In reply to: Joinless groups?
Very good suggestions.. I would like to have a few of those myself.. For instance a forum/group for Help and Support which is active as a group but not listed in the user’s group page.. This to keep global/sitewide forums/groups seperate from groups the users joins out of interest (for example: Baseball)
In reply to: http://suicidemachine.orgHaha awesome I like it!
In reply to: GalleryI think most of us here would say BP is miles better, but like all things in life that’s strictly personal. Personally the only alternative to bp is socialengine but that script expensive and has a bad community and a price tag on everything from support to themes and plugins.. I’d stay with BP
In reply to: Friends and Groups for BuddyPress 1.3Thanks for further explaining yourself JJJ, and I like the general concept behind a lot.. But the idea that speaks to me the most is making BuddyPress in general more flexible and not “hook” into the group API but make a new one based on that which can not only be used for groups but also for users (and thus friends options).
The idea to make a general API which can be hooked in by the Core components and 3rd Party plugins seems to me the best solution. If you take the group API for example and use it’s functions for individual users:
– Add extra signup pages/fields
– Add new pages
– Add new navigational items etc
All these things are possible with the Group API but take lots of work with a regular profile. Like MrMaz said you could break these functions into smaller parts which can be called upon and extended upon for Groups, Users, Friends and the Activity stream.
The amount of possibilities for new plugins would be endless
Once again I’m no programmer and this is coming from as a site admin/BP enthousiast/”Copy and Paste and pray to god I don’t get a white screen of death” kinda guy..edit: I would also like to say that Mike perfectly summorized my exact ideas of what a group should be and what a group of friends means. Well spoken. I’m getting a Deja Vu here lol
In reply to: Friends and Groups for BuddyPress 1.3@Peter a lot of social networks could benefit from a forum for a more centralized discussion, especially larger sites.. Forums should not be the main focus but certainly not forgotten or “dropped”. Especially since it works pretty well and intuitive after you’ve grasped the concept of the group/forum connection.
In reply to: New BP Chat plugin for BuddypressThere is also CometChat.. paid but supposed to be very good. might tell them you’re interested in this topic, so they start working on BP Integration.. it should not be very hard to make according to them:

If you want something more fancy check out this post:
In reply to: Video Sharing in Site Wide ActivityMrMaz his BP-Links plugin has automatic rich media detection and does exactly what’s needed.. maybe he could use his code to make it work in the activity stream. He told me that he would look at it as soon a BP 1.2 releases

edit: LOL.. He already posted here.. hihi
In reply to: Friends and Groups for BuddyPress 1.3Mysterious Jeff.. Do we have a saboteur on our hands here? Maybe a NING user who felt the breath of BP breathing down it’s neck? Anyways your suggestion is exactly what we need and kudos for bringing this up 10 months ago
In reply to: Friends and Groups for BuddyPress 1.3Most important thing for me would be the option to categorize your friends and filter the activity stream based on those categories..Looks like all types of sites could benefit from this, at least I haven’t seen people who were against that feature
In reply to: Who understands deviantart? If you’d read the post properly Modemlooper you would see that Xevo is making the exact same point you were making.. No point in copying something exactly and trying to target the exact same market as the big bad competition. It’s much better to focus on a specific subgroup of that huge pile of users..
He’s not saying; don’t try.. he’s saying; try, but don’t copy and target a specific subgroup of the big bad competition and see where it goes
In reply to: GalleryI totally disagree with you there Peter.. Let 3rd party developers spend time on creating awesome functionalities for our BuddyPress sites which are fully integrated with BPs functions, so we should not have to revert to external scripts and “hacks”.
In reply to: Making Buddypress a Social Network for non-bloggers?@Designodyssey: some creative thinking going on here! I’m interested if you can find a hack/solution to let users or groups easily create group blog post without the need to visit the WP admin panel and with the basic post functionality (wysiwyg editor etc) Keep up updated
In reply to: Gallery@Vincole: Check out BBPress, this site uses it also and it can be integrated into your BuddyPress site (takes some work though)
In reply to: GalleryIt’s not yet released and you have become a member of BuddyDev which is like 30$ a month.. If you look at the features and support given by Brajesh (the developer) I think that’s more then reasonable. You have to ask him about GPL and a demo. I’ll point him to this thread!
In reply to: GalleryBp Gallery: The ultimate photo gallery for your BuddyPress powered site
Should be out any day now and looks very promising!
In reply to: test 1.2whahahhaha “If I am your first rabbit”. That line cracked me up. I want some of the stuff you’re smoking and then I would probably be able to help you out with whatever issue you seem to be having with BP!
In reply to: Soon to release bp group control pluginThanks for your reply and now that you’ve explained it better it sounds like an even better idea. My “group categories” functionality is not currently available in BP, but I think it won’t be long before someone creates something like this. I might ask someone to develop it for me (paid ofcourse), because I would like to see such a feature on my site. Looking forward to your plugin!
In reply to: Making Buddypress a Social Network for non-bloggers?There is also a solution for that.. It’s called Community blogs: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-community-blogs/
From the plugin description:
By activating the Community Blogs plugin, Administrators can give immediate registered user status to any member of their BuddyPress enabled site on the blogs they choose. All the member has to do is visit the blog. The user is silently added as a registered user of that blog. Administrators can choose the role the new user has. Either Contributor or Author. Admins can give access to all users or users from specific BuddyPress groups.
As soon as a (registered) users visit the Blog (in your case Community Voice page) it automatically gets added as an author and is allowed to post! Great huh?
In reply to: Making Buddypress a Social Network for non-bloggers?Just insert the raw html or video embed code into your homepage template. If your using default BP theme you can put it in wp-content/themes/bp-default/home.php
In reply to: Who understands deviantart?Hi Neverhurry,
Deviantart has been around for years and is the #1 art/creative resource on the internet. It has been in development for many many years and as far as I know it has been custom built from the ground up. The site has thousands and thousands of users and so the people behind the site have enough resources (read: money) to make an incredible site, so it would take you a lot of time and money to achieve something like deviantart. I won’t say it’s impossible with WPMU+BP but it would require a LOT of work.
In reply to: Donations on BP.org, what do you think?I think that would be a very good idea Andy.. It would mean a more centralized way to discuss plugins and with the latest plugin release Group Documents: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-group-documents/ you can even offer the plugins for download. Looking forward to it!
In reply to: Soon to release bp group control pluginInteresting concept and I think this could come in handy for my project.. Basically I will have two kinds of groups: discussions groups and charity groups. I need to find a way to separate these groups and allow them to have different functions, but I would use the features described above for my charity groups for sure. I only have one question;
Can normal users still join a group in the regular way ? Or does it mean that group leaders can only assign users to the group and normal users can’t join? It would be ideal if some users could get the “role” you described (with group name for their username) and that normal users could become members as well..
I sure like the idea!
In reply to: Friends and Groups for BuddyPress 1.3@Teebes: you can already do what you want with auto group join: http://brentandmary.net/2009/10/24/bn-auto-join-group-plugin/
I’m planning to do the same for my site. Based on certain profile fields they are put in different groups after signup!
The buddypress themes should be place in the normal WP theme folder:
wp-content/themes
Upload bp-sn-parent and bp-default to the theme folder and activate the bp-default theme
