    @brianglanz Yes if you have contributed before you should still have access, thanks for confirming though, and for contributing πŸ™‚

    This isn’t really a BuddyPress question as such. Try googling/searching the WP plugin repo for WordPress subscription / membership plugins, there are a few that will serve your purposes S2Member is generally suggested as a good one.

    it would be incredibly helpful to add dividers or typographical rules/hierarchy to the buddypress.org documentation β€˜subpages’ panel

    And that is exactly the sort of thing that is being worked on as part of the codex initiative, you can see what is proposed by following posts on bpdevel, the BP development blog. It does take time to get changes, even to this degree, tested and pushed up to the production site, bp.org is actually a more complex site setup than might be realised and it’s codebase handles all the BP and bbP sites and access is very limited to these sites as they run on WP servers and time is quite tight for the lead developers.

    BP Trac has a current ticket and patches addressing a few issues one of which is the Codex page menu to both introduce a sectional page menu and typographical styles to denote parent/child links so things are clearer

    Hmm I hope we don’t come across as aggressive, if we do it’s unintentional.

    I’m assuming this post is in part prompted by your threads here about your @mentions question.

    A few pointers that will help yourself and others when engaging on forums, especially those of a technical variety; let it be known in the opening post that one has searched for answers, perhaps tried a few things, this goes a long way to generating a positive return response ( not suggesting for one minute you didn’t though ), ensure that you attempt to describe your issue / question as fully as possible, explain just what you are trying to achieve, that is more directed at your original post as there was a point of confusion – no ones fault in particular – the @mentions filter code you were provided with most probably did work but not in the way you expected or at least worked to the extent of the question asked ‘Remove @mentions’ as @mentions tends to mean the ability to add to an update and have it automagically convert to a link but also there is the rendering of the users @mention name which wouldn’t be affected by the filters shown.

    I’m glad you have found further help on the same issue and from a regular user, looking at the threads, I note in the original the fact that you did respond back which I and the other moderator missed – perhaps ironically – using @mention in the forum posts is quite important as it’s easily possible to lose track of threads unless prompted to return to them.

    Lastly sometimes what might be perceived as an ‘attitude’ isn’t really but may be more a perfunctory response, concious of time factors, and the fact that many want help and the actual community members responding and helping is disproportionally small to those seeking answers.

    What else have you tried? There are very many posts on this subject in the forum archives that might suggest approaches to take, try a search through them for more information o9n this issue and what other people have tried or suggest as options.

    You could install this plugin and see if it helps:

    @gnfb you have already created a thread for this question, please don’t create new ones and subject lines must reflect the issue. Closing this thread please bump the other if you haven’t had a response.

    @ad4m_wordpress Codex is another word for documentation, ‘codify’, here it’s the link on the main menu labelled ‘Documentation’ The WP documentation is also referred to as ‘The Codex’.

    Your initial requirement would have been served by the simple use of one of the provided BP template tags e.g:
    <?php echo bp_core_get_userlink(bp_loggedin_user_id()); ?>
    which will render a fully formed link and also takes parameters.

    I’m just trying to avoid paying $50 an hour to a programmer who will take 30 seconds to do this for me.

    In that case you will need to learn to code! That is how you will avoid the skilled services of a developer πŸ™‚

    The codex is worth checking also there have been quite a few posts here in general on re-directs so those may help.

    BuddyPres is designed to slot into themes using it’s Theme Compatibility default templates and minimal styling, there aren’t really custom styles anywhere, if you need to adjust BP styles you’ll need to modify your themes stylesheet or copy over BP’s and modify that one – guides to BP and overloading/copying files to themes can be found in the BP codex under Themes.

    This isn’t a BuddyPress issue though is it!

    As the message says your server or hosting account doesn’t have sufficient memory for php processes in this specific instance and needs to be increased. Contact your host to see whether this is possible and also search on the WP Codex for other ways of dealing with memory issues.

    You float the li elements, clearing to the left on every fourth one using the nth css selector. Essentially it’s a styling matter.

    @miama Please don’t just post bits of code like this without explanation of why you think they are relevant to the issue, you were asked to try a standard theme, what happened when you did?

    Have you any caching plugins running.

    Have you contacted this premium themes author for any help/support?

    Also please format code when you do post it using the code button.

    @nimagh Please don’t copy posts to multiple forum categories.

    You will need a developer to realise this site spec I suggest you post to the BP jobs board and leave a contact email.

    @brent-havill while ‘we’ will help out as much as possible the forum is geared to help with specific BP issues, from what you have shown us in this thread you have a highly custom and specialist site in which BP plays a supporting role or perhaps a more involved role depending on what custom coding has been effected to tie BP into your course theme and supporting functions.

    It is going to be close to impossible to help you in any really practical sense without direct access to the code & install, and in that respect and given the type of site you appear to be attempting to run you will need development support for this and any other issues that almost inevitably will arise (not meaning to be alarmist but sites do require attention from developers from time to time to ensure things run smoothly)

    As for the BP notifications setting , enable that but understand what it does in enabling users to manage their member details from the front end and to set or unset a series of notification types they wish to receive – is this where things aren’t working for you? it’s hard to say but likely not, however we simply do not know what type of custom work may have been done to extend any default functionality.

    I’m slightly surprised a reference error causes this issue, one tends to see plenty of them from many files including some from WP JS.

    We could run a check on the variable to see if it’s defined before parsing that line, I’ll open a trac ticket with a patch, but that – if accepted – won’t be in core for a month or so.

    You could edit your core file, but I stress this is a core modification and will be overwritten in updates so if this fix works for you but doesn’t get committed to core you would need to add it again after updates.

    locate admin.js in /buddypress/bp-activity/js/ and modify line 170 to resemble this:

    // in single Activity Administration screen.

    if( typeof postboxes !== 'undefined' ) {

     postboxes.add_postbox_toggles( bp_activity_admin_vars.page );
    }

    As I thought we had covered something similar to this in the distant past:
    https://buddypress.org/support/topic/set-wmodetransparent-for-oembed-plugin/

    Based on that I’ve re-worked things to something a lot lot simpler which appears to work, but testing in these circs is going to be minimal so there may be issues – this would be dropped into your functions.php file in theme.

    function ie_oembed_wmode( $embed ) {

       $embed = str_replace( '?feature=oembed', '?feature=oembed&wmode=opaque', $embed);

       return $embed;
    }
    add_filter( 'embed_oembed_html', 'ie_oembed_wmode', 15 );

    In reply to: Youtube z-index

    @hnla

    This is not a z-index issue as such, it’s a very old problem that has been around for ages and is to do with managing the parameters for this object, the correct or intended behaviour is for flash player to hover as it were on the page independent of the natural stacking order of the dom elements. Adding the parameter wmode=”opaque” overrides this and sets the player into the page – flattens it where it should then observe the stacking order or applied z-indices.

    The issue is going to be accessing the elements to add this parameter.

    If you search around you would eventually find this post on WP forums, which includes the rather convoluted solution to forcing the iframe element to work with wmode=opaque
    https://wordpress.org/support/topic/help-adding-wmodetransparent-to-oembeds ( the post appears to suggest the question might have been asked here in the past? search?)

    I’ll copy the pastebin example function here for your convenience, use at your own risk πŸ™‚

    add_filter( 'the_content' , 'mh_youtube_wmode' , 15 );

    function mh_youtube_wmode( $content ) {

    // Regex to find all <ifram ... > YouTube tags
    $mh_youtube_regex = "/\<iframe .*youtube\.com.*><\/iframe>/";

    // Populate the results into an array
    preg_match_all( $mh_youtube_regex , $content, $mh_matches );

    // If we get any hits then put the update the results
    if ( $mh_matches ) {;
    	for ( $mh_count = 0; $mh_count < count( $mh_matches[0] ); $mh_count++ )
    		{
    		// Old YouTube iframe
    		$mh_old = $mh_matches[0][$mh_count];

    		$mh_new = str_replace( "?feature=oembed" , "?wmode=transparent" , $mh_old );
    		$mh_new = preg_replace( '/\><\/iframe>$/' , ' wmode="Opaque"></iframe>' , $mh_new );

    		// make the substitution
    		$content = str_replace( $mh_old, $mh_new , $content );
    		}
    	}
    return $content;
    }

    This doesn’t include solutions for BP oembeds though, the whole function could do with scrutiny and perhaps updating a little.

    @@henrywright yes we essentially had to shut off access to the WP backend as the only effective way to cut off the bots as it was such an overwhelming and sustained onslaught, unlike anything I’ve seen before and I’ve experienced a few over the years. When access restored you should be able to post, hopefully whoever has had access previously i.e published pages was/is an author should find they continue to be able to edit/publish as they used to.

    @hnla

    @mmaccou you should always check the BuddyPress documentation for things like this as well as third party sites.

    In this instance the required item is not perhaps that obvious to find, so I’m considering a version of the page slightly re-written and added under our ‘Administrators’ section.

    @henrywright this could qualify as a neat little tip/custom function for the codex, if you care to? Although if being used this means messaging is active, is it not still prudent to run an active check bailing if not?
