In reply to: Anyone else working on integrating Gigya?
No, you wouldn’t – it already works with facebook. It’s just not the best integration if the user logs in with facebook but instead of seeing their flattering facebook profile picture, they see a random and crudely drawn “wackytar” (or whatever these default wp/bp avatars are called)
In reply to: Ignore and Report function in the activity stream.Brilliant!
It would be very easy to modify your forum code so that only registered members can view posts. You could say “if the current user is not logged in, display a ‘sorry’ message, else proceed with setting up and displaying the forum posts. You could even set it up so they could view a few teaser posts at the top, and then display the ‘you must login’ message. I may in fact try this out on a few groups!
Check your plugins list, and that will tell you what version of BP you have, though if you just installed automatically, you probably have a 1.2 version.
I would switch to the bp default theme and see if the gravatar are still pixillated. Assuming not, you have a theme issue, and you’ll either need to find the code that calls the gravatar to appear, or check with the theme author to see if he can recommend a fix.
The promise of the Internet is fulfilled… you have created the most specific niche site on the World Wide Web. “So yeah, we’re in to aquariums… no, not fish, but the plants. You know, acquatic plants. And we’re from Connecticut. “
You also have the longest URL I think I have ever seen, outside of parody sites. acquaticplants.com is available – you should grab that and run with it.
In terms of the pixillated gravatar: is this also a problem in the default BP theme? It seems like it might be an issue with the “Cosmic Buddy” theme you’re using. I’ve had similar issues with BP avatars that I’ve been able to fix by changing the args for the avatar function from ‘thumb’ to ‘full’.
It’s also very fast – what are you hosting on?
In reply to: Anyone else working on integrating Gigya?Has anybody got the problem with the profile photo is not linking using Gigya fixed?
I haven’t heavily tested Gigya yet, but it seems to work “out of the box” with buddypress. The lack of facebook photo seems to be the only real downside to it. While that’s not a show stopper, it would be nice if that could be fixed. I unfortunately don’t know the facebook API from adam – can anyone give us hints on where to start?
In reply to: Forum tags – I can add them, but can't see themAndy Peatling has said that better forum tag support is coming in the ‘next’ release of BP. This was right before 1.2.3 came out, so not sure he meant 1.2.4. But unless he has changed his mind, it is coming.
I also give props to r-a-y for turning me on to this yesterday in a different thread. A couple things about poedit that are not obvious: it saves a compiled version (.mo) by default – spent ten minutes looking for how to save a .mo when in fact it had been automatically created. Also, you may find it easier to edit in smultron or other text editor and then compile using poedit.
Remaining question: do I need to keep updating my po file as the bp core changes??? It seems like the po calls are directly linked to code line numbers?
In reply to: group membership: double membership bug?Glad you found this and thanks for updating TRAC!
no thoughts on this?
I had an idea that this could be accomplished by creating a “update friends only” function that creates a value like to_friends in the activity_meta database table, but then the problem becomes, how do you pull activity from the database without throwing off the count. The quick fix is to simply remove “to_friends” activity updates from the activity array, but that brings you back to the problem of activity stream atrophy.
In reply to: Post Counter By User and rankingtry the “rate forum posts” plugin… it may be possible to edit it to achieve that behavior?
In reply to: How do you show a member's total post count?Why wouldn’t this work?:
$blog_post_count = result of whatever function you created to count blog posts. Then:
if ($blog_post_count > 0) echo “Blog posts: ” . $blog_post_count;
So if it’s 0, nothing gets displayed.
I’m at a convenient but vaguely unsatisfying stopping point in this saga.
I ended up nuking all the lovely AJAX buttons on the /activity page in favor of HTML form buttons like this one
<li style="float:left;" <?php if ($_POST["activity-tab"] == "friends") { echo 'class="selected"'; }?>">
<form action="" method="post">
<input name="activity-tab" value="friends" type="hidden" />
<input style="border:0px" type="submit" value="My Friends" />
</form>
</li>Then later include()ing a custom stream and resetting the $_POST value to empty:
...
<?php if( $_POST["activity-tab"] == "friends" ) { $_POST["activity-tab"] = ""; include( 'activity-loop-friends.php' ); } ?>
...The ideal solution here would be to somehow rewrite the cookie/display functions in global.js to “forget” the user’s last selected tab, but I was not smart enough to figure that one out…
In reply to: Facebook's PatentAs an armchair coder, I’m not qualified to comment on any of this…
In reply to: Advanced Search plugin neededYou could also potentially use the “Search Engine” plugin by Scott Kingsley Clark:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search-engine/
It works as a spider so it indexes all content on your site (so I’m guessing it would include BP content)… I should state that I haven’t used this though.
OK, I tried Scott’s “Search Engine” plugin on BP. It is well intended, but still in very deep beta. As far as I could tell, it was only indexing blog posts, and I couldn’t seem to test even that, because each time I hit the search box, the result was always a single, non-clickable Google Search Result unrelated to the content that should have been indexed.
Google Custom Search also seems to have issues with BP, as it was not indexing forum posts. Perhaps a site map needs to be submitted for GCS to pick up on forum posts?
In reply to: How do you show a member's total post count?snark, try this and let me know if it works? it is designed to count all forum topics started by the user. Because the bp_has_activities() only accepts one action type (I think), you would have to create 2 functions like this and add them together – one for new_forum_topics and one for new_forum_posts.
function get_new_forum_topic_count_by_user( $user_id ) {
$args = array(
'per_page' => 10000,
'show_hidden' => true,
'user_id' => $user_id,
'action' => 'new_forum_topic'
);
if ( bp_has_activities( $args ) ) {
global $activities_template;
$count = $activities_template->total_activity_count;
} else {
$count = 0;
}
return $count;
}In reply to: Spam, Spam and more spamHashcash 4.5.1. doesn’t work for me anymore…
It does look like the spammers are starting to break through Hashcash again. I just got a new splog signup 11 minutes ago.
Sorry I missed this. I’ll review that and see if I can contribute any meaningful new pointers to the codex .
I guess I should have started here:
https://buddypress.org/forums/tags/translation
OK, so I found buddypress.pot – can anyone explain how to work with .pot files? Can I just edit this and the changes will magically appear in my theme?
In reply to: Tweetstream (twitter plugin) Beta testers needed!Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in xxxx/wp-content/plugins/tweetstream/twitter/EpiCurl.php on line 64
I’m also getting this one a lot, particularly when I change themes.
Looks like this was just filed as a bug: http://faboo.nl/bugs/tweetstream/ticket/21/
In reply to: Forum Reply DisconnectedIf you click “view” in the activity stream, it takes you directly to the forum topic so you can reply. So that pretty much already exists. Or is there some other functionality you are looking for, like linking directly to the reply anchor?
In global.js, I believe the function that handles this is bp_init_activity(). If you comment the call to this function out (around line 15 of global.js), it should stop the cookie from overriding your default settings.
HOLD THE PHONE. Simply commenting out bp_init_activity() doesn’t work. Reloading the page resets the tab, but the content stays the same as the previous selected tab.
Next, I will try Andy’s suggestion, but I don’t understand exactly what he is suggesting:
You can add them in the template to force override (create a child theme and override activity/activity-loop.php):
<?php if ( bp_has_activities( bp_ajax_querystring( ‘activity’ ) . ‘&scope=friends’ ) ) : ?>
Posted 1 day ago #
Is he suggesting that the child theme have different activity loop files for each navbar entry? So you would have
/activity/activity-loop.php
/activity/activity-loop-my-friends.php
/activity/activity-loop-my-groups.php
/activity/activity-loop-my-mentions.php
And then maybe make the navbar links into HTML forms and call those loops conditionally based on which HTML form is clicked?
In reply to: Tweetstream (twitter plugin) Beta testers needed!When you post a forum topic it’s not being sent to either FB or twitter. Forum replies are sent but not when you start a topic.
Me too. Also, you have to type “#TWITTER” otherwise the forum reply does not get sent.
I added a bug ticket for this at the official support site for this plugin:
http://faboo.nl/bugs/tweetstream/ticket/18/
If you are also having the problem, please update the ticket so the developer knows about it.
I’d recommend downloading BP 1.2.3 and doing a local search on the files, especially if you plan on doing any more customization – this will save you a lot of time.
That said, bp-core-templatetags.php probably has most of the functions related to this…
