    @foxly Thanks so much for the kind words! Means a lot coming from a seasoned dev like yourself. Looking forward to seeing you in the dev chat!

    Go to Dashboard > BuddyPress > Components. Do you have the blogs component turned on? (And, just to double check, are you running Multisite?)

    Hee hee. OK. I wish that I could guarantee that BP will work on even the wackiest setup, but the fact is that you may have so many rewrite rules, canonical URLs, and other gobbledygook in your installation, that it’ll just be impossible to get working right. Thanks for you patience, anyway :)

    `I’m going with ‘My install is bollixed’`

    Could well be, though it’d be helpful to know what bollixed it, as that might give us a sense as to whether BP could work around the bollixing.

    Your ‘activity’ renaming issue: Does that happen when you rename the pages corresponding to *other* components, eg groups or members? How about the weird redirect thing?

    When you corrected the permissions thing, did you chmod with the -R flag, to make sure that the changes were made all the way through the buddypress file tree?

    @boonebgorges

    Keymaster

    `/activity and individual profiles redirect.`

    This sounds like a theme issue. Maybe you missed some theme files when you copied them over manually? Does switching back to bp-default solve it?

    `Renamed the activity page from Activity to ‘What’s New’ (slug ‘news’) – This actually had NO effect. Didn’t rename bupkis and the /news page just died.`

    What do you mean it didn’t rename bupkis? Did WP properly save your changes? What do you mean the /news page “died” – white screen, 404, or what? Did you have a previously existing page called ‘news’ (your suggestion that the page “just died” suggests that you did)?

    Very, very strange. 644 is the standard. Never seen this. Let me know if you figure it out – I doubt it’s BP’s fault (we don’t do any chmodding!!) but nothing’s impossible.

    (The more I think about it, the more I think that something funky must be happening with your server, especially if an installation that *was* working is now *not* working.)

    This is a really peculiar error. I’ve never seen require() fail because of a permissions error before.

    When you check the detailed directory listing for buddypress/bp-core, do you see anything unusual?
    `cd wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-core
    ls -la`

    @intermike Just overwrite the files in the plugins/buddypress folder with the new ones! Though it’s far easier if your dev environment is on an svn checkout.

    Invite Anyone 1.0.1 is confirmed working with BP 1.2.9 and BP 1.5
    BuddyPress Docs works with BP 1.2.9 and BP 1.5

    Hey @modemlooper, I juts posted a patch to that ticket. Would you mind installing it and then walking through an upgrade again? I think that the patch fixes the biggest part of the problem (did for me with Achievements, anyway).

    I’ll work on providing a document with best practices for creating them. See https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/3422 for further discussion of the page creation problem.

    Paul’s a bit wrong. We did have to make *some* changes to the BP_Group_Extension class, or at least to the load order in bp_register_group_extension(). I spent a pretty large amount of time trying to figure this out for my own plugin development, so it should be working, but please do let us know if something seems amiss.

    Try this:
    `function remove_xprofile_links() {
    remove_filter( ‘bp_get_the_profile_field_value’, ‘xprofile_filter_link_profile_data’, 9, 2 );
    }
    add_action( ‘bp_init’, ‘remove_xprofile_links’ );`

    @pisanojm The BP_Activity_Template::__construct() problem has been fixed in the trunk; see https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/3421 Thanks for the report.

    @imjscn You should be prompted to run the wizard in a yellow message across the top of the Dashboard (or Network Admin, on Multisite). Or, underneath the Dashboard > BuddyPress menu, you should see a Setup button.

    @jim-morrison What version of WP?

    @boonebgorges

    Keymaster

    @virtuali Blog comments only show up in the activity stream if you have Multisite enabled. This is how it’s always worked.

    The option to select the default avatar is in the default WP location, Dashboard > Settings > Discussion.

    When you activate a BuddyPress-compatible theme, like BuddyPress Default, you will see a Members tab at the top of the screen. That is the public Members Directory, where users can browse or search.

    `So no plugins to be able to invite people other than the not working one which says when trying to install that it has not been tested yet for my version of WP?`

    There is a plugin called Invite Anyone that provides several for group and site invitations: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/invite-anyone/ It is compatible with the latest WP and BP. The only reason it doesn’t list its compatibility in the WP repo is because WP requires me to release a new version of the plugin in order to update its compatibility, and I have no good reason to do this. Without Invite Anyone, group members can only invite Friends to the group.

    Svn up your installation. This was a bug introduced yesterday, which has been fixed in the trunk.

    I’d rather not be forced to use my Twitter login for WP authentication. It’s nice when it’s an option, but to force it might raise privacy concerns, among other things. I would prefer to have the option at registration: use a Twitter login for authentication and get my Twitter account synced automatically, or create a standalone WP login, which can later be linked to my Twitter account if I so wish. (This has the added bonus of allowing me to associate with a different Twitter account at a later date if I want to change.)

    I recently set up a site for baby pictures, and managed to give users the choice between FB login and a dedicated WP login. Maybe it’d be helpful? http://teleogistic.net/2011/07/building-a-baby-photo-site-with-wordpress/

    What other plugins do you have installed?

    WP/BP versions?

    Do you have forums, groups, and activity turned on at Dashboard >BuddyPress > Component Setup?

    What @mercime means is that several of your questions are dependent on the theme you’ve purchased, ‘executive’. WPMU.org is not the official WordPress site, but is a private company that sells themes and plugins. It’s not possible for people on this free forum to provide support for a theme that is sold privately; you should go to wpmu.org for that.

    General BuddyPress questions are welcome here, though. For instance,
    `Furthermore I don’t seem to have a members directory in my dashboard.`
    BuddyPress does not add a members directory to your Dashboard. You can find a members list at Dashboard > Users (or Dashboard >Network Admin > Users on Multisite)

    Hi Andrea,

    Maybe not the most straightforward method, but a loop roughly like this would do it:
    `if ( bp_group_has_members( array( ‘group_id’ => $group_x_id, ‘per_page’ => 100000 ) ) ) {
    while ( bp_group_members() ) {
    bp_group_the_member();

    $user_id = bp_get_group_member_id();

    // Don’t do this if the user is already a member
    if ( groups_is_user_member( $user_id, $group_y_id ) ) {

    $new_member = new BP_Groups_Member;
    $new_member->group_id = $group_y_id;
    $new_member->user_id = $user_id;
    $new_member->inviter_id = 0;
    $new_member->is_admin = 0;
    $new_member->user_title = ”;
    $new_member->date_modified = bp_core_current_time();
    $new_member->is_confirmed = 1;

    $new_member->save();

    groups_update_groupmeta( $group_y_id, ‘total_member_count’, (int) groups_get_groupmeta( $group_y_id, ‘total_member_count’) + 1 );
    }
    }
    }`

    I haven’t tested that, but something very much like it should work.

    In BP 1.3, this is all handled quite nicely in the core! Coming soon.

    What is your permalink setting? Dashboard > Settings > Permalinks

    I use MAMP on my own machine, but I don’t use the default settings. I wrote a post about it some time ago, where you can read more about how I configure it: http://teleogistic.net/2010/05/setting-up-a-wordpressbuddypress-development-environment-on-os-x/ In particular, you might be having a problem related to your hosts file, or maybe the Apache port settings. (I’m stabbing in the dark a bit here :) )
