I’m having this problem too. Is there a fix that I can make to the core files to address this before 1.1 is released?

Figured it out. It was affecting items that were displaying comments on a post that had “100%” in it, and the “%” was causing the issue.

    I’ll submit a bug report.

So you can see what’s going on, here’s an unstyled chunk of the feed that shows an item correctly displayed, but then an unattributed quote, a join (that displays properly) then another unattributed quote.

Dana, yes I have been having problems with avatars for groups, I’ll select some images and send them to you, thanks for the offer!

Daniel – yes I’ve heard Borders are open to that sort of event, sounds interesting, I’ll check out your link. Versatility definitely important in a poet.

To clarify things in my mind, can you (Jeff, or anyone else) explain the implications of moving to BP parent/child themes for sites that do not currently use a bphome theme?

Will it still be an option to use any WP blog theme (with BP widgets) for “home” in conjunction with the BP (child) member theme? Or will the “home” theme also have to be a child of the BP parent theme?

And how would that even work, if the “home” theme (i.e. a good old fashioned blog theme) potentially has its very own parent theme? Can a child theme have two parents? Or is this completely irrelevant because the “home” theme stands on its own since it’s not relying on any BP hooks if it’s strictly using widgets?

Please excuse my ignorance of WP parent/child themes. I wasn’t even aware of them until a few days ago.

@crackpixels We’re not using a BP home theme since we’re trying to balance the e-zine content with the social networking piece. Instead I customized a standard WP theme (Atahualpa) and added the BP widgets into the sidebars.

Thanks to both of you guys.

It seemed likely to me that XMLRPC (in conjunction with the realities of our hosting setup) was the bottleneck, since everything else seemed to be snappy, even under the presumed load of the shared server. After I posted my original message, I went over to trac and saw that the forums component was completely recoded, so I’m hopeful.

I definitely want to get us off of the shared box soon, regardless of whether or not this issue goes away with 1.0.4.

The way you compete with an established player is to offer content (and not just functionality) that they don’t have. You and I might agree that Ning is lacking, but it’s good enough for a lot of people to stick around, so it might be worth pitching the site in a different way other than focusing on the “whiz-bang.”

With a narrowly-focused subject like yours, it might be better to directly engage with groups active in that topic/space. Since your site has an academic bent, it would be good to talk with programs and/or publications that serve that audience, including subject-specific blogs that you can potentially cross-promote with (have you tried pitching to the editors of gaming sites?). Don’t be afraid to “cold call.” :)

My current side project (http://readwritepoem.org) has an academic component too and so far we’ve only communicated that we relaunched the site as an “online magazine / social network” (sometimes specificity is lost on people, so don’t bother mention BP immediately) to a few key folks and we now have a number of interviews lined up with journals and an academic publication (we got that one through a generous Twitter contact). We’re hoping that’ll steamroll into more publicity which should help fuel the viral buzz.

This iteration of the site (with the addition of BuddyPress) is a week-and-a-half old and our members are already putting the BP functionality through the paces.
