    I don’t know how to make this work on Windows. It’s not really a BuddyPress problem – I’m guessing that a normal WP installation won’t work either, if you turn on pretty permalinks. Have a look at https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks#Permalinks_without_mod_rewrite

    And, for what it’s worth, the idea of a “component” is not one with clear demarcations. Both you and @modemlooper suggest some useful criteria:
    – if your plugin creates new data objects, it’s probably a component
    – if your plugin needs to have a top-level directory, it’s probably a component (and, in this case, a special kind of component called a “root” component.

    In BP 1.5, the idea of a “component” has a little bit more technical fleshing-out due to the BP_Component base class. A quick look at that class and its more important methods (setup_globals(), setup_nav()) will give you sense of when it’s useful to think of a plugin as a component. But again, there are no hard-and-fast rules.

    In general, when in doubt, I would suggest using the BP_Component class. Sometimes your component won’t need some parts of the component infrastructure – sounds to me like your “up vote” plugin doesn’t need dedicated navigation items, for instance – but in that case, you can just leave those methods out. Using the BP_Component class just makes your life a bit easier by hooking you into the BP load order in the appropriate places.

    The 1.5-compatible version of the skeleton component (BPSC 1.6 – sorry for the confusing version numbers, just a bad coincidence) will be out soon, hopefully today. Until then, use the version from Github.

    I should note that the new skeleton component is not backward compatible, as it uses the new BP_Component class. If you need to maintain 1.2.x compatibility with your plugin, use the old Skeleton Component.

    I think the problem is that you’re using `$bp->groups->slug` as the parent_slug. You should be using bp_get_current_group_slug().

    This change affects you because you’re adding items directly to the group nav, rather than using BP_Group_Extension. Read more about the change: http://bpdevel.wordpress.com/2011/09/05/manually-modifying-single-group-navigation-in-bp-1-5/

    I may have stumbled upon the problem. It appears only to be happening on the non-root-blog. Follow https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/3622#comment:3 for details.

    Are you, by chance, using SharDB or MultiDB?

    Following up on @frenx4u, is your theme a child theme of bp-default, or did you adapt it for BP use with the BuddyPress Template Pack? If the latter, you will probably have to do what frenx4u suggests.

    Good catch. I’ve opened a bug ticket: https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/3619

    OK, sure. You should be able to drop this in your theme’s functions.php.

    `if ( !function_exists( ‘bp_dtheme_enqueue_scripts’ ) ) :
    /**
    * Enqueue theme javascript safely
    *
    * @see https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/wp_enqueue_script
    * @since 1.5
    */
    function bp_dtheme_enqueue_scripts() {
    // Bump this when changes are made to bust cache
    $version = ‘20110921’;

    // Enqueue the global JS – Ajax will not work without it
    wp_enqueue_script( ‘dtheme-ajax-js’, WP_PLUGINS_DIR . ‘/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/_inc/global.js’, array( ‘jquery’ ), $version );

    // Add words that we need to use in JS to the end of the page so they can be translated and still used.
    $params = array(
    ‘my_favs’ => __( ‘My Favorites’, ‘buddypress’ ),
    ‘accepted’ => __( ‘Accepted’, ‘buddypress’ ),
    ‘rejected’ => __( ‘Rejected’, ‘buddypress’ ),
    ‘show_all_comments’ => __( ‘Show all comments for this thread’, ‘buddypress’ ),
    ‘show_all’ => __( ‘Show all’, ‘buddypress’ ),
    ‘comments’ => __( ‘comments’, ‘buddypress’ ),
    ‘close’ => __( ‘Close’, ‘buddypress’ ),
    ‘view’ => __( ‘View’, ‘buddypress’ )
    );

    wp_localize_script( ‘dtheme-ajax-js’, ‘BP_DTheme’, $params );
    }
    add_action( ‘wp_enqueue_scripts’, ‘bp_dtheme_enqueue_scripts’ );
    endif;
    `

    On testbp.org, we have disabled activity comments on activity items corresponding to forum posts and blog posts. The reason is because we want to avoid confusion about the distinction between activity streams and forums/blog post responses.

    Make sure that the following setting is checked:
    Dashboard > BuddyPress > Settings > “Disable activity stream commenting on blog and forum posts?”

    I just left a comment telling you how to do it on your wordpress.org post :)

    Sounds like it might be a bug. Could you open a ticket at http://trac.buddypress.org? Use the same credentials you use on this site.

    > But, the ‘activity/post’ page is still missing, so users can’t post status updates.

    Does this mean that there is no page when you go to http;//example.com/activity? Have you activated the Activity component? Or do you mean that there is no form for users to enter activity updates on the existing page?

    @boonebgorges

    @seluvega Make sure that you have activated a theme other than BuddyPress Default on the main site.

    It looks like you haven’t set up your permalinks correctly, or that there is a problem with your .htaccess.

    Go to Dashboard > Settings > Permalinks. Make sure that you have chosen an option other than the first option, and click Save. (Save your settings even if you don’t change them – just saving them can trigger things to work.)

    If the site links still don’t work, check in the root of your WP installation for a hidden file called .htaccess. Is it there? What are its contents?

    Do you happen to know what operating system your server is running?

    BuddyPress is a “network only” plugin. That means that you can only “network activate” it. But, the way BP works, you generally only show BP content on a single one of your blogs – we call that the “root blog”. By default, it is blog number 1, the main blog in your network. For this to work, just activate a BP-compatible theme (like BuddyPress Default).

    If you want your community/BP content to be on a blog other than the main blog, you’ll have to define an alternative root blog. In wp-config.php:
    `define( ‘BP_ROOT_BLOG’, 6 );`
    where you replace ‘6’ with the id of your desired root blog.

    This is a good idea for a feature enhancement. I encourage you to open a ticket, requesting that these slugs be customizable. http://trac.buddypress.org

    Have you gone through the BuddyPress setup wizard? When you go to Dashboard > BuddyPress > Pages, is there a page associated with Members?

    Very strange. Can you check your file permissions, to make sure that the web server can read the contents of bp-core?

    Very strange. Is *any* of the javascript on your BP 1.5 installation working? Places to check: requesting friendships/group memberships from directories; replying to private messages; the “read more” link that appears when you have a very long forum post.

    @boonebgorges

    Keymaster

    I was pretty confused after your first post, because I knew that BP has never done this, but I see now in your second post that you were always doing it yourself with custom code :)

    What are you trying to do with $bp_path? BP doesn’t use this during its initialization routine anymore, so that could be part of your problem.

    It’s difficult to troubleshoot any issues without access to your site. Things to check:
    – is global.js being loaded in your document’s head?
    – when you open a javascript console (like in Firebug), do you get any errors when you try clicking on things?
    – is Javascript enabled in your browser?

    In reply to: buddypress 1.5 issues.

    It sounds like BuddyPress’s javascript is not loading properly in your browser. Do you have javascript enabled? Can you give more details on the browser you are using? Can you try with another browser or from another computer?
