In reply to: Recommended Hosting for BuddyPress site?

If you’re having bandwidth issues, make sure that you are doing everything you can to optimize your setup. Here are some useful suggestions: https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/improving-performance/
@techguy-
If someone wants to start a group, that would be fine.
In reply to: Performance issues – related to number of usersI assume you’re at least on a decent-sized VPS / slice of some sort, or perhaps a dedicated server. A healthy, growing WPMU + BuddyPress install is not something that will do well in a shared environment or a small VPS / slice–at least not when you’re talking about 3000+ active members. Both of these applications under heavy use can require higher allocated memory limit for PHP. That is not unusual. Here are some other steps you can take to improve performance: https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/improving-performance/

Also, you’ve already posted this same question in this thread 6 hours ago ( https://buddypress.org/community/groups/creating-extending/forum/topic/is-wp-fb-autoconnect-broken/ ). Please do not cross post. If you’re question has not had a reply within 24 hours, either bump the thread or then you can start a new thread and refer back to the old one.
I’m closing this thread and leave the other open.
There are a number of threads on this topic.
In reply to: What Buddypress & WordPress blogs do you follow?Okay, since we’re all pimping ourselves here, I have quite a few articles on BuddyPress on my blog as well http://jeffsayre.com/
In reply to: I have a problem ! Can you tell me what’s wrongIt’s a little hard to believe that with the issues you’re reporting that you have zero errors in your server’s log files. Did you manually install the 3rd-party plugins or use WP’s autoinstaller?
I would suggest reinstalling everything manually–including BP. You can start off first with just trying to manually reinstall the 3rd-party plugins. Before doing so, make sure that you first deactivated them. Then delete them from your /plugins folder. Next, download each plugin from the WP Plugin Repo and manually install and activate one at a time. Make sure that you reinstall them in your /plugins folder.
If you are still having issues, then start from scratch. This means deactivating all plugins including BuddyPress. Then, manually download, install, and activate BuddyPress. Next, reinstall the plugins one more time. Install each of them one by one with activating and testing each one before installing and activating the next.

Please do not cross post. You’ve asked the same questions in this post. Someone will answer you. Please be patient. Also, for everyone’s information, as this is an all-volunteer support forum, do not bump a post until 24 hours have passed.
In reply to: How to install buddypressAlso, read the readme.txt file that comes with the BuddyPress download package. It tells you everything you need to know. Of course, if you’re using the autoinstall feature from the plugin browser in WP’s backend, then you may not even know about the readme.txt file.
In reply to: Remove “are now friends” from activity streamMost of you probably know my thoughts on the issue of plugin developer remuneration (suffice it to say, that less then 0.1% of people who have downloaded my plugins donate. Yes, that is 0.1%, not 1%.) But, this thread has gone off topic. So, please let’s get back on topic. If someone wishes to create a new thread about the importance of donating to plugin developers, that would be swell.
In reply to: Buddy Press disables gallery – how do I fix?In reply to: Changing BuddyPress Base URLThe “members” slug, as it is called, is also autogenerated and does not represent an actual, physical space. The easiest way to do this would be to change the slug to “usa/members”. See this article, https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/changing-internal-configuration-settings/ , and scroll down to the section entitled “Change the URL slugs of BuddyPress components”
Basically, you would add this to the wp-config.php file. Having never tried adding a forward slash to a slug, I’n not sure if it will be stripped out, but on the surface, I can’t think of why that should not work:
define ( 'BP_MEMBERS_SLUG', 'usa/members' );

In reply to: Plugin/Functionality Idea: Buddypress ’My Stuff’@stwc-
I definitely see the desirability of a “User’s Dashboard” as you describe. Although there are ways for a user to accomplish some of what you’re suggesting in the current, default setup, it is not intuitive nor necessarily that easy. Any service that can help users better organize, manage, and track their growing data stream would be a hit.

Thanks for starting this thread. I know this issue will become more relevant once WP 3.0 is released and people start realizing the potential.
In reply to: Here come the spammers!!!@foxly-
This is a very nice summary of the problem. Thank you for providing the introduction to the various attack vectors spammers currently use.
I would argue, as you know, that WP / BP also needs to combat registration spam–even though it is the hardest issue to address. There area a number of BP.org members that are looking for a solution, however imperfect, that will noticeably reduce spam signups. If a person is infected with a small viral load, the resulting illness often will not be as severe as if they had received a large dose of invading organisms. The same can be said with website spam signups. Any reduction is better than none.
But, as this is your thread and I do not want to take your thread off topic (or have others do what I just did
), I will ask that we table that discussion for another thread at another time and focus in this thread on solutions to combating spam once a spam account has successfully registered.Once again, this is a great start to the conversation.
As Paul said, you need to distill your environment down to the least common denominator. Switch to the default BP theme and make sure you do not have any other plugins besides BP activated. If the problem goes away, then it has something to do with your theme, one of your installed plugins, or a combination of both.
The next step, then, is to figure out what is causing the problem. So, first switch back to your custom theme. If your site still runs without issue, then it is one or more of your plugins. If the site breaks, then it is your theme. If the theme seems fine, then start reactivating one plugin at a time until the problem returns.
Also, you should look in your server’s log files to see if there are any clues as to what might be going on.
In reply to: bp_user_link doesn’t work anymore?Which version of BP are you running? Where have you placed your code? I have not checked to see if bp_user_link() has been deprecated, but it is easy enough to do a global search and find out.
By the way, you use the “code” tag enclosed within angled brackets to display code. Just close the code tag after you’re finshed:
function example() {
// do something here
}
In reply to: when release of BP 1.2.4BP v1.2.4 will be released within the next 2 weeks. More than likely sooner than later.
@qbuster, as far as seeing a “beta”, you can always check out the bleeding-edge version from svn trunk. It is the version that with a few more tickets closed, will be tagged as v1.2.4.
In reply to: Blank pages after upgrading to 1.2.3Did you delete the old theme files (bp-default and bp-sn-parent) from the directory?
Did you have any other BP-plugins installed and activated?
