You could take a look at elgg (elgg.org).
Okay, I take it the custom-styles is in case I want to write some. So that explains that.
As for the missing background.gif, got any ideas?
This still doesn’t solve my blank screens. I can see if it is a conflict with another WPMU plugin, maybe the privacy one.
Well, I can’t find those files in the trunk… What do you think?
These are the errors I’m getting and they ARE theme related:
[Fri Dec 12 06:21:47 2008] [error] [client 166.129.121.43] File does not exist: …/wp-content/themes/buddypress-home/images/background.gif, referer: http://…/wp-content/themes/buddypress-home/style.css
[Thu Dec 11 21:43:13 2008] [error] [client 166.129.9.233] File does not exist: …/wp-content/themes/buddypress-home/custom-styles.css, referer: http://…/wp-content/themes/buddypress-home/style.css
I’ll go hunt down those files, I guess. Beats me why they haven’t been going over with the rest of the files every time I update the trunk.
The site in my profile is NOT the site I am using for a WPMU-BP test. On the test site, I am using the WPMU 2.7 RC-whatever-it-is.
I DO have all the bp components installed. I made the switch to using the member-themes folder but I’ll take a look at that specifically since you mentioned the theme. Maybe I’ve done something wrong there.
And I’ll check the error logs. Thanks.
The latest trunk took away all the characters.
Still having issues with everything in the top navigation bar under “Account”. Every link except Logout takes me to a blank page.
I’m going to ask about that in another topic.
They did show up properly.
Another option is iMountain (imountain.com). They offer clustered hosting to VPS to dedicated, without cpu processing limits.
@burtadsit — I should have explained better. As a new WPMU user without any tweaks whatsoever, nor any plugins, my only concern has been to get BP running. I didn’t mean for anyone to go out of their way to create a whole other test site. What I meant was, could someone who is using WPMU and BP in the root of the domain confirm that the problems I am having are a result of running WPMU and BP in a subfolder?
But, no need. I rustled up a spare domain and tested it myself. EVERY ONE of my issues are resolved now.
1) No login problem.
2) Groups showing up in the Main Site Admin area.
3) Posts writing to /news and showing up on the ‘News’ page (no need to change permalinks).
I’m really, really relieved. And I hope that my results will help others. I don’t know if the issues I encountered are related to BP and WPMU running together, or with WPMU itself, or with BP, or all of the above. But since my installations were broken in a subfolder, I believe that a subfolder installation of the social network should be avoided.
@Andy, I believe it would be helpful in the Docs section to let folks know that BP and WPMU work best if installed in the root folder of a domain. Perhaps you have this somewhere, but I didn’t see it anywhere and I read everything I could find here.
I’m so glad you brought this up:
Originally wpmu had to be installed in the doc root for bp to work.
I have wpmu and bp installed in a subfolder called /wpmu. This could be causing all my problems:
1) group administration (no groups showing up)
2) login.php not wanting to go to a subfolder
3) posts not showing up in /news
However, I don’t have a root domain available for testing. So if someone else could confirm, it would really help me out.
Thank you, but no, it didn’t work.
I am up to trunk 547. Logged out, logged in. Now, the groups page of the dashboard says nothing, not even “no groups to display.” I logged in with two different user accounts, and same thing. When I viewed Site Admin > Groups through two of the added blogs the groups show up then.
I’m aware that I might be doing something wrong, but I can’t figure out what it is. I’ve reinstalled a couple times and followed Andy’s instructions to the T.
Andy, that did not work for me.
In trunk 544, my main installation still says “no groups to display” but the two added blogs show the groups. I think I found a ticket in trac for the groups not displaying, so I’d say Andy is working on it and aware of it.
Good to know others are interested in limiting group creation. Thanks for chiming in.
It would appear that if you go to Site Admin – Blogs and click “edit” on the blog in question, that you can edit the permalink structure in the appropriate field. (Scroll way down.) Edit out the /blog and click Update.
However, Settings – Permalinks doesn’t reflect this change.
But when I Publish a new post, the permalink now becomes /news/post-name-etc.
But then I click on “News” on the home page, and the posts don’t show up.
Well, that’s what’s happening with me anyway. I am on trunk 544.
I went to the Customize Permalink Structure page but the best I can get is mysite.com/blog/news/. Is there a different place to change the blog permalink? Thanks.
I also have this issue with the main installation. However, in a blog I added there is not a default /blog in the custom permalink structure.
I am on trunk 539.
Now this is getting more weird. In my main installation, no groups show up in the Groups tab. However, in a blog I added, all the groups show up in the Groups tab.
I am still on trunk 539.
I am considering creating a social network, and I wish to pre-define the groups, which would therefore provide structure to the forum topics within groups. If the network members were allowed to create groups, I see potential overlap (in my particular community) in topics, discussions, etc. I wish to keep it simple to my own pre-defined groups or groups I choose to add in the future. Quoting from About Buddy Press:
“Groups also include a group forum (bbPress), wire, and photo gallery. These features can be selectively disabled by group creator.”
When I enable the group forum, I believe that limiting group creation will keep forums more organized and therefore, more easily navigated by members.
So that’s why.
If this isn’t possible, then I would ask, is it possible to use the forum without the groups? Or would that entail a separate installation of bbPress?
Thanks.
