    @deltina –

    Thanks for the compliment.

    @arxpoetica –

    I can see that you are passionate about this issue. It is good to see more people raise the banner of distributed open source social networks. Do you have much experience with Semantic Web protocols?
    __________

    An update on what I’ve been doing with regards to this issue:

    I’ve been holding secret, high-level discussions in my ancient, giant sloth cave about how the BP community should go about implementing SemWeb protocols in BuddyPress. Well, it seems like I’ve been in a cave as it has been difficult to get people excited about the prospects of bringing the Semantic Web to BP as most do not yet understand the benefits. Fortunately, there is a small but growing group of people that are excited, that do understand the virtues of semantifying BP. @DJPaul and I plan to look into the best approaches to tackle the overall issue of BP semantification. He has also attracted another developer to join the cause.

    There are more people starting to take interest as well. I spent part of today discussing with Henry Story the prospects of using BuddyPress as a test case platform for brining a solid Semantic Web implementation to an open source social networking project. One of the first projects might be a SSO (single sign on) plugin using WebIDs.

    So, strides are being made, albeit small ones at this time. It is not clear whether WP / BP can be crafted to become a fully-functioning distributed social networking platform but it is the best place to start.

    The theme for BP.org is not available. Andy created it specifically for this site. Here’s an old thread when BP.org had a different theme that explains Andy’s philosophy on this matter: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/the-theme-for-this-site/

    As @sushkov states, the issue of spam in BuddyPress is currently being discussed in depth. Please search before you create a new thread. There are many threads on the same topic. Creating a new one does not help.

    You are correct. It is not ready to run on WP 2.9.x and BP 1.2.x. As this issue has been discussed in a number of other threads, your best option is to contact the authors directly. You will not get any support here.

    BP-FBConnect plugin has not been upgraded to work with WP 2.9.2 or the BP 1.2.x series. This is why you’re having issues. See the requirements section on the right: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-fbconnect/

    Contact the plugin author and ask when this plugin will be updated.

    How did you install BP? BuddyPress needs to live in the /plugins directory, nowhere else. First, if your site is live, if it is a production site that has data you need to save, then make sure you have completely backed up your database and all files before beginning. If your site is a test site, a development site with no data worth saving, then you can skip that step.

    Next, deactivate all plugins except BuddyPress. Then deactivate BuddyPress. Next, remove BuddyPress from the /plugins directory. Manually download and reinstall BuddyPress following the directions provided in the readme.txt file.

    It’s possible that someday WordPress.com will provide their users with an option to install BuddyPress on their blogs (for an additional fee, I imagine). But until that happens, your only choice is as @hnla has stated–running your own copy of BP on a self-hosted WP install.

    @sadr-

    I’m not sure as to which developers you’re referring? There are only three core developers that work on BuddyPress and two of them are volunteers like the rest of us non-core developers. Andy, as the only core BP developer that is employed by Automattic, is charged with working on BuddyPress. He does not necessarily have any additional information–than can be googled–on what Automatic plans to do with bbPress.

    The big differentiator between diaspora and BuddyPress is that WP / BP is a centralized platforms. diaspora’s goal is to make distributed social networking the norm. We briefly had a discussion about this in this thread: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/creating-extending/forum/topic/alternative-to-facebook/

    @jackreichert-

    If you are asking where to start in helping turn WP / BP into a distributed social networking platform, I cannot say. That is currently not in the works. It would require a major rewriting of WordPress’ foundational core. If you are asking about the project I reference in my post, then it’s best to email me separately as that is beyond scope for the BuddyPress forums.

    But, there may be a middle ground. A few of us are in the beginning stages of thinking about semantifying BuddyPress with the possible goal of enabling BP to use WebIDs as an alternative to OpenID, and to encode other semantic markup to enable BP networks to join the growing number of Linked Data applications.

    The issue of spam will be one of the topics discussed at this week’s dev chat on Wednesday. There should be more to report after that chat.

    You are correct. Please read my article I linked to in my first post in this thread.

    @jackreichert-

    There are a few of us “Semantic Web / Linked Data” folk who are kicking around ideas to semantify BuddyPress. As far as turning WP into a distributed platform, that is too far beyond scope and would require a major rewriting of the foundational code.

    The issue of spam registration and posting is well discussed. If you want to learn more about some proposed measures, please read this thread: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/requests-feedback/forum/topic/here-come-the-spammers/

    Are you sure the data is not being added? It appears that your function is firing. Do you mean to say instead that the saved data does not get displayed after the function has fired?

    There is nothing in the few lines of code you’ve pasted above that would make your data_to_add() work when hooked to the wp action event but not the bp_activity_posted_update action event. Since both events get fired and subsequently fire your added action function, the data should be written to the DB in either case.

    @jeffsayre

    The “Action Event Firing Order” is an array that holds all action hooks that will be fired. Since your function data_to_add does not have a hook–i.e. it does not have a do_action( ‘data_to_add’); call–there will be nothing in that array. So, that is fine.

    But, it does seem that the action event bp_activity_posted_update is firing your hooked to action function. The next step is to make sure that you are attaching to, hooking into, the proper action event hook. The hook bp_activity_posted_update passes three parameters, so hooking your custom function to it is not the best idea, unless you are trying to modify any of those three parameters. What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

    You must also set your default language in WPMU’s wp-config.php file. Look for the following line in that file:

    define ('WPLANG', '');

    @jeffsayre

    It sounds like you may have a hook sequence firing issue. In other words, your added action function might not be getting fired. This could be an issue with your code or even the BuddyPress code.

    You can download my plugin WordPress Hook Sniffer to see if that might be the case. It takes awhile to figure out how to use my plugin but the two articles I wrote should guide you through the process.

    As @r-a-y suggests, these look like spam accounts to me.

    Do you have any errors in the log files?

    I assume that you are passing data into your function of the proper type. If so, then the next issue is to determine if the save method is receiving the data and if it’s provided in the way in which it expects. The example save method in the Skeleton Component is coded to accept all integer data and no string data. This is why I asked if you are passing the proper data type to the method for each field.

    Your log files and some custom debugging strings should help figure this out pretty easily.

    Boone is correct. A distributed (sometimes also called decentralized) network is when data are kept in different places, places that each user (be that an individual, group, or company) controls. WPMU, Twitter, Facebook, etcetera control the users’ data and experience. Although the data may be spread throughout a series of servers or even distributed server clusters, the data is controlled by one authority and is often considered locked into a closed data silo–even if that data silo is hosted in the cloud.

    For more details on distributed social networking (with a Semantic Web twist) see my article, A Flock of Twitters: Decentralized Semantic Microblogging.

    First of all, we may need more information. If what I suggest below does not resolve your issue, then please answer these questions: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/when-asking-for-support/

    The error message that you have posted is strange. BuddyPress does not have a file called bp-cores.php. You mentioned that you made some file modifications. Did you open up the file bp-loader.php? I would look in that file on line 19 to see if you accidentally added an “s” to bp-core. Line 19 should read:

    require_once( WP_PLUGIN_DIR . '/buddypress/bp-core.php' );

    If you see that there is an “s” but you are sure that you did not change it yourself, I would suggest deactivating then deleting BuddyPress. Then redownload BuddyPress and reinstall. Make sure your are downloading BuddyPress from this site

    Finally, when trying to debug BuddyPress, always use the default theme and deactivate all other plugins. You need to isolate what is happening within BuddyPress.
