much better than a book. Of course… one tutorial won’t turn you into a programmer. You have to actually do it and practice it to get any good at it. Like anything. But it’s a great start and at least you will be able to look at existing code and understand (or at least get the gist of) what is going on.
In reply to: Multiple user types – possible?@Peter Separation of logic, data and presentation doesn’t mean that you don’t have to know how to code if a program doesn’t have the logic you require. And I disagree that the layers are less separate in BuddyPress than WordPress.
If you want to learn PHP… I would highly recommend lynda.com. I use their training videos all the time and they are worth every cent.
In reply to: Starting point – groupsSounds like you’re using the classic theme. My guess would be here:
/wp-content/themes/bp-sn-parent/groups/single/home.php
But maybe make your mods in a child theme copy of the file instead… i.e.:
/wp-content/themes/bp-child-theme/groups/single/home.php
In reply to: Message all Group Members@D Cartwright: Okay… I know I’m jacking my own thread here… but how is that going anyway? The groupwiki project?
In reply to: Message all Group MembersI need a solution that works now. So I guess the only option will be to encourage people to use the forums instead of updates and pair that with one of the two plugins I mentioned above.
In reply to: Wire Posts in bp 1.2Good to know. Webkit bugs are so rare. Compared to IE for instance.
In reply to: Wire Posts in bp 1.2It’s not a matter of not liking it Bowe… I like the idea a lot… just not the way it’s being implemented.
In reply to: Site Wide Activity stream not workingHave you tried updating to WPMU 2.9.1. My feed wasn’t working at all with BP 1.2 and WPMU 2.8.6.
In reply to: Wire Posts in bp 1.2Confession: I really dislike Twitter a great deal. Can you tell?
In reply to: Wire Posts in bp 1.2When you send a private message you see their name in a button beside the textarea. When you send a public message you get a textarea pre-populated with @username. I think if you instead got a textarea with their name in a button beside the textarea… just like a private message… that would be more consistent. It would also be less prone to user error. For instance, I can envision someone wanting to public message “Jim Smith” clicking the button and seeing “@unibomber” in the textarea and thinking… what the?! And then deleting the offending weird text. It sounds ridiculous… but sit down with some non-computer savvy users and you will be amazed :o)
That said… it sounds like you’re aware of that and will be putting some thought into it in future releases. So that’s great.
I guess the question is… if we your don’t rely on the @ shorthand… how would someone make mention of someone else without using the “Public Message” button? Could there be some kind of auto-complete text box for targeting your comments? Or would the @ shorthand simply remain as-is and be considered a “power user” feature.
Just thinking out loud :o)
In reply to: Wire Posts in bp 1.2I guarantee you the @ thing will confuse 80-90% of my users.
In reply to: Feature Request: HastagsI guess @ and # works great for people who understand it. Just like a UNIX prompt works great for people who know how to use it. So no harm including that ability for those folks. But I don’t know. I think the average user would be confused. And the average user is not on Twitter. So it would be new to them.
The other thing is, you’re relying on raw text strings for this functionality give good results. If you type @davelewis or @david lewis or @davidlouis… I won’t see your mention of me. I think there’s probably a better way. A more foolproof and friendly ‘point and click’ way. Or maybe… crazy talk here… when you type a word starting with @… an auto-complete list could popup and change as you type.
Overall though, I see the whole @ and # thing on Twitter as something that developed out of necessity due to Twitter’s severely limited functionality. It’s certainly not what made the site big I don’t think. What made it big was the fact that you could follow anyone you want and that you could do it on your cell phone. So it became a kind of world-wide MSN that you could use anywhere. Just with a radically stripped down feature set and only 140 character messages.
In reply to: Wire Posts in bp 1.2The @ thing is a Twitter hack which was came about out of necessity due to Twitter’s limitations. BuddyPress has no such limitations. Let’s not copy Twitter’s @ and # hacks. BuddyPress can do the same thing in a much more user-friendly and intuitive way… by clicking an action link for instance. Relying on raw text strings? Bad idea. I think.
In reply to: Soon to release bp group control pluginJust want to chime in and say much love to you all
I need better group management and it sounds like this will be the answer.
In reply to: Show menu bar only logged in usersConditionals… i.e.
<?php if ( is_user_logged_in() ) : ?>
logged in stuff
<?php endif; ?>
<?php if ( !is_user_logged_in() ) : ?>
logged out stuff
<?php endif; ?>In reply to: How to categorize Groups ?I have the same issue. My Search & Rescue organization doesn’t like the idea of having committee groups (like Search Management) mixed in with more informal groups… like say… a Friday Night Social group or Hiking group or what have you.
I’ll probably resort to a simple naming convention… i.e. “Committee – Search Management”. Not great. But at least they could sort by name.
Sticky groups would be very useful as well. For instance… we will have one general membership group that everyone will belong to. It would be great it that group could always float to the top.
In reply to: Best Event Plugin?He squashed a number of bugs on Sunday too… and updated it for 1.1.3. In time I have faith that bp-events will be a great solution.
I’m also considering using an interim solution until a buddypress-specific solution becomes available. The WPMU option is not an option since I would not be able to afford on-going support and updates @ $79/mo.
