I believe this is an outdated method. Is there a newer technique?
Awesome.
Has there been any more movement on this front?
Btw, I really didn’t mean to dig on *anyone* –> I think WP and BP is BRILL, to say the least, but I do get frustrated @ how spammy it all can be. THAT SAID, I should just keep my mouth shut from here on out (ha), since I’m not really contributing to the solution.
SO.
@foxly I still need to read through all your suggestions, but the few I did read seemed spot on.
I do think it’s important to note: this thread becomes documentation for would-be spammers. Sad to say, as @andrea_r has noted many a time, when it’s documented, the evil-doers will read it and then find a way around. So how does your solution work in spite of the documentation herein? Or do we need to take some of this offline, into a more hushed conversation, i.e., email (gasp!) or some other less porous document? Google docs?

Actually, figured out a much simpler and easier way to hook into what I need…little did I realize that the groups-loop.php and members-loop.php pages each had actions I could hook into –> right exactly where I needed them. Sharing here for the benefit of others, this is what I’ve loaded in functions.php in my child theme:
function load_directory_panel() {
locate_template(array(“directory-panel.php” ), true);
}
add_action(‘bp_after_directory_members_list’, ‘load_directory_panel’);
add_action(‘bp_after_groups_loop’, ‘load_directory_panel’);Doing something roughly like this, though I may break the groups/members panel pages out into separate pages for separate content. But that’s the gist of it. Yay!
Yow, I this is a very satisfying thread. I’ve been so frustrated in the past by cursory deflections from long-time WP gurus (I won’t name names, ha), when it’s been clear for a long time that WP (and now BP) has very weak defenses, and yet seems to have the type of community that could build something very robust and strong. That being said, I have also thought that BuddyPress, by it’s linked nature, provides a greater threshold for working on this type of problem. To use a buzzword, it’s “synergy.”
I’m glad somebody has finally taken up the mantle.
(Sorry for ranting for a moment there, but it’s true!)
If you want to actually hide it display:none does the trick. If you just want to set it to invisible there are various methods, including opacity:0, visibility:hidden, and text-indent:-9999px; all of which have cross-browser inconsistencies, I believe.
Brilliant! Found and served.

Now… how does one hook into that hook, if that makes any sense. In this case, for example, since the action is wp_ajax_members_filter, is there a way to tag on (hook) extra content loaded (of my own making) that will return in the response? Am I making sense?
In other words, on the members directory page, when the user clicks navigation, I’m trying to load extra info about each user, and “hook” it into the same ajax call, so that it’s relevant to the content being loaded. I might have an idea how to do it (hoping it can be done in my own functions.php page), but any pointers are also welcome. Glad this answer came so quickly, btw.
btw, I ended up using a js hack on this. Not ideal at all. I haven’t kept up to date on the way BP handles gravatars/avatars, though, so I’m curious what’s new on that front. Anyone?
10% (it might be less) makes not a majority. Actually, I’m kind of tired of the whole support ’em argument. Again, it’s a personal decision, but I’m done with IE6. Finis. End. Finale. Time to move on to more interesting things. I can see a need for it in some segments of consumerism, but I’m not in that market for the most part.
Actually, in a sense, I’m done with IE altogether, because the types of applications and platforms that interest me necessitate some rather advanced things, such as HTML5. That goes for JavaScript as well. Need it for my interests. Not interested in people who want to turn it off. (Though I do understand the accessibility argument on that front.)
Also: Google: look under the hood. It’s there. No need to read about it. Declared HTML5 doctype reads: <!doctype html> (Of course, their search engine homepage has other problems, imho, but who am I to critique The Goog.)
Glad to see it getting the respect it deserves from the prez.
Xevo, to your point, HTML5 is actually more cross-browser friendly than you think:
http://ejohn.org/blog/html5-doctype/
It’s true that some browsers (ahem, IE) are not fitted for this, but I’ve stopped supporting IE6 on a personal level, and IE7 has a shiv that fixes that. http://remysharp.com/2009/01/07/html5-enabling-script/ It’s true there are still problems with that (javascript turned off for example), http://remysharp.com/2009/01/07/html5-enabling-script/ but that shouldn’t stop some of the more adventurous. (Google’s home search page is now written with the HTML5 doctype — is that non-standard?)
On a personal level, I’ve decided the benefits outweigh the risks, so I’ve decided to start converting my site. I’ll check back in from time to time and tell everyone how it goes.
I’ve noticed that it updates from time to time if you try and run a build off of one of the tags. Is this because it’s pulled live via svn:externals?
Just out of curiosity, how’d it get in there in the first place? Just an oversight?
Just noticed that this is fixed on testbp.org –> and implemented *very* nicely.
MAJOR PROPS to the core development group for listening to and responding to concerns from the community. I think the solutions — the “mention this user” button instead of the other alternatives considered, and the @usermentions tab — are really, really good.
Also, the little help “?” drop down next to the profile identifier (the one that reads “@username is a unique identifier for User that you can type into any message on this site…”) is also a great idea and a wonder.

PROPS AND KUDOS! Seriously. Great job.
What is the ratings plugin you’re using?
ha ha ha YES
Oh. @Andrea_r –> any way you could point me to that particular Mike Pratt thread?
I was having major problems w/ sploggers. The link Chouf1 mentioned totally stopped ’em dead in their tracks. I think I’ve only had one splogger since, and it was a real person just typing it in somewhere in Thailand, trying to up their SEO ranking or something weird like that. :p
Dig the theme. Nice work.
@andrea_r i was wondering this. that is BRILL.
One might say an @mention tab could/would perform a search results set, that is, one has searched for @individual, and this is the results. Such a tab, then, would be a quick link/button to this exact set result.
@twocents :p
OH GOL. It just clicked. I get it. It’s not *THEIR PROFILE* — it’s *THEIR ACTIVITY* —
Okay, this makes sense. So, it is what it is, I guess. You wouldn’t *post* to somebody else’s activity.
IT’S NOT FACEBOOK, for sure, I get it now. And (changing tune sorta here), I might even think it’s a better model.
HOWEVER, that being said, I think there will be a lot of people *still frustrated* at such a feature seemingly being missing…”why can’t I post to this person’s profile???” I still think there ought to be an approach to this that approximates closely enough what Facebook is doing without compromising the social-stack friendly and perhaps better-than-Facebook model of activity streams.
</quickly pulls foot out of mouth>
Btw, I agree w/ much of what else has been suggested.
You guys are all off topic and I’m going to steer it back to ground one. :p
I see the point about @messages *not* showing up on other peeps profile pages, it makes sense *IN SOME SCENARIOS.*
However, I know an awful lot of people who LIKE the Facebook feature of posting on a person’s wall and having it show up.
I understand the wire has been gutter, deleted, deprecated, *AND I LIKE THAT* and I also like that the activity streams are unifying the action.
BUT I STILL THINK THERE OUGHT TO BE A WAY TO POST TO A PERSON’S PROFILE PAGE. I suppose someone (me?) could build a plugin, but why can’t this be native functionality? One might even have the option in the admin panel to turn such a feature on or off.
Why is the core team resisting this feature? Do you ever use Facebook? Most people I know who use Facebook *really like this feature,* and I can imagine many people getting frustrated @buddypress w/ the lack of such a thing.
