Installed, but nothing showing

Hello folks. Trying to get started with BuddyPress. I’ve installed and activated it, but I can’t find how to do anything with it! I’m looking at a video on You Tube and my BuddyPress Setting page looks different. When I go to my site, there’s nothing to do with BuddyPress showing.

My BP Settings page shows the Components tab (all components activated).

It shows the Pages tab (I’ve created WP pages to associate BuddyPress ‘activity streams’, ‘user groups’, and ‘members’ – as BP seemed to want me to do).

The Settings page shows the Settings tab (all options are activated).

UNLIKE in the video though, I don’t have a Forums tab in my BP Settings window.

When I go to my site, I see no signs of BuddyPress installation at all. I’m at a bit of a loss. I want BuddyPress to allow me to enable people to join the site and have profiles. But I can’t seem to get anything going at all; there seems to be nothing to work with.

Have I got a faulty installation? What am I missing? All help welcomed!

    MG.

I have WP 3.7.1 installed (current)
The BP version is 1.8.1 (current)
WP Theme is Blackbird 1.1.9 (current)
I’ve upgraded from recent versions of all of these since the summer, but I’ve had the same problem all along.

The other plugins I have installed are:
    Askimet
    BigContact Contact Page
    Black Studio Tiny MCE Widget
    Easy Shortcode Buttons
    Jetpack by WordPress
    Page Tagger
    Simple Page Sidebars
    WP Show IDs
    WP You Tube Player

All plugins are updated, and all except Askimet are activated.
Blackbird is customised using its own customising functionality. Plus I have tweaked a bit of HTML, with the CSS added to the theme’s Styling Options box.

My hosting site is Blue Host.

I seem to be missing stuff, and I don’t know whether it’s me or the plug-in. I’m not seeing a Forums tab in the Settings window, and I’m not seeing anything new at all, post BP installation, when I look at the website itself.

Should I be seeing more than I am seeing directly after installing BP? If not, why not?

That’s an old video. Forums are now installed via the bbPress plugin https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/

Since BP 1.7, BP is compatible with most WP themes i.e., if you go to your site’s Members page for example, you’ll see the BP member directory component on that page. If you’re not seeing the Member’s directory using the slug/page name you used for it, try changing to the BP Default theme in Apperance > Themes and navigate to the members directory page or the component pages you have activated.

Hi mercime. Thanks for your reply. I was under the impression that bbPress (I don’t actually know what that is) is integrated into the new BuddyPress, so I should have it if BP is installed.

I’ve settled in at the codex you directed me to, trying to work my way from the very start. In the Before You Install section, it mentions ‘pretty permalinks’. But again, I don’t know what that is. In the Settings>Permalinks page in my Dashboard, there’s no reference to it. Searching for it as a plug-in doesn’t seem to find anything.

@sencerim you do not need to turn multisite on? You have to give more info about your installation. Site URL? Throw-way username and password?

    @mark-gordon
go to wp-admin dashboard. Look for the default WP menu on the left side of your screen Settings > Permalinks.

@mercime Yes – that’s where I was looking. I have no reference to Pretty Permalinks on that page.
