In reply to: Opening page different than member’s page
https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/members-only-buddypress#post-121296 ? Chris Clayton discussed a similar method here
Having different menus for logged in users is discussed here – also see here
In reply to: Best Way to do a 301 RedirectBefore editing it would be a good idea to make a copy of the original .htaccess file in case something goes wrong…..
The single line(s) can go on their own individual lines. At the end of the file should be fine, just don’t break up connected sets of lines like the permalinks settings.
301 is a ‘Permanently Moved’ redirect (there are others include temp redirect) – google (and others) crawling your site should know what it means…..
Unless you have problems with the htaccess file, there is no reason to remove the lines from htaccess, so anybody who comes across them in future should also be seamlessly redirected…
It can take a surprisingly long time until google is fully updated.
In reply to: Where do I edit blog post meta content?I’m not sure I understand you, but you may need to copy index.php file from /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/index.php to your child theme, ie: /wp-content/themes/default-child/index.php and edit it there.

https://codex.buddypress.org/extending-buddypress/changing-internal-configuration-settings/I haven’t tried it but https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/codestyling-localization/ should be buddypress compatible and might make things easier….
Although Poedit is quite easy to use
In reply to: Best Way to do a 301 RedirectFor a few individual pages you could just add redirect rules, a line per rule, to your .htaccess file – something like:
`
Redirect 301 /oldpage/ http://domain.com/newpage/
`The old page address is from the site root (the same as the htaccess file) the new address has to be from http://
The following discussion might be useful http://wordpress.stackexchange.com/questions/8665/how-to-301-redirect-category-to-customname
In reply to: Easy way to change colours?You shouldn’t have two files named style.css however you could rename the old style.css to old.css and import it into the buddypress child of bp default theme.
To create a child of bp-default theme, create a new directory in your themes subfolder ie: /wp-content/themes/shinshan/ and in it put a simple text file named style.css
At the very top of style.css put something like the following:
`/*
Theme Name: shinshan
Theme URI: http://example.org/themes/shinshan/
Description: shinshan theme for BuddyPress.
Version: 1.0
Author: shinshan
Author URI: http://example.org/
Template: bp-default
Tags: buddypress, two-column, grey, dark
*/`
You could copy and paste the css (without the Theme head section) from your old theme immediately below that header or use the following line:@import url( old.css );
(presuming the above file is renamed and in the current folder). Then preview or activate your new bp-default child theme.
I suspect that importing the css might cause more problems than it solves – but it depends on what you have in it….
To find out what needs to be changed, webpages can be examined with firebug (download) in firefox, or developer tools in internet exlorer 8/9 and Chrome (press f12 on windows)…
The last post on https://buddypress.org/community/groups/creating-extending/forum/topic/sign-up-email/ has another suggestion, using https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/mail-from/
Have you tried installing https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-mail-smtp/ then sending a test email from the settings page?
The debug information should indicate where the problem is and the error codes can be googled for further info if necessary….
In reply to: do not recieve confirmation emailSometimes emails end up in spam or junk directories/folders….
Some web-hosting providers might require you to install a wordpress plugin such as https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/mail-from/ and/or https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-mail-smtp/
wp-mail-smtp also has a useful debug feature and more settings…
In reply to: Home Page Fine: Others Error 404In reply to: Fatal Error multisite Define Blog_idIt’s not clear from the above code because you didn’t use `backticks` but…
Make sure you are using `’BP_ROOT_BLOG’` not `‘BP_ROOT_BLOG’`
ie before and after should be with`’` not `‘` or `’`In reply to: Activation mail not sending ,help needed.Are they in a spam or junk folder?
Have you tried installing https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-mail-smtp/ then use it to send a debug email? It can show where an email gets stuck and error codes that can be googled….
In reply to: hide admin profile from member list?In reply to: Child Style Not LoadingUm, I think you’ve used `‘cornerstone’` instead of `’cornerstone’` etc…
The orginal needed ‘backticks’ to stop it changing…..
In reply to: Filter for “Add friend” buttonYou don’t need to do the whole translation – just the word(s) etc, that you want. It is also used in a slug so that would need to be dealt with….
Another way is linked to in the above note but ‘friend’, and variations of it, appear in lots of places so translation might be better ….
Poedit does make the task easier and you don’t lose the language ‘edits’ when buddypress is upgraded….
In reply to: Members Only BuddyPressCouldn’t you use something like travel-junkie’s walled garden technique:
`
function sh_walled_garden()
{
global $bp;
if( bp_is_register_page() || bp_is_activation_page() || bp_is_page( BP_FORUMS_SLUG ) || bp_is_page( BP_GROUPS_SLUG ) )
return;if( ! bp_is_blog_page() && ! is_user_logged_in() )
bp_core_redirect( bp_get_signup_page() );
}
add_action( ‘bp_init’, ‘sh_walled_garden’ );
`
This goes in bp-custom.php and hides members and activity from those not logged in but enables forums and groups for everyone. It can also be customised…..In reply to: [Resolved] Change text in “Create an Account”In reply to: can’t add borders with css to anythingyes, most probably. But the active one should also be apparent in chrome.
You could try using `!important` ie
`
.your-class {
border:5px!important;
}
`
But it is better practice to try to improve the importance by including more of the css cascade ‘tree’, not just the last bit `.yourclass` (start at `#body` or `#wrapper` if necessary).
However if `!important` works then your are going along the right linesIt would help to know which parent theme you are using……
To find out what css to change, you can examine your web pages with firebug (download) in firefox or developer tools in internet explorer 8 or 9 and google chrome – it’s built in so just press F12. There are similar features in other browsers…
`display:none;` does what it says….
Just remove that line and it will come back again…. nothing else will have changed….
Actually going back to re-read your original message, it’s not clear what you want to do and how you expect to do it?
Chris Clayton also suggested an alternative line for your style.css file:
`
div#header { background-image:url(‘This-is-the-path-to-an-image-file.gif’); }
`The best way to deal with it is in a child theme! This is the way that buddypress is designed to work so that when buddypress / bp default get upgraded you won’t lose your edits…
Create a subdirectory under themes and create a simple text file called style.css inside the directory. Then add something like the following at the top of style.css:
`/*
Theme Name: nilssvz
Theme URI: http://example.org/themes/nilssvz/
Description: nilssvz theme for BuddyPress.
Version: 1.0
Author: nilssvz
Author URI: http://example.org/
Template: bp-default
Tags: buddypress, two-column, grey, dark
*/`Then put what Chris Clayton suggested immediately below:
`
div#header h1 { display:none; }
`and see what happens when you preview or activate your new child theme…..
In reply to: Filter for “Add friend” buttonVarying degrees of privacy can be setup, but if something goes wrong it could cause issues for visitors or even bring the site down….
Could you set up a sub domain and work on that? The files can then be copied and database duplicated…
Alternatively, set up your localhost with apache, php and mysql for development work?
In reply to: Activation Email Not Being SentSometimes emails end up filed as spam or junk….
