@bphelp, Wow and thank you for the awesome tutorial. This is perfect! I was actually using the original site I put up as a tempsite until I had the whole Buddy Press and bbpress thing figured out. I am in the process now of building our new site which will up be and running shortly.
The information you sent me is great. The register and…[Read more]

@bphelp Premium, not my cup of tea. I’m tackling the topic so throttling can be a feature in Buddypress itself (core feature), not simply as a plugin.

I have installed BP-Spamkiller though I haven’t made the community private. I’m still considering if that might be appropriate for me.
One issue I have is there is a link on my homepage to the ‘Spam-prevention’ page. I don’t think that should be there. Would this still work if I didn’t make that page public or I made…[Read more]

The problem is I need to modify the core files and add a plugin at the same time so a user can change the Throttling settings in his WordPress backend.
I really tried to simple write a plugin and skip the core files modifications, but it’s just not working out. Maybe you can help out here, I will post the 3 core file functions which I modified as…[Read more]

@bphelp thanks, I’ll take a look at that plugin but it lacks this specific functionality as you already mentioned
@shanebp how is this ‘too complicated’? I also like using the community to flag spam but that only finds spam after the fact, what if you could ID spammers *before*? wouldn’t that be even more valuable? or why not both?

Thanks for your help and your reply @BPhelp.
I think your suggested solution is perhaps a wee bit too technical for me. Is there a Pluggin that would suffice?
BP Spam killer is not available as a WP Pluggin. I’ve searched WP’s pluggins using many variants of the spelling/arranging of the term BP Spam killer.
I’m not at all clear of the…[Read more]

@bphelp thanks Ben for the heads up.
@sooskriszta
You are right about the use case. It is not suitable for spammers protection and neither suitable for normal sites.I built it specifically for membership based sites where they wanted to limit the no. of friends and charge for increasing the limit(I had got that specific requirement from a client…[Read more]

Thanks @bphelp
The plugin seems like a terrible idea. I mean some particular installation somewhere in the BuddyPress world might need it, but I don’t like the idea of limiting BP’s functionality (potentially thwarting the value of the online community) for everyone to try and stop a few bad apples. What number will you limit the friends to so…[Read more]

@bphelp Are you referring to this one? https://wordpress.org/plugins/buddypress-activity-privacy/
The description says
The plugin add the ability for members to choose who can read his activity before it posted (Anyone, Logged In Users, My Friends, Admins Only, Only me, My Friends in Group , Group Members …etc).

@bphelp I think you aren’t giving the developers enough credit. Version releases have been accelerating
1.2 to 1.5 took 20 months
1.5 to 1.6 took 11 months
1.6 to 1.7 took 8 monthsTrac can be deceptive, but based on current roadmap https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/roadmap 32% of 1.8 is completed and 1.8 is due in July (7 weeks from now).…[Read more]

@bphelp haha!
you’re right i suppose, it does depend a lot on the plugin. After all, a plugin can be a few lines of code in a single file or a huge folder full of badly written buggy spaghetti code.
I’m trying to get this to work purely for my own satisfaction now as I had it working at some point in the past.

@bphelp thanks for sharing the link.
I’ve come across that thread before. Unfortunately the solution no longer works. Perhaps it did work at some point in the past but not with today’s version of the plugin and BP 1.7.
