    Shouldn’t be a nested plugins folder within the main plugin folder, your ftp-ing has gone awry at some stage, delete the child folder and all contents

    The reference in the two posts above yours is saying that the simplest approach is to edit the file entry.php in the /activity folder of the theme; this would be preferably done as a child theme i.e a copy of the files in a new theme directory you would then be looking for lines such as:

    <a href=”<?php bp_activity_comment_link() ?>” class=”acomment-reply” id=”acomment-comment-<?php bp_activity_id() ?>”><?php _e( ‘Reply’, ‘buddypress’ ) ?> (<span><?php bp_activity_comment_count() ?></span>)</a>

    and removing them or placing some form of conditional statement around them – I removed all links for a copy of entry.php which I pulled onto a custom frontpage but allowed the links for the activity stream as a directory view.
    It’s a little long winded but straightforward

    You may need to explain things in greater detail. Installed WP? and could you login in to the backend? before any plugins were uploaded; or had you managed to activate BuddyPress?

    The error message you are getting is covered quite a few times on WP forums and the issue stems from WP rather than BP so you may like to look through a few of these threads for solutions?

    The article is pretty clearly written really.

    It says look at the bp-core-adminbar.php file as a point of reference, here is where the menus are constructed and clue you in to how they are added to the actual pages via the action hooks.

    If you simply wanted to remove an action as the page describes you would simply add an opposite action i.e:

    remove_action(‘bp_adminbar_menus’, ‘bp_adminbar_blogs_menu’, 6);

    Further it explains that you can now create a new function based on the existing one and is where examining the original file is useful, you can simply copy the whole function bp_adminbar_blogs_menu() paste it into a child themes function.php file rename the function slightly bp_my_adminbar_blogs_menu() make whatever modifications you want within the function then add itback into the mix via a new add_action so you remove original:

    remove_action(‘bp_adminbar_menus’, ‘bp_adminbar_blogs_menu’, 6);

    ## create new function ##
    function bp_my_adminbar_blogs_menu() {

    }
    ## add new function to admin menubar ##
    add_action(‘bp_adminbar_menus’, ‘bp_my_adminbar_blogs_menu’, 6);

    You add mods such as this to functions.php file as this way you ensure that you do not have to continually re-write them in a core file, core files should never be changed as each new BP version will replace the files and any adjustments will be lost, working in a child theme ensures these changes are preserved and continue to work after version upgrades.

    Doesn’t necessarily work like that, some rulesets are within a block of generic table styles, some within other sections, you won’t find a specific block of styles to easily lift out. Really your best approach if you are building as a child theme is to call in the default.css and then overwrite it with your styles in styles.css or custom.css, as you do that you can, if necessary, remove default styles as you identify them.

    Using Firebug doesn’t force you to rebuild anything if you follow the general approach that is intended when using a custom.css, you still use default.css then use Firebug to identify the ruleset styling an element and copy the selectors to custom.css and style to your requirements, remove the original default rulesets if you want to or simply leave them in place.

    Easiest method of seeing where elements are being styled in stylesheets is to use Firebug for firefox which allows you to inspect page elements for views of the DOM and rulesets applied to a given element.

    I suspect that this plugin hasn’t been updated to work with later versions of WP/BP.

    I would follow the link Paul left you in this thread:
    https://buddypress.org/community/groups/creating-extending/forum/topic/profile-google-map-in-this-site/

    and implement that map function which is very straightforward, although not an actual plugin.

    If you are wanting to ensure that the flash object actually sits as part of the page you will want wmode=”opaque” rather than ‘transparent’.

    Adding this attribute is not that straightforward, Rays plugin uses the WP oembed class and a quick glance at that doesn’t reveal a simple approach to adding this attribute and I’m finding the markup construction rather fractured to follow however there appears to be filters that could be used.

    I think a shoutout to @r-a-y might be in order as he will probably know how to feed a new attribute to the object tag – if it proves not feasible the only solution I could think of would be to inject the attribute using jQuery but it wouldn’t be the best approach.

    @nuprn1 Might have been for fun but good patch nonetheless, essential bit of security supplying original password and seen in so many apps

    @boonebgorges Your point about plugin development is exactly why I felt a little reticent in expressing my feelings. Plugin development is part of the intrinsic nature of WP and it’s sibling/child modules (I still have a problem refering to BP as a plugin , it’s nearly a standalone app?) and to ask any developers to shift focus from that to the core app is a difficult one. Obviously billing for core development is next to impossible and we all know that – if we’re honest developers – we don’t bill clients for the testing of work or for cross browser conformance or for implementing 17 different image galleries because we want to find a new cool one for clients site etc.

    All that none withstanding I do have this impression that there is a lot of plugin development and that this development slightly fractures the strong focus that BP might need?

    I also still feel that many plugins – your ‘Invite Anyone’ is a prime example – should really be core modules or extensions much as we have BP ‘Components Setup’ as these plugins enhance and improve part of the core that already exists or add components that one might expect to be core in a social network app.

    I would like to see, perhaps?, something along the lines of a Trac milestone when a pretty stable BP is reached (1.4?) that sets out a process for identifying and bringing in certain plugins to the core , but this is probably something better discussed in a dev chat and is looking quite far forward; I also see an issue where the author has put substantial time and effort into development of the plugin and would hope there was some means of recompense given that the plugin would effectively cease to exist as downloadable and donateable

    Inequality signs or ‘greater than/less than’ if you want angle brackets then you’ll need to escape them or at least the less than angle symbol.

    @erich73 very true, it’s been requested before and again now for all and any willing and capable members to start to run through that body of Trac tickets for 1.3, the more experienced might be able to provide fixes or even just set things off on the right track anything like that helps the core team, after that testing is one of the huge burdens that falls on any developer, the more we help in testing fixes the more time the core devs will have. I think that time is the biggest enemy for many of us which is why the more that can muck in the better. Ultimately the speed at which versions are released and the quality of those releases will be down to the wider community, if no one helps out then things will come together but a heck of a lot slower.

    This next point is purely a personal feeling but I think it wouldn’t hurt to see a general slow down on plugin writing or feature extending in favour of a little more focus on the core app, but I realise it’s not really practical to expect plugin development to take a back seat and that there are plugins in development that people are crying out for :)

    Another very good SC plugin(free) is Fireshot for Firefox.

    @erich73

    The intelligent coders are all here, waiting and willing, posts such as this are the clarion calls to stir everyone to action, and after the recent posts discussing the state of play the core dev team and mods are attempting to ensure the project is put on an even firmer footing.

    In terms of BP as a project and production application I think it’s worth remembering ( I certainly have to remind myself ) that BP is a relatively young project – WP took quite a few years before it settled into a mature app – As for looking to the long term I think that this is addressed in the NextGenAPI which is a necessary next step and one that looks to take BP forward.

    Followers/Following is available as a plugin and has a widget to add ‘users following you’ to any sidebar/widget area. Friends is generally see on your account screen, doesn’t have a widget as such but it shouldn’t be hard to add the friends loop to a function in your functions.php file and to add it then to perhaps a sidebar-me hook to render on the sidebar.

    At the most straightforward level of theming you shouldn’t really need to get too involved at a PHP level, creating a child theme will simply allow you to start overwritting or adding your own CSS styles via the style.css sheet in your new theme directory while still using the default themes files and styles – but you perhaps realise that :)

    @hnla

    You will probably need to check that plugin doesn’t have any known issues reported (there should be a group plugin page for it?)
    See you have found and joined that group. I’m afraid I don’t know the current state of play with that plugin, but it may well need updating by the author before it’s fully compatible with all current WP/BP?

    From an earlier comment : this line worries me:
    for example I have Register Globals off via .htaccess on another site I have on that host.
    Register Globals should never be on really – it was and is a very insecure and dangerous thing and PHP changed it’s default status in php.ini years ago. I hope your host doesn’t have that set ‘On’ as default for all their client sites

    OK they fixed it. They had to disable php safe mode to get it working

    Yep safe mode was the issue (essentially it’s what controls open_base )

    File and directory permissions do need to be set correctly and safely. Generally directories need to be 755 and files 644, and I think if you need to be able to edit theme files from the backend/dashboard then those theme files need to be 666. Always avoid 777 as that is world writable and dangerous.
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_File_Permissions

    However permissions are only one half of the story, you can have them all set correctly and still not be able to create directories such as /group-avatars/. What is essential is that ownership permissions are correct and for these directories to be writable or for files to be able to be moved to their correct location you must have the correct groups set such as ‘apache’ for the parent wp-content directory.

    Glad it’s solved, I was planning to create an account this morning to have a look but sounds like things are now ok.

    Best place to start – if you haven’t already – is the ‘Creating a child theme’ page

    In reply to: when is BP 1.3 out?

    @hnla

    Participant

    I don’t think there is a firm date , there are quite a few Trac tickets to work through and the speed those get resolved at and are tested by community members will tend to dictate the release date; I wouldn’t have thought for a good six weeks yet? but I may be wide of the mark on that. One of the core dev team or mods may have a better idea.

    This will tell you how to change url slugs
    https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/changing-internal-configuration-settings/

    Menu items/text can be changed by adjusting the link in header.php _e( ‘Groups’, ‘buddypress’ ) preferably via a copy of the file in a child theme.

    What versions is this occurring with? I’m assuming 1.2.5.2 with?

    On a WP 3.0 BP 1.2..5 I’m seeing no issues with functions.php, haven’t yet had a chance to take BP to 1.2.5.2 though but do rely on functions.php quite a bit and don’t think many of it’s mods will run from bp-custom.

    Have you definitely gone to the ‘Forums Setup’ link and activated/installed bbpress integration, not so much the component setup link/page.

    I should think the second line in that error log is the problem. open_basedir restriction is something – I believe – that web hosts will employ to ensure safety protocols between different sites on same shared server, it essentially states a directory within which scripts are permitted to run, and in this instance is possibly proving too restrictive.

    You will probably need to open a ticket with your web host and ask them what restrictions are in place, mention the above and ‘PHP Safe Mode’ and ask them if anything can be done to rectify the issue their end, also it may simply be a group permissions issue where you do not have apache as owner of the directory and therefore are trying to perform actions as a group that is being denied.

    Not sure if this will help but it’s sounding more like server issues than BP/WP and if you are on shared hosting it will be best to see what your web hosts can resolve for you.

    If you’re using /installed WP 3.0 that now combines single site and mutli site (blogs) in the one package however you do have to perform some manual file adjustments to enable multisite functionality in the backend from where you then follow the instructions to complete installation.

    You can follow this guide to setting up multi sites:
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network

    As for BP forums have you enabled them in the backend? if you look in the dashboard at the BP section menu links you will see a link to ‘Forums Setup’.

    Profiles is perhaps more a question of personal taste? I personally wouldn’t say that the profile of the default theme is particularly unintuitive, but that isn’t to say there isn’t room for improvement; obviously one can re-configure it somewhat if one uses a child theme and copies the files over to work on; also thre are a few newish plugins to add things like ‘User Stats’ and or ‘Follwers/Follwing’

    @hnla

    So that leaves single WP installs without easy or obvious access to backend if running BP, might be an idea to add a link on the adminbar to dashboard for certain roles, which I’ll have a crack at when I have a moment.

    Dropping you an email shortly Paul
