Buddyvents – New Events Plugin

    Hey All,

    last sunday I found out that a recent project needed an events plugin. Being not too happy (for various not really relevant reasons) with the current solutions I quickly whipped one up. You can have a look here: http://test.shabushabu.eu/events/.

    Every member can publish an event, but if you’re also a group admin you can attach an event to one of your groups. Coordinates get automatically geocoded from the location. Event activity gets displayed on the events page and an event can be edited and features an overview page of all members.

    The messages component is needed as that handles all the invitations. It also needs the friends plugin for the autocompletion to invite members to work.

    There’s a bit more so if you want to have a play, go ahead…

    Here’s a feature list:
    * Events can be created by any user
    * Events can be attached to a group, if the event creator is a group admin
    * Event Privacy that includes group integration
    * Activity stream integration
    * Friends component integration (used for invitations)
    * Event comments
    * Events search
    * RSS Feeds for groups and users
    * Geocoded locations for events
    * Google Maps v3 overview of all events
    * Adds basic information like address to groups
    * Sidebar Widget
    * Support for BP-Moderation
    * Calendar integration
    * Restrict number of attendees
    * Recurrent events (daily, weekly, monthly, yearly)

    Dude – I want it. I have mixed feelings about the GSOC Eventpress effort. It’s kinda bloated and there is still too difficult a workflow process (I’d have to tweak all of the templates just to de-confuse my members)

    How can I get my hands on this and take for a spin?

    I like the way you “whipped one up”, with geocoding to boot!
    It’s simple, elegant, and has all the required elements. Nice touch with the date picker too :-)
    Creating an event and uploading an image is a snap.

    Noticed 1 thing not working though: “Show new events” activity filter displays “…no activity” message.

    Darn… now that I’ve created an event, I wanted to edit it, but I can’t access the site anymore… EDIT: never mind that…it’s back.

    Like @Mike, can I “get my hands on it” too?

    Editing an event creates this error:
    Catchable fatal error: Object of class stdClass could not be converted to string in /www/htdocs/w00b8ce6/test/wp-content/plugins/buddyvents/core/bpe-screen.php on line 586

    But, click browser “Back” button and “Events” tab, event edits ARE saved.

    Also, apostrophes aren’t escaped and generate forward slashes after each save.

    Looks good clean & simple, maybe in future integrate [eventbrite] http://developer.eventbrite.com/ with this cool plugin

    As far as getting your hands on it, it’s still not certain that I’ll be able to release it. Keep your fingers crossed :)

    As for your bug reports, it’s all been fixed, thank you. Plus I added in some minor improvements.

    definitely keep us posted, I’d totally pay to not use jet events anymore. unless yours doesn’t have american am/pm time either :(

    The events plugin is looking good. :) If you would add the capability of group events would be cool.

    You can already attach an event to a group. The only restriction is that you need to be the admin of a group.

    But I am not able to create an event when visiting a group (http://test.jobboardr.com/groups/test-group/events/) or I just don’t see it. ^^

    Nope, there is only one place to create an event. And only if you are the admin of a group can you attach an event to it. If you’re not an admin, you won’t even see the group related stuff.

    thanks for clarifying

    Ok, guys! I’ll be able to release the plugin after all. There’ll be a price tag of around EUR 25 attached to it, which includes support and updates.

    The plugin has been built on BP 1.3, so keep that in mind!

    how does one buy it from you?

    Fantastic news! I can’t wait. I also have mixed feelings about EventPress. Will your plugin offer activity feed integration and (less importantly) RSVP and recurrence?

    @finni3

    Looks nice and simplistic!

    I’ll wait for BP 1.2.6 and see how it works on that, then people can buy it through our online shop.

    There are activity entries for a published event, when members attend an event, might attend an event and don’t attend an event anymore. Recurrence is not supported yet.

    Alright!

    I added support for BP 1.2.5.2 and support for BuddyPress Moderation. Events can be searched now and I added a global events feed and group events feeds. There’s also a widget for the sidebar.

    I’ll do some more testing, but it’ll be available within a day or two!

    Oh, I have also added an events calender. Forgot about that…

    @Travel-Junkie, looks like a great plugin.

    I have some question:
    I need the possibility to attach an event with a group.
    If the group is a private hidden group, the events attached to this group should be visible only to the group members.
    Does the group events work also with hidden groups? and will the hidden event be visible for group members in the event calender view?

    Also I need the possibility, to restrict an event to n attenders. So if for example max attenders == 3, after the 3 attender, the registration need to be closed.
    I would be grateful if you could answer me my questions thanks ;-Sven

    The plugin still needs some work to properly check for hidden and private groups. I’ll have to do some fancy db querying to get there, but it’s in the works :)
    The plugin as it is now is ready for release, but our online shop needs another 2 days, so the release date now is this monday (11. Oct.). I’ll have the group stuff properly sorted by then.

    Restricting the attendees is a good idea, so I’ll put that on the roadmap. Right now it’s not possible

    I’ve set up a new testsite running on BP 1.2.5.2 and the compatible BuddyVents (I know, what a stupid name :)) version:

    I will, once it’s set up properly (next monday). Still some things to sort out.

    The events calendar is now fully compatible with private/hidden groups. To see a public event for a private/hidden group the loggedin user needs to be a member of that group. If the event is private the user needs to be a group member and be invited to the event for the event to show up.

    That was the easy bit. Now I’ll have to do the same thing for the loop :)

    I’ll have a look at restricting registration to a certain number of people over the weekend as well.

    Can’t wait ! I was currently trying to adapt and existing wp plugin to do exactly what you just described…If you need any help translating the plugin into french, please let me know.
