    You could just add some CSS to hide that tab in your child-themes style sheet:

    #user-settings {
        display: none;
    }

    Also, this thread is almost 2 1/2 years old. Its in bad form to reply to old threads. Start a new thread if the tip I gave you does not meet your requirement. The code that worked 2 1/2 years ago probably won’t work without changes.

    Hi Hugo! Yes the plugin was listed at the top of the plugins page here for many months. You are precise that the plugin was not BP related. The author had tagged it buddypress in the readme.txt and any time a BP relatated plugin author would release a legitimate new release plugin, then the author of AtContent would manipulate the plugins readme.txt in the SVN without any legitimate change to the plugin in an effort to stay at the top of the list on this site which was pushing down legitimate BP plugin releases and making it harder for users to find new legitimate BP plugin releases. I know the plugins are not hosted here but I found that practice to be a little unethical. I have had some correspondence with the author and apparently he has decided to do the right thing by removing the buddypress tag from the readme.txt, now the only way it shows up on here is if you do a search:
    https://buddypress.org/extend/plugins/?ps=AtContent
    I suppose this could be marked as resolved if you would like. Thanks! @hnla @johnjamesjacoby

    Matter of fact the change was made 7 to 8 minutes before my last post above. The link below will reflect that fact. Thanks again sir!

    Hi John!
    I just noticed the plugin author somehow manipulated the placement of the plugin obviously because I politely asked them to refrain from this. I hope I am not speaking out of place but this author has consistently updated their readme.txt in an effort to have the top spot on the plugins page. I had to request more than once for this to stop because I don’t believe it is supposed to be a ranking on how many downloads you have, but instead about new or updated legitimate plugin releases. If you look at the reviews I was not the only one that addressed this practice. If I am wrong on this, then I stand corrected. I just think that type of practice is unethical and makes users re-download a plugin that has no legitimate update because they may have seen it at the top, and failed to see the plugin versions and change-log hadn’t changed. Hence the author gets a lot of downloads without legitimate updates but the actual number of downloads does not accurately reflect how many users are actually using that plugin because of the readme.txt file manipulation. Thank you for looking over this John! Here is a link to where the plugin resides now:

    You could use some code and adjust it for your requirement. You could try using a similar approached as I used in this code but it is up to you to research how to adjust it:

    Thank you, I will try that out. I will be gone for vacation for 4 days or so but I will try it out when things are back to normal. Thanks again! 🙂

    Did you follow my instructions? Changing the plugin folder name to something different should disable the faulty plugin. Are you certain that particular plugin was the one that brought your site down? It may be another plugin. You can use the same instruction I provided for all other plugins as well. If your logged into your server go to /your-site/wp-content/plugins and append the double X to the other plugins names which will render them deactivated. Then re-activate each one individually until you find the faulty one. This also works if you append bp-custom.php with the double X. If You have custom functions in your themes folder you can create a new one and append the old one with the method above. It may be a theme issue as well, so right now I am just speculating.

    Is there any tutorials about contributing to the codex? I tried adding a snippet to Tips-Tricks-Code Snippets and after 7 revisions I failed miserably! 🙁
    My php code was stripped out every single time so I guest I need some instruction because I would like to give back to the community by helping on the codex but if it is this hard then maybe I should steer clear because I don’t want to clutter it up with revisions to nothing and misinformation because my code was stripped away. Thanks everyone! 🙂

    Unfortunately I will have decline that offer based on the info you supplied above. No offense, it is just not anything I would want to be affiliated with so I hope you can understand respectfully. Like I stated before it is most likely above my skill level anyhow. 🙂

    In all honesty that sounds a bit over my head and skill level but I would love to see if an experience Developer can help you resolve this. I will keep watch, and good luck! 🙂

    I posted this topic in miscellaneous so I don’t know why it shows up in installing buddypress. Sorry guys, I don’t know what caused it.

    Easy fix so don’t panic. Go into your server and rename that plugin. I always append it with 2 capital X’s to the beginning of the plugin name which will deactivate the plugin it can be anything it is just a habit for me.
    In your example change the folder containing the plugins name from:
    buddypress-xprofile-custom-fields-type
    TO:
    XXbuddypress-xprofile-custom-fields-type
    You can then get back into your site and the plugin will be deactivated and you can delete it via the dashboard if you choose.

    Doesn’t your theme contain a footer.php? If it does and it is not widgetized then you will have to manually widgetize it. Do a google search, there is lots of instructional info about widgetizing areas in themes.

    Hi there, If your using bp-default theme then the footer is widgetized in four areas so you should be able to ad adsense code there. If your using a different theme then you will have to check if the footer area is widgetized. If it is not then it is still possible with some coding.

    Furthermore BP is not a “broken or sold script” if you have paid for this software then you have been had by unscrupulous people. BP has bugs as any software including premium software has and the Development team does their best to resolve these bugs. Have you even searched the open trac tickets, or opened a new trac ticket if you have found a new bug? If you haven’t then you have given away your right to complain because your not reporting bugs which is highly encouraged by the community and by the Development team. As far as you writing an article trying to slander BuddyPress and convince people it is not legitimate, then I am afraid It just makes you look incompetent because you failed to follow pretty standard practices. @hnla @mercime I think this thread is not conducive to anything constructive at this point unless you would like to chime in of course, I request this topic be locked.

    When you say selectively can you be more specific? Do you mean having a dashboard setting for switching between the options that you as the admin choose for your users, or do you mean having two different types of activity streams that a user can click on: Link 1.) Shows sitewide activity stream
    Link 2.) Shows only you and your friends activity stream?
    I am a bit flustered by your requirement, sorry!

    I don’t have to prove anything to you I am trying to assist you. I am not the one complaining because your not using the advice given. I have had many BuddyPress sites ranging from BP 1.2 through 1.7.2 and it works great. The problem is when you have a fresh install of WP and BP then every time you install and activate a new plugin then test it against your registration. I am sorry if this sounds tedious and insensitive but I do not feel sorry for users who use out of date plugins and install 30 to 40 plugins without testing against registration only to find in the thick of it all one of those plugins conflicted with the registration and then they have to back peddle to find what they would have found if they had tested each plugin as they activated it against the registration. That is not very responsible, so do your part because the Development team can only do but so much.

    Supply me with a link to the bp follow plugin and I will look at it and see how it implements the new scope via a plugin and I will see what I can do. You really need to look at that plugins add_actions or add_filters as it should supply the hook followed by the function to execute. If someone more experienced comes along and helps you out then kudos to them! 🙂

    Have you considered it is a theme or plugin other than BuddyPress causing the issue? I have had this happen to me before and I had to narrow it down by using a process of elimination by reverting to the bp-default theme or twenty twelve and deactivating each plugin one by one and testing registration against it every time until I found the culprit. It was tedious but with all the 3rd party themes and plugins out there that unfortunately introduce bad code then it is a necessary evil. You can’t expect the Dev team to work around all your favorite plugins or themes. I do not put my plugins on the Repo because I personally don’t feel my coding practices are worthy but unfortunately there are developers that release plugins to the Repo just because they want notoriety and in reality they have have little skill and bad coding practices. Also have you considered that you have a crappy host. BP needs more resources than most free or cheap shared hosting solutions won’t supply. What did you actually think Facebook runs off a server 2.2 ghz processor with 1gb ram and a 250gb hard drive lol? Before you blame BuddyPress then do your homework and check the themes and plugins your using. Also learn some respect because nobody owes you nothing!

    Give it time, maybe an expert will give you the insight you need to get it rolling. I am still fairly inexperienced, I am a jack of all trades and a master of nothing when it comes to BuddyPress! Have you tried writing a function, and hooking it to a do_action? Alternatively you could write a function in a child theme’s functions.php or bp-custom.php then copy the buddypress folder with the templates you want to modify and in the particular template file you could simply call that function.
