    DJPaul with all due respect I don’t know why you are so dismissive of a FB connect feature??? Let me say as someone who actually uses the software to run a community, this is a very important feature and has become almost a de-facto “must have” to grow a small social community. The easier you can make it for people to join the larger and more diverse your BuddyPress users and community will be. While I might not like some things about Facebook personally turning a blind eye towards effectively using FBConnect is literally like shooting oneself in the foot. Just like changing the default theme was critical to wider adoption, I can assure you having good social connect features will help broaden BuddyPress’s appeal even more.

    I looked at your site and three things right off the top;

    1). Ditch the Get Satisfaction button and link to them. That code for their widget is terrible AND it will definitely slow down your site. I think you should also think about the other social bookmark widget too. I would also add that there are time when the Facebook Fan widget loads really slowly. Better yet just take all of those off then see if your site loads faster. Bottom line keep the JavaScript widgets to a minimum.

    2). Add this to the top of your .htaccess file;

    AddType x-mapp-php5 .php

    AddHandler x-mapp-php5 .php

    3). If 2 worked add this to the top of your header.php

    ?php

    ini_set(‘zlib.output_compression’, ‘On’);

    ini_set(‘zlib.output_compression_level’, ‘1’);

    ?

    (of course ad the <> )

    Try all three of those things and see how much faster you are loading… Andrea is right next time add a link to your site if you want help.

    I am going to hold off on any upgrading of my existing active communities until BuddyPress 1.2 is final. Hopefully most if not all of the plugins will have been updated. Any new sites I launch will be with 2.9.1.1 (or 2.9) and 1.2 BuddyPress. I have been testing the software and it runs amazingly well! I am extremely excited!

    @Choufi Yessir I followed those directions to the letter. However my install is a sub-directory not sub-domain site. For some reason there does seem to be a difference how some of the plugins work within those two types of domains. Here is what Erwin suggest I do:

    “Just uncomment (take out the /* and */) around lines 21 to 25 [the require lines]) and you’ll be fine. This worked on 2.8.3, but not on 2.9”

    I think that I am going to just hold off on any upgrading until 1.2 comes out. Because my little growing community is accustomed to the features they currently have and I don’t want them to lose any right now.

    @nickbwatson I had fatal errors like that too until I deleted the error causing plugins.

    Ok after rolling back to 2.8.6 all is back to normal… Ouch that hurt! Anyone else try 2.9.1?

    @vincole I am also a BuddyPress convert too but I also was WordPress fan back before version 2. BuddyPress has come a very LONG way in a very short period of time. Because of the extensible nature of WordPress no two install need be the same. It’s an awesome piece of code!

    Now in 100% honesty THE ONLY comparable software out there is SocialEngine. It’s funny though because they are in the midst of a big rev too, and I know that they are really looking at BuddyPress and looking at ways to out run and gun it. I would say if you are looking for an alternative to BuddyPress that is really the only good option.

    Oh Mike go over ther you have to see the show… features people were begging for a long time they are rolling out in quick fashion. They have a new twitter integration (a lot like twire if you ask me). You can easily generate your own sitemaps now, and a few others like javascript in the network headers. I’m telling you Buddypress must really have them scared. :-)

    I keep one eye on what they have going on because I still have a few networks that I am wanting to export/import out of there… But I will never ever go back to that joint I love Buddypress! In addition there is no way the Ning freemium business model is going to be sustainable aver the long term. They are going to have to take liberties from their networks sooner or later. It will be more painful the next time they do.

    First let me say to Erwin… thank you because I know that his Events plugin made myself and A LOT of people give Buddypress a second (and third) look. He is to be commended for his work. This plugin as well as the new default theme are what is going to help massive adoption by web developers who are stuck with services like NING.

    On a side note it is AMAZING how quickly Ning has responded to the NEW competition. LOL! You have to smile…

    @richins it’s there at least. Did you check your database? Are the activity entries still there?

    I thought there was a mysql database fix for this but I can’t seem to find it… It plagued me with my last install of 1.1.3 and now it’s acting up on my new install. Uggh!

    @Alex i like your idea but my only concern would be that unless the authorization process was handled by a separate server this would easily create way too high cpu utilization and/or database reqs. Would OpenID be able to facilitate this or is that a dead project? I haven’t been keeping up with it.

    Wow guys I think that everyone needs to keep in mind just how far BuddyPress has come over the last year. Yes there have been some hiccups along the way, but 2009 has been an amazing year for BuddyPress! Just remember that we are still 1.x software here folks! I just found my 1.x version of Final Cut Pro the other day and the box alone is 1/5 the size of my current version 7.x of FCP Studio (and it ran on OS9). I tell you all this so to remind you that we are all here at the infancy of what is going to continue to be a fantastic piece of software! Cheers and Happy New Year!

    I hear you but to grow your community these connects are vital. People just DO NOT want to fill out profile information or upload a picture. That is what i see as the main advantage of using them. I think that regardless of OUR perception of these services the fact is that many people use them, and trust them. It’s a no brainer to me to grab some of their “feel goods” by putting a connect feature on my sites.

    I have run into the duplicate thing already and i just delete the duplicate user after sending a note explaining why. Not that big of a deal.

    @Erich73 In my opinion a BudyPress site works best if there are blog creators/writers and subscribers. Hopefully if things go well the majority should be Subscribers. Those folks will rarely if ever see the backend. I for one WANT my bloggers to have almost full access to the backend and all of it’s features. You have to give them that level of control to ensure their buy in. To me the best example of a really great BuddyPress site is a group of a half dozen or so rocking awesome blogs and a community that develops around them, NOT a community where 100 users have 100 play blogs where “test” becomes the prevailing blog title. You add some additional discussion related features like groups, forums, and events and i think you have a great formula for a thriving community.

    I HOPE that BuddyPress does not become a member aggregation site where, the more people, the more successful a site is “perceived” to be. That to me is the game that Ning is playing. Why in the world woulu Buddypress want to be another Ning?

    @derekbolden

    What are we talking about here guys? Only the blog creators will ever see the dashboard on a regular basis. All the users that are subscribers will rarely if ever see it. Create a subscriber account for yourself and check that for yourself. I think you all are being too demanding on software that is so young. BuddyPress as an add on to a blogging/CMS platform is what I want, not the other way around. If we go that route what are going to end up with? Gifts?

    I think you all might want to check out some of those other software suites I mentioned previously (out of that bunch I really like Social Engine).

    BTW the thought of gifts makes me vomit just a little…

    I think that Bloggus, Peterverkooijen, and others are not seeing the potential. I looked REALLY hard at SocialEngine, JomSocial, and a few others (follow me @crankyderek for my complete list) in the end i came back to BuddyPress BECAUSE of the fact that the users that wanted to blog could create their own dynamic blogs! Why build a community that offers more or less the same functionality of Facebook or Myspace? Odds are most of your users are there already. Do you really think you are going to get a daily (Hell hourly if they play one of those Zygna games) Facebook user to come visit your site with the same frequency when all your community offers is duplicate functionality, copycat features and NONE or few of their friends… Don’t you see it’s the things that make BuddyPress different that will make it succeed.

    This is an excellent topic! With my new install I am finding that I am having to hand hold the new bloggers hands quite a bit more than just the average site “subscriber”. For the uninitiated the back end can be very confusing indeed. Overall though I think BuddyPress is very usable as is.

    I am not sure if this fix works for sub directory sites… uggh! Any help here guys would be much appreciated! There should be a round trip back to the BP register page from all blogs in a site. Help!

    I love the new theme! I am so glad that you all paid attention to this because I know that this was a major stumbling bloack for many of us early adopters. I cant’ wait to see the fbconnect functions added back in.

    Marius I also want to thank you for your help. You and Erwin are to be commended for bp-events which in my opinion should be a core BuddyPress function. I hope that all of the functions that were once in that plugin make there way back in. I also have the latest version running and it help smooth out some of the wonks with my theme.
