I think that it’s one of most important feature that will be added..
I study semantic web.. and we pose at the basic tags and categories. If Groups are not tagged or categorized, pages are not semantics.
i am also keen on getting custom fields and other extensions put in the groups… has anyone tried this yet.. i posted a long comment in groups custom fields.. too..

it would be nice to have some kind of group types with it’s custom fields and on group creating for user to choose which group type he wants
i’ve implemented such functionality already using the idea of structured blogging plugin and i store custom fields as xml, but i’d like to have this feature as built-in

I can easily see this added to BuddyPress, just make it another field like “news”. it would be admin controlled, which I think is personally fine. Then adjust the groups search to search those tags/keywords. Am i missing something?

If this does happen i thought i should mention that its probably going to need some admin management so we can assign existing groups to categories.
I’m about to add nearly 100 groups and i’d hate to have to delete them or loose them whilst moving over to the new (if planned) tagging / categorizing method.
