it’s more about how many people will be using your site at any given time if you have buddypress and especially if your theme is displaying buddypress info on most of your pages then you will almost certainly need vps to be happy with your load times.

Well i think you have some competition already but there’s certainly nothing wrong with a new outfit trying to help promote what can be done with wordpress/buddypress so i think you would be welcomed in that endeavor. Not sure i have a good answer for that last one maybe sites like yours? If your site becomes popular and effective enough perhaps…[Read more]

making the page private isn’t going to work you’d need to be hiding it through css i believe. either that or probably a custom filter in the bp-custom file but i wouldn’t know personally how to do the second thing.

how exactly did you “get rid of” the members tab?

also you could make the default wp role author rather then subscriber if you were thinking along the lines of regular posting authority.

i believe these are all supposed to be on by default but the default active components has changed recently i can’t seem to dig up which ones they are. anyway go to the buddypress section under settings and tab over to components to ensure the activity tracking is enabled.

sounds like maybe you network activated the plugins in question? if so those plugins will not normally show up in the individual sites plugin list.

Ben Hansen replied to the topic Question about Hosting? in the forum Requests & Feedback 11 years, 4 months ago
Depends on your traffic levels but probably you want to get off of shared hosting and move to at least vps. If you had multisite, you’d know it believe me upgrading to that is not typically difficult but i would move your hosting first. Personally i would never use windows hosting for wordpress (or any other time i had a choice).

Ben Hansen replied to the topic Tranfering / Moving Domain Name in the forum How-to & Troubleshooting 11 years, 5 months ago
yeah the hostile trick is a good way to “trick” your computer thinking a domain exists somewhere its doesn’t thus allowing you to not need to change the domain in the first place. that being said as Hugo mentions the codex pages tend to try to address the entire learning curve of any particular process meaning that they are giving you a bunch of…[Read more]

all of that is handled by the wordpress side of things, buddypress shouldn’t have any trouble handling a domain change. obviously any permalinks would change however.

as far as why other sites are doing things the way they are we are making a bunch of assumptions right off the bat but from outside appearances the site you mentioned does not appear to be using buddypress. often times the forum/community software is a different platform from wordpress this is not the case with buddypress, that might explain why…[Read more]

@synaptic i’ve noticed that sometimes there is a lag with forum posts showing up.
@richardicanie buddypress is designed to be fully integrated with your primary wordpress installation. If you are using multisite then you would network activate buddypress. Be advised that although the various sub sites are part of the buddypress integration for…[Read more]

getting hacked is a little bit like getting pregnant, theres no such thing as just a little bit. if they got in they have all of your access information, more then likely.
if i knew that a crook that had already proven interested in breaking into my house and had stolen my keys the very least i would do is to change the locks.
just saying…

fyi if your site has been hacked even on a low level you must clean it out and change all the associated admin and database passwords or you will be letting them right back in.

its still a bad sign that base 64 stuff is usually a sign of a open door that has been used to hack your site.
