    Hi John. I’m not sure what you are asking here. The community blogs plugin just insures that a user who meets certain criteria has a role specified by the blog admin in that blog. It either creates a user in the blog or bumps a user’s existing role if needed.

    You are asking if it can be enhanced to allow an admin to create posts as another user? No, never had that in mind at all. It just creates a blog user or bumps the user’s role higher.

    Yep you have GD support. Do you still have the same problem with RC-1?

    bobman024, well by my count you have eight other plugins running that have javascript associated with them. Something is conflicting with the jquery.livequery library that bp is trying to use. Try disabling your plugins one at a time and test the bp ajax. I just tried the alpha list in the member directory and I’m getting an error that the jquery.livequery function doesn’t exist. Yet that library is being sent to the browser. Anything will work for the test but that one is available to me without signing up on your site.

    @modemlooper, if you are changing from one permalink structure to another then the .htaccess file has to be rewritten by wpmu. You should be able to run any permalink struct you want. When you modify the permalink structure make sure you temporarily change the directory that contains your .htaccess file for wpmu to 777 and then make the change. Change it back to something safe afterwards.

    If wpmu thinks you have permalink struct A and .htaccess is setup to handle B then you get problems.

    php can be compiled with a variety of extensions to the core php library one of them is the GD image library. If you create a php file with the following:

    <?php

    phpinfo()

    ?>

    Call it myphpinfo.php. Put that someplace reachable by your web server, doc root and visit that page it’ll give you way more than you want to know about your server’s version of php.

    You can check the ownership and permissions of files and directories by logging in telnet to your ‘root’ account.

    Upgrade to RC-1 and look to see what phpinfo() has to say about your servers php version.

    – Is the gd image library linked into php 5.x on your server?

    – Do you have apache creation rights in the /wp-content/blogs.dir directory all the way down to ../avatars/1/<avatar images>?

    – Try 775 for all dirs starting at /wp-content/blogs.dir and all the way down.

    There are a couple of solutions.

    One is to just use the bp group forums as is. mikepratt has a nice example of this at http://buglenotes.com.

    johnjamesjacoby has the bbGroups plugin working over at http://delsolownersclub.com/discussions

    fishbowl81 has taken a different approach with http://gorgeousgamers.com/beta/forums/ with the discussion starting about this in https://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=1321

    @John, nothing prevents a blog having everyone as ‘editor’. I can just add a role to the default roles in the community blogs plugin.

    @hempsworth, I’d like to see the same functionality you describe in bp for group blogs. I started it with the community blogs plugin. Haven’t gotten any further with it.

    Your ‘domain’ is subdomain.example.com and your blogs will be blog.subdomain.example.com? I’m not a linux or networking guru by any means but I don’t see why that isn’t possible. As long as your DNS records and wpmu reflect that subdomain.example.com is the ‘domain’ for wpmu. I think I’ve seen someone who visits here have that setup. I don’t remember who it was though. It was just a hmmm that’s interesting kind of passing thought.

    Any linux site admin/networking gurus out there? Perhaps you can explain the details of how you have things setup in DNS, .htaccess and wpmu right now.

    @johnjamesjacoby, I see the same thing John. The integration of ‘standalone’ apps such as blogs and forums under the bp umbrella using XMLRPC if necessary. We can’t rely on the possibility of deep integration of apps to be a given. Why should we even assume that it is possible? With that mechanism we don’t have to. bbpress and wp have full blown interfaces to their respective guts.

    It’s possible to even completely decouple bbpress, wpmu blogs and bp so that only user identity is the common thread throughout each that ties the apps together. The implication is that they don’t *have* to run on the same server or be managed by the same site admin. I have ideas about that but I’m already way out of the zone and tone of this thread. :)

    Did I mention the member theme? Heavy lifting? Ya, I see I did.

    @burtadsit

    We’ve got two themes going on in bp. The ‘blog’ theme and the member theme. bp ships with a home theme that is a widget framework. It serves as the theme that many activate as their ‘blog’ theme to run on the wpmu root blog. You’ll also see lots of standard WP themes being used and adapted to serving as the root blog theme. Lots of wonderful examples of what is possible are available.

    Developing new member themes seem to be the challenging area that needs attention. Since the gurus are asking, I suggest you folks do some heavy lifting in that area.

    Standard WP themes could also use a touch of bp flavor. Integration of some bp features into a WP theme might be nice. bp flavors such as:

    – Profile and avatar support in blog posts, comments. When viewing an author or comment stream many times I’d like to leave a quick private note to somebody. Within the avatar/name/vcard block perhaps a link to send them a bp private message.

    – Use of bp’s Groups for blog orientation. By orientation I mean that the blog theme should be constructed with multiple users in mind. As a given and not an afterthought. That the blog is a cooperative endeavor and should reflect that fact.

    – Integration of the wire component as an ‘aside’ tool. General, quick comment area for members not tied to specific posts.

    – A blog is also an individual’s way of expressing themselves yes. However in bp people have friends, belong to groups and have a personal activity stream. Perhaps some way of including that without launching the entire member profile for somebody would be nice.

    I guess all my suggestions have to do with integrating useful bp features into standard WP themes so that the theme reflects to visitors they are just not in WP’s version of Kansas anymore. Which they aren’t. We don’t have to hit people over the head with social networking features, just include them in a natural and appropriate manner.

    First thing I thought was ‘ooooh, pretty lights!’. ‘Course I just came back from a visit with 4 & 6 yr old kids. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. Very useful. Now what was Red again?

    John, intentional. My template shows the group avs for the groups I belong to. You can change it.

    OK. Certainly not your fault John. Mine for being in too much of a hurry to get things working with RC-1 and not doing thorough testing.

    Community Blogs v0.41 available:

    http://code.ourcommoninterest.org/2009/01/02/community-and-group-blogs-in-a-can/

    I added an action that can be trapped when a user is added or upgraded. For your time and trouble. :)

    Testing it again I see that nope it doesn’t work. I must have screwed up something in latest version. I’ll debug it and post a msg here. I have something to do for a couple of hours but I’ll get to it today. Thanks for the heads up. :)

    Oh. “site admin”, you must be using Tarski theme or have the meta widget running in your theme. I thought you were talking about “site admin” in the mu backend.

    Do you get an error msg saying “Invalid group slug: ‘your-group-slug'”?

    miguael, I didn’t see those posts you mentioned but I did notice that you blogs don’t seem to have the same permalink structure. I don’t think that could relate to the issue you describe. It’s just the first thing I noticed. The posts on your front page seem to link to the correct posts on other blogs.

    In reply to: How to upgrade?

    @burtadsit

    You can reinstall the old bp plugins and database backup if you choose to. Daily backups should be a part of life for you. Eat breakfast, backup the site. Yes, upgrade to RC-1. Support will be impossible otherwise. That will be the first thing anybody asks/tells you. If you do run into problems nobody is going to pay much attention to you because we are not going to revert to a previous version just to try and duplicate your problem. :) All versions of software have problems. RC-1 is the most recent and stable version of bp.

    innoj, not sure what is going on. You have Community Blogs 0.4 installed. You’ve activated it on the blog that you want to be a group blog. (this is not an mu-plugins type thing) As a normal user who belongs to a group that you setup in the settings page, you visit the group blog. You are now a contributor/author.

    “Site Admin” shouldn’t show at all if you are contributor/author.

    modemlooper, I took a fresh look at your site and you aren’t sending the js for jquery. These links to script code are empty in the browser.

    <script src=”http://twitterfic.com/wp-includes/js/jquery/jquery.js?ver=1.2.6&#8243; type=”text/javascript”/>

    <script src=”http://twitterfic.com/wp-content/mu-plugins/bp-core/js/jquery/jquery.livequery.pack.js?ver=2.7&#8243; type=”text/javascript”>

    Check the permissions and ownership and existence of those files and their containing directories please. The js isn’t running it because the browser isn’t getting it.
