If your website email doesn’t work at all you may need an extra plugin. The codex suggests one here: https://codex.buddypress.org/troubleshooting/frequently-asked-questions/
I use https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-mail-smtp/ which has a useful debugging feature….
In reply to: Splash StartThings have changed since 18 months ago so it would be better to start a new topic.
If you are interested in the walled garden privacy technique then for a much more recent discussion have a look here
In reply to: Warning: Cannot modify header informationWhat is in /wp-content/themes/seneca-county/functions.php on line 2?
In reply to: Privacy????It works fine at my end so maybe there is a theme or plugin conflict…
replacing ‘wp_loaded’ with ‘bp_init’ also works for me…
In reply to: Privacy????what is line 10 of bp-custom.php?
What theme are you using?If you also want to allow non logged in visitors to view the members page (If that is what you meant) try replacing:
`
if( bp_is_register_page() || bp_is_activation_page() || bp_is_page( BP_FORUMS_SLUG ) || bp_is_page( BP_GROUPS_SLUG ) )
`
with
`
if( bp_is_register_page() || bp_is_activation_page() || bp_is_page( BP_FORUMS_SLUG ) || bp_is_page( BP_GROUPS_SLUG ) || bp_is_page( BP_MEMBERS_SLUG ) )
`In reply to: avatars changed to mysteryman after updateI discovered this issue myself earlier today and ( based on https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/1-5-group-avatars-using-mystery-man-default#post-109448 ) found that the following in bp-custom.php will change the default group and user avatar settings:
`
function my_avatar_defaults() {
global $bp;
// change ‘identicon’ to anything listed here:
// http://en.gravatar.com/site/implement/images/#default-image
$bp->grav_default->group = ‘identicon’;
$bp->grav_default->user = ‘monsterid’;
}
add_action( ‘bp_init’, ‘my_avatar_defaults’ );
`In reply to: Privacy????I have a page like http://www.example.com/contact-us/
If I change
`bp_core_redirect( bp_get_signup_page() );`
to
`bp_core_redirect( $bp->root_domain .’/’. ‘contact-us’ );`
it redirects to that page….I haven’t tried it with other types of permalink settings….
In reply to: Privacy????what was on line 1?
it should have been `<?php` with nothing before it.
The last line should probably be `?>` with nothing after it
In reply to: Privacy????I’m using the walled garden technique for some privacy and have adapted it for bp 1.5.* !
This is based on https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/members-privacy-how-can-i-hide-members-profiles?topic_page=2&num=15#post-102784 and needs to go in a bp-custom.php file…
`
function sh_walled_garden()
{
global $bp;
if( bp_is_register_page() || bp_is_activation_page() || bp_is_page( BP_FORUMS_SLUG ) || bp_is_page( BP_GROUPS_SLUG ) )
return;if( ! bp_is_blog_page() && ! is_user_logged_in() )
bp_core_redirect( bp_get_signup_page() );
}
add_action( ‘wp_loaded’, ‘sh_walled_garden’ );
`
Originally add action was to get_header but now the bp template loads the header first so I had to move it…Before that one had to put a hook into the page template header to load the function – not sure which would now be best or if that hook is ok to use (It’s the only one i found that worked)?
The above function hides members and activity from those not logged in but enables forums and groups for everyone – see variation here
In reply to: Privacy????Which plugins are you referring to and what sort of privacy are you looking for ?
Well I’ve just done it ( https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/5227 ) and the issue seems to be fixed!
Unfortunately it means changing the lines in the `/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-core/bp-core-catchuri.php` file
This edit will be overwritten when buddypress is upgraded, and buddypress may have further revisions to 1.5* before 1.6 (with the fix) hatches so take notes in case you have to re-do it!
Make sure you back everything up before trying the edit!
In reply to: After upgrade new members cannot sign up!Are the emails in the spam or junk directories?
Some hosts need an extra plugin to work with wordpress mail, such as the one suggested on the following page: https://codex.buddypress.org/troubleshooting/frequently-asked-questions/
I have used https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-mail-smtp/ which has a useful debugging feature….
In reply to: Not getting registration/activation emailIF wordpress isn’t sending any emails (ie they’re not in spam or junk folders) it may need an extra plugin – see https://codex.buddypress.org/troubleshooting/frequently-asked-questions/
Or try https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-mail-smtp/ to help diagnose where the issue is and add some extra settings to fix it…In reply to: Only default theme works with BuddyPress1.5 is going to be released…. – any day now ?
In reply to: Not receiving registration confirmation emailIf you have never received an email (and it’s not stuck in a spam or junk folder) then your web host may need an extra plugin to use email with WordPress.
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-mail-smtp/ ( http://www.callum-macdonald.com/code/wp-mail-smtp/ ) adds extra email settings to wordpress and has a tool to debug smtp / php mail. This plugin has previously been discussed: https://buddypress.org/?s=wp-mail-smtp ….
Alternatively the codex has another suggestion.
In reply to: Theme out of lineWhat theme are you using?
In reply to: Theme out of lineYou should start a new topic!
Some web hosts require extra configuration to work with wordpress email.
wp-mail-smtp also provides a testing mode to help debug php and smtp mail.
Previous discussions about it can be found by searching buddypress.org for WP-Mail-SMTP
In reply to: New User Verification EmailThe plugin is also needed for some shared hosting production servers…
I use both smtp and php mail locally, and on shared hosting.
If you can get php mail working properly on your testing server you may not need a plugin.
In reply to: New User Verification EmailWhat happens when you send a test email via the plugin’s test mode?
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-mail-smtp/ enables you to change various mail settings which are not available in the default wordpress.
If you are running apache as a localhost testing site then you need to set up mail in the php.ini file. It was so long ago I can’t remember what else…
Alternatively, if your ISP has smtp mail available then you can set things up via the plugin to talk directly to the ISP’s smtp mail – If you are using something like MS Outlook locally then check out your ISP’s recommended settings…
The Plugin’s test mode can provide vital feedback as to what is happening and what might need changing…
In reply to: How to change the avatar in the photo?It’s not clear what you mean! You can already change the buddypress avatar to your photo.
For Albums etc. look in the buddypress extend section: https://buddypress.org/extend/plugins/?search=photo
