    Ah, I understand!

    Perhaps once the privacy component is in place, you’ll have most (all?) of the pieces you need to accomplish your design / functionality goals. Of course, if a member of a group decided that they did not want their membership in that group displayed (made available) to non-members, then that would not meet your stated goal.

    As JFcarter suggests, you should make a backup of your database before beginning this process. Your BuddyPress data should be in the same DB as your WPMU data. You also may have some image files in other locations, so back those up as well. Finally, be carful of what you delete in wp-content. If you have any customized themes, or 3rd-party plugins, you will want to make sure you have a backup just in case.

    Now, upgrading WPMU: Unless this issue has been recently fixed, you cannot use the auto update feature to upgrade WPMU 2.7.1-beta1 to the public release version of WPMU 2.7.1. This is because the upgrade script “sees” WPMU 2.7.1 = WPMU 2.7.1, meaning it does not upgrade you from beta1 since it thinks you are already running 2.7.1.

    So, you need to do the old manual upgrade of WPMU following these procedures.

    Upgrading BuddyPress: follow these instructions.

    Why don’t you paste your base code (bp-xxx.php) and the bp-xxx-cssjs.php code into a pastebin so that several of us can take a look–that is if you don’t mind showing parts of your code. I have not had issues using:

    $bp->example->image_base = WP_PLUGIN_URL . '/bp-xxx/images';

    to load images.

    We are working on a proper privacy component for BuddyPress that will allow for a given member to decide how much of their personal data they want to expose to the world. This not only includes their profile data, but also a member’s data contained in the other BuddyPress components.

    As far as group-specific privacy control, that is also an area we are discussing.

    You can install my Featured Members Widget for BuddyPress: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-featured-members-widget/

    You can make a backup on your server, just give it a .bak extension or something different than the active file.

    After backing up, you should be able to delete all the old lines. It’s basically a big text file. Nothing will break. Of course, if for some bizarre reason it does, you have that backup file that you can simply rename and put back in place!

    Well, the skeleton uses WP_PLUGIN_URL because custom components should not run in the /buddypress/ directory. Since BP_PLUGIN_URL is defined in bp-core.php (line 9):

    define( 'BP_PLUGIN_URL', WP_PLUGIN_URL . '/buddypress' );

    if you use BP_PLUGIN_URL, it will be pathed incorrectly.

    So, the question is this: Where do you have your custom component installed? It should be in /plugins/ and not /plugins/buddypress/

    I would like to install buddypress onto my existing wordpress install (regular wordpress not wordpress mu).

    At this time, BuddyPress only works with WPMU 2.7.1. You cannot use it with single-version WordPress.

    How would I upgrade this to a wordpress mu/buddypress install?

    https://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic.php?id=11126

    will this integrate with my current wordpress theme

    No. You will either need to use the standard BuddyPress themes that come with the package, or update your custom themes as detailed here: https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/installing-buddypress/upgrading-from-rc-1/

    Oaky, I think I made a little error. Assuming that you set “WP_PLUGIN_URL” in bp-example.php (your base file which obviously has a different name), then try this:

    site_url( WP_PLUGIN_URL . '/heart_bullet.png' )

    This assumes that you set WP_PLUGIN_URL = ‘/bp-example/images’

    @jeffsayre

    Ah yes, it was in there before. I didn’t have my copy of v1.1 to reference. Try WP_PLUGIN_DIR instead of MUPLUGINDIR.

    Okay, thanks for the updated information. From those error messages, it appears that PHP is having trouble saving session information. This will cause big issues. However, this is not a BuddyPress nor WordPress-specific issue. This is an issue with your web server.

    I suggest that you contact your web hosting firm and ask them to help you.

    I\’m sorry that it has taken so long to reply to your question. I\’ve been on the road and have only had an hour here and there.

    What I do not like in my solution: I had to modify the core files…

    Well, as you know, it is never a good idea to modify core files. Have you tried using this:

    bp_the_site_member()

    in place of this:

    bp_the_site_member_name()

    I do not have the BP core files open right now so I’m just taking a guess here.

    SQRR-

    Firstly, a big thx to Jeff for the component skeleton!

    Your welcome! But Andy deserves the most credit. I just helped to update it.

    So, let me make sure that I understand your issue. You’ve registered your custom component using an add_action( 'bp_nav_items', ..., ...); to add a button (or tab as you’re calling it) to the navigation array. It works fine in your member’s theme but not your home theme.

    Is this correct?

    Are you using a customized home theme?

    Have you checked to make sure the header.php file in your home theme has this line?

    <?php do_action( 'bp_nav_items' ); ?>

    Do you have issues when trying to Add or Edit any other widgets?

    Have you made code changes to this particular widget?

    I’m thinking the solution for that would be the same for me?

    That could be the same issue. Let’s wait for Andy to addresses this issue and then see if your issue clears up as well.

    Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. I’m on the road and in meetings most this week.

    As far as I remember, I do not think there ever was specific code for showing that image.

    Thank you for your contribution.

    Have you checked the BuddyPress Language Translations Codex pages here? https://codex.buddypress.org/translations/

    There is another Vietnamese translation of BuddyPress.

    Amyuk and Dworldon-

    A few initial questions:

    1. Are you logging into WPMU\’s backend as the site administrator, and not just as a user with administrator privileges?
    2. Did you go to \”BuddyPress > General Settings\”, re-select the member theme, and then hit save? Do this even if the theme is already selected.
    3. Are there any errors in your log files? If so, what are they?

    How can we turn this into a brainstorming session, where at the end of it, all of us get what we need and we can release it to the community?

    Dainismichel-

    Since this thread was started by another person and it seems like several solutions have already been presented, your best option to turn this topic into a brainstorming session will be to start a new thread. Just make sure you give it a different name!

    Also, clearly explain your initial ideas and what you would like to accomplish in the thread–your thread goals.

    I look forward to the discussion!

    Jeff, I tried installing Nicola’s plugins on a clean BP installation but some of them seem to break my plugins page and then make the database dirty

    I would contact Nicola via his bp-dev.org site and discuss this issue with him. I know that he has recently upgraded many of his plugins. Your feedback will help him make his plugins even better!
