if an established site is currently using group forums but would like to use plugins for bbpress 2.2+ – is the only option to upgrade to site wide forum or will there a way to somehow upgrade the group forums to be 2.2+ “compatible”? One concern is that group forums will no longer look seemless with the rest of the site. If 2.2+ is a must, will the next version allow bbpress plugin to be styled to group forums look?

@intimez the difference is that the internal BP/bbPress group forums are table-based while the bbPress sitewide and group forums are table-less. If you’ve customized the look of your group forums, you’d just need to port over any customization to the table-less ones in the group area.

Good to hear the styling can be passed over from the current groups forum into the new bbpress plugin. Thought it would be stuck with the site wide forums style. Thanks @mercime
