    This is really a question that is best served by Google! It’s not really a BP issue. The period before a filename on OSX denotes a hidden file iirc . Try creating the file from a terminal – bash or something similar.

    If you state some specifics people here will be able to help and point you in the right direction At the moment all that can be said are a few generalities.

    Essentially ‘things’ rely on functions and actions generally speaking you are able to cancel and call your own functions using a functions.php file in your root child theme folder. give a few specifics that you want to achieve for the adminbar and someone will show you how.

    Child themes work on the principle of overriding existing parent theme files so if you remove the child theme files you should fall back to using the original parent files, so removing /activity in your child theme will not cause these pages to cease to render. Again state some specific items you are looking for and people will help you find them; although to some extent a little trial and error and perseverance is the order of the day, eventually the structure will begin to make sense, it isn’t really that hidden and convoluted for the most part.

    I think the separation between BP’s default theme and the BP code is pretty good, actually. It’s not perfect

    Yep it’s not perfect, it suffers from being too tied into the default theme, something I queried when 1.2 changed the location of the default theme to nestle within the BP core files – an odd thing for a theme in some senses.

    This aspect has been raised though and there is no immediate short term answer, true and proper separation of model/controller from views or mid tier from presentational layer is doubtless a while off yet (Mr Mazz alludes to this aspect in his inner/internal thoughts section of the nextGenAPI paper)

    It took WP an absolute age to get to a stage where it was possible to truly write themes with no fear that each and every upgrade would break custom themes and require hours of work to bring back into line, anyone who was trying to work with WP pre 1.5 era will remember the nightmare fondly :)

    At the moment writing true themes (not simply skins) is a somewhat problematic issue the core can and will and does break your custom themes and involves having to trawl through presentational files finding those changes; this isn’t good and makes it difficult to have confidence in truly creating a theme – however the fact is that the default theme is actually pretty good, creating a child theme from it works pretty well, it will still break and you will still need to find those changes to theme files and transpose them to your child theme file copies, but generally that shouldn’t involve huge amounts of changes.

    Issues need to be addressed but take heart that BP is a million miles ahead of where WP was at this stage and nowhere near as frustrating but you need to have lived through those early WP days perhaps to appreciate that :)

    An upgrade from 2.9.2 WPMU to WP 3.0 is slightly different due to already having multi sites configured, there is a Super Admin section but no ‘Create a Network’ as it already exists, at least that is how it appears to me comparing my 2.9.2 installs against some fresh installs of WP 3.0 multi site enabled

    @hnla

    Upgraded my remaining 2.9.2 to BP 1.2.5 to run a test for you (bit late as it appears now :) )

    I confirm above ‘Activate’ is not site wide, results in sub blogs sans BP , setting ‘Site Wide’ activation results in expected behavior.

    Robots.txt file – google and you will find guides.

    That guide is pretty much what I have used, haven’t really had to consult a guide though in quite a while for this sort of thing. The point of jQuery and cross browser issues is that the library silently resolves them thus using :nth-child as a straight CSS3 pseudo class will not work for IE but using it within the selector group in a jQuery object and the library corrects for the IE deficiency, or at least thats the way I understood it and one of the reasons amongst many I started to use the library over plain vanilla JavaScript?.

    N.B of course I may have got that badly wrong as those of us that have had to struggle through years of IE 5.5 / 6 and the workarounds have tended to avoid CSS3 advanced selectors; would have to test this really.

    Tried a few test in IE6 and can’t get any class tokens added, scripting is running but IE refusing to play ball with even basic add class to some other element, the hover function works, so at a loss for the moment.

    Edit/ was writing this to the ticket but couldn’t post it ? see you have covered my initial point about jQuery and it’s usefulness where advanced selectors are concerned.

    Keep it quiet from JJJ as it just might be the straw that breaks the camels back… hmm camels don’t have stripes do they?

    :) sorry finding this subject hard to take seriously now, striping, should be the simplest thing!

    I utterly refuse to use the phrase ‘Zebra Striping’ again; from now on I have decided it’s ‘Tiger Striping’ yeah and lets leave the poor giraffes alone.

    Don’t quite get this? I have no ‘activate’ or rather it is grayed out and it would be running in multi site mode (WP 3.0)? or should that be in either mode ?does it flip flop the links? – the only option I have is to ‘network activate’ and that works as expected, although there is no separate section for the network activated plugins.

    You may find things run better on a Sinclair ZX spectrum? In all seriousness it’s probably about time you upgraded to a BBC MIcro

    😆 Fixed zebras. Don’t ask.

    I think a thanks is in order to JohnJames for sterling and grueling work in getting 1.2.5 ready and for facing down that rabid pack of zebras

    Initially, and I would be surprised if anyone has yet to really take the plunge, one has to take the child theme route as trying to code presentational files from scratch with apps such as this would defeat even the best frontender, naturally one starts with the existing default theme folder structure, there’s nothing wrong with it and it’s how BP works, however with that copied over most of us with any experience are going to start very heavilly changing the markup (that is not critism of bp-default, which aint half bad )

    There has to be a point where theme files do not suffer any changes, not that is in terms of hooks, functions, variables etc, the odd class not a huge problem as this is really not a core issue but a presentational frontend matter, and if I do not pick that change up no matter I deal with something like that my self or simply pass it by, look at the default theme in passing and realise it’s got a cool feature I lack :)

    It’s a point better perhaps discussed at the dev chat? I raised an agenda topic along thses line as I know from experience if aspects like this are ignored for too long they never get dealt with – yes we have all written comments such /* ought to be improved */ or /* stop gap until better method found*/ and /* ought to be moved to…*/ I still come across them in work I and collegues have written and wince . In BP core files there are comments along the lines of /* must remove markup */ and indeed there is too much markup dotted around core files.

    @nuprn1 thanks I’ll take a look at winmerge, sort of feel I’m missing a better way of using SVN but as I’ve said it’s been a while since I’ve used it and Tortoise and trying to get my head around it’s confusing series of commands is a lot of trial and error – no I’m I’m not about to rtfm :)

    The first row is 0, which is an even number. The second row, is row 1 Yes did know that, if I had stopped to think.

    One thing worries me slightly; with the addition of the class ‘zebra’ on the tables does that not require anyone in future that might generate a table in a plugin realising they need to add this class to their table.

    More importantly though from a theming point of view changes to theme files means that our own themes will break if the changes are of a significant level, I cannot simply copy over say files in /members/single without thinking very carefully as I have a lot of these presentational files heavily modified, and in advance of the 1.2.5 release have had to go through my current actual theme in development and use tortoise svn compare to try and identify changes and manually update my working files, it’s not necessarily that clear if one has caught all those changes. Overall a practice I don’t really wish to have to perform too often.

    Nice touch on the mouseover.
    Empty classes still generated, so I hack core again to overcome that as it’s offensive :)

    Not sure how tr:odd produces alt token on even rows?

    anyhoo appears to be better than before!

    Fixes #2465 and #2475, for real this time. Now theres a confidant man! :)

    I’ll give it a test run as well, but if it doesn’t work…

    @nuprn1 I presume that you have seen Jeff’s ticket on the same issue -said for no particular reason :)

    @johnjamesjacoby At risk of the subject becoming a tad boring :) back to the zebras:

    For the moment, so I can move on I have adjusted bp-forums-templatetags.php – function bp_get_the_topic_css_class() ~580 to the snippet below to deal with the empty class attr:

    if ( 0 == (int)$forum_template->topic->topic_open ):
    $class .= ' closed';
    else:
    $class .= ' open';
    endif;

    and commented out the functions if($forum_template ->current_topic … $class .= ‘alt’ leaving the jQuery snippet to deal with alt class as in the short term it’s easier to let jQuery deal with this rather than $class hopefully when it’s sorted one or another changes should silently overwrite with no impact.

    !.4??? we haven’t arrived at 1.3 yet and currently waiting on 1.2.5 being finalised and tagged

    and I did see alt on each tr earler now don’t! but do see an empty class on the even rows, no matter logged in or out. (did update the checkout to revision 3102)

    TBH I would always choose to do this sort of thing server side rather than client side via the likes of jQuery – as much as I like playing with jQuery.

    One last thing to consider with the two approaches to zebra striping:

    With the decedent selector approach you rely on the correct markup being written; with an app such as WP or BP this has a drawback due to people being able to write less well structured markup in a plugin and perhaps omitting such elements as tbody (surprising how few can actually construct tables with all the full set of elements and attributes)

    The tr:nth-child approach has the slight benefit that it doesn’t look to the markup stucture for necessary parents or ancestors, simply working on an element that must exist.

    @hnla

    Participant

    @johnjamesjacoby revisiting it all I realise that the jQuery snippet was stating apply class to tbody>tr and yes that actually does work quite hapily and on the notification screen, which again makes me wonder what the original problem was as there definitely was one , if it was simply another statement somewhere conflicting that’s fair enough.

    It appears to be ok now, but it is still generating an empty class attribute on the even rows which would look better if it were killed.

    Edit/ empty class attribute appears to be only on the forum component screen? oh and on group forum screen

    @hnla

    Participant

    @Johnjamesjacoby your @mention name is too long :)

    Erm I don’t really get what has gone wrong with this as I stated on that ticket of Jeff’s that I tested and all was ok now I look at the install that I made those changes on and see that all tr receive ‘alt’ which I wouldn’t have missed on initial testing so somewhat puzzled!

    One thing could you change it from ‘odd’ to ‘even’ as Jeff’s point was pertinent it’s rather annoying to class the th parent tr with ‘alt’ or use my snippet and add a class specif to parents of th elements so we can easily remove/change styling, not that it’s the best approach.

    @hnla

    Participant

    @johnjamesjacoby how fixed it in a different way? it appears somewhat borked now? I thought Jeff’s patch worked well for me in testing but now am confused as removing that couple of lines in global.js shows that the alt class is being applied from elsewhere?

    In forums component logged out or in I have an empty class on one tr

    @hnla

    Participant

    @johnjamesjacoby I noted that you closed the ticket Jeff raised on the alt striping class in line ~822 so I assumed it had been added but checking the 1.2.5 branch default themes _inc/global.js doesn’t show it?

    CVS is vital for projects, and I had once pushed for using SVN on a web app project but was overruled by the rest of the team as they thought it would be too confusing! I was proved right and they regretted not implementing it. If I ever have cause to implement a CVS in the future I’ll probably be looking at GIT As at first glance it does seem one whole heap less confusing than SVN and like the decentralized approach.

    The branch Installed with no issues despite having activated bleeding edge, deactivating it, removing bleeding edge folder, replacing with branch and reactivating, alf expected that to cause issues in the DB but at initial test all seems to be fine.
