In reply to: IE destroys my custom home page
Add the html validator plugin for Firefox that will give you real time sgml validation that matches the W3C validator but offline has you developUseful plugin Pisanojm wonder how much memory it consumes
In reply to: Privacy component–where is it?Not sure what Automattic would or should be doing? Features that perhaps ought to be part of the core is on the agenda to be discussed at the dev chat with a view to identifying some of the work that might be suitable for bringing into the core and I would expect something like Jeff’s privacy plugin to be at the top of that list.
In reply to: IE destroys my custom home pageI’m afraid to say that the layout does not hold together in Opera either and this is a ‘Modern’ generation browser that supports Standrds and CSS very well.
Validating markup is key to many layout issues and even mod1 eyeballs.
<php
/*
Template Name: Custom Front Page
*/
?>
At the top of your index page is causing sgml parsers to void the DTD declaration you need to correct this error initially then look at how the layout stacks up, at the moment you are forcing browsers into ‘Quirks Mode’ each and every browsers will give you a different take on what it thinks is the correct rendering of the page.There are other markup issues which you will need to address such as illegal nesting of elements; an anchor element may not contain Block level elements such as divs, and there is no proscribed manner in which browsers are meant to correct malformed markup, they make a best guess stab at things and clearly IE8 is struggling with that although it will suffer more than other browsers from being forced to render in quirks mode, it’s only a half decent browser when allowed to render in ‘Standards Mode’.
One last thing and please don’t take offense but that roaming toolbar thing is extremely irritating and if a client asked me to implement something like that I would simply and flatly refuse
In reply to: IE destroys my custom home page@pcwriter you don’t provide anything for anyone to look at

However whenever anyone states that something works on one page but not another that generally means that there is somewhere what should be fairly obvious differences in markup or CSS between the two.
In reply to: Privacy component–where is it?Folks I’m sure Jeff will update and hopefully release the first stable version soon but bear in mind that it’s pretty involved plugin dealing with an area that is quite tricky so requires careful testing before releasing in the wild. We must take care not to impose too much on plugin authors that are essentially working for free and giving what amounts to a great deal of productive coding time to the community (although I do hope that users of this plugin do indeed donate towards Jeff’s time spent coding this) Jeff also did state elsewhere that he is, at this moment, very busy, so we must be patient

Have to admit slightly surprised Shared Hosting accounts can do this, but there you go! I have tested running BP as low as 2MB, loading, unloading plugins, running the site performing various basic tasks and it didn’t crap out at all. Anything above 64MB is likely to be fine for most situations your new limit would give a decent safety margin I would have thought.
Well that will be plenty
64MB should normally be sufficient but it all depends on what is running. Does the Grid service make you pay a monthly fee to have a healthy PHP mem limit, bit unusual. If you can stretch to it I would get the basic starter VDS from them.In reply to: Buddypress child theme creating problems@modemlooper it was default theme originally , then you must have seen 2010 now I see something called sufusion[sic] not really going to be possible to help with themes changing on a second by second basis
In reply to: Buddypress child theme creating problemsHmm there are too many overflow:hiddens really, some are not required, such as on floated elements as floats create their own new stacking context and therefore have to contain floated children, and there is a mix of float:left and position:absolute on the same element in the centre column where both can never exist together pos:abs overules float, have you been making adjustments to the layout containers for this child theme? I would need to look closer to see where best to correct issues but a few overflows should probably be removed and replaced with a clearfix solution or simply removed.
Regards bumping threads: please wait a little bit longer than one hour, that is far too soon to be bumping threads for attention, generally rule of thumb on this and other forums is 24 hours.
In reply to: Hidden and Private Groups Activity Escaping…Well it doesn’t appear that easy to reproduce as I’ve just tried on my production server test site running WP 3.0 and BP 1.2.5. Created a new group, set it as hidden, Added an update, and a forum thread and there is no sign of the two pieces of data in the activity stream.
This is why detail is vital, this is a serious issue if true and as I’ve said one that I first discovered and reported in the Trac a while ago, a solution was tested and as far as I was aware eventually committed to a version release, if not this has to be looked at again.
When you see these pieces of data are you logged in as a member who is a friend of someone who belongs to a hidden group as this was the issue originally.
In reply to: Moving to a new URL.You would simply ensure the existing DB had new domain name entries, having ensured safety backups in case of disasters. You might want to set up a 301 permanent redirect from old domain to new though
In reply to: Moving to a new URL.Should simply be a case of trawling through the DB and changing all instances of the old domain name to the new one.
In reply to: Moving to a new URL.Clarify “move to a new url”? Do you mean you are simply moving to a new server or actually to a new domain name?
I get hoping mad when people send me Word files, I hate the presumption that I would have or want bloated MS software, other than the sadly necessary OS. pdf is in terms of this discussion a safe format, Word doc files are not getting uploaded to any server that I can exercise control of, nor – unless a trusted source – do I download Word docs; zips are not that safe either

The OP mentions allowing upload of Word docs so they could contain Macro viruses, I would not be allowing Word docs to be uploaded unless they could be screened in some fashion.
In reply to: Hidden and Private Groups Activity Escaping…How are non members of hidden or private groups seeing this, how is it “getting outside” Steps to reproduce this would be helpful as this is an issue I raised a ticket on quite a while back but it may not be exactly the same issue.
Yes I’m aware of the issue with incorrect back ticks for quotes as It’s arisen all too often recently and why I asked whether you had copy and pasted;
still, doesn’t explain why the Constant didn’t work for me , will have to look again.yep me being dumb
@nuprn1 have you any notion of why the constant definition causes an issue? or indeed why it’s required?
@nickmy please don’t hijack threads it’s makes for confusion. Please start a fresh topic on your issue/requirement.
Doesn’t look to be. You followed the steps above exactly?
I’m not sure why the Constant is required and that for me just causes the profile link to fail to load, the function however works as described.
Did you copy and paste the code directly from this page?
In reply to: Newbie, BuddyPress Installation Problems!@teenchat what didn’t work? did you manage to upload the BP files manually via FTP? Did BP simply not want to activate? We need fair bit of detail in order to help effectively,. What exactly didn’t work?
Sidenote: To avoid memory issues ensure that PHP mem limits are as high as you can get them i.e 64MB or higher.
I have just updated this codex section with a brief guide to using Poedit along with updating custom files with any new POT file updates.
In reply to: Hey Paul Thanks For Proving My Points<snip>I’m worried that BP won’t be around long term
I don’t see why it wouldn’t be? I think the issue is moving BP forward at a pace and in a direction that is felt correct and to start addressing issues raised about the core with each milestone reached and this is happening. As I said in my last paragraph above I don’t consider BP a fully mature App yet but it’s young, and like any project to some degree you don’t really know some of it’s short comings until people like yourself do start using it in earnest and providing / feeding back real world experience.
<snip>This is nothing short of a hobby site, or at the very least is run as such
I think the criticism unjustified, at least as applied to this actual dev site, to the project as a whole, possibly until that is people like yourself start using the app for sites that are more than hobby projects. As for buddypress.org the core team are presently attempting to correct and improve the site.
I think the point has been raised that long rambling threads that simply point out issues or that seem to simply moan are not constructive BUT from time to time they have there uses such as the now infamous “Is BP dying thread” that thread helped raise issues that were of concern and that are now being addressed.
In reply to: Newbie, BuddyPress Installation Problems!So you can upload, I presume, through the WP interface, (media library) and now you are trying to install the BP plugin but it’s not finishing? Can you upload the plugin via FTP and get it installed that way?
