First of all, I would recommend copying the Recent Blog Posts widget and modifying the copy. Otherwise, the next time you upgrade BuddyPress, your changes will be gone. When done, place your new widget in /mu-plugins/. Call it something different so that you can easily recognize it in WPMU’s backend.

    Okay, now the code changes:

    1. How can I limit the excerpt in the widget

If you look in that widget, you’ll see that the function bp_create_excerpt() is called to create the excerpt. This function is located in bp-core-templatetags.php. The number of characters is determined in the function’s arguments.

Copy that function, place it in your new widgets file, and rename it. Change the number of characters to your desired limit. Then make sure you reference the new function instead

    2. Is there anything I can do to exclude the main blog from this widget?

In the widget, the fucntion bp_blogs_get_latest_posts() is called. This function is located in bp-blogs.php. It relies on a method get_latest_posts() located in bp-blogs-classes.php.

Thinking out loud, I suppose you could set up a variable that excludes the Admin blog and pass it as a parameter into the bp_blogs_get_latest_posts(). The other option is to create a custom class and method and rewrite the query to exclude the main blog.

Haven’t tried either. So, I’m not sure the best approach.

Try hardcoding a user number, say “2”, in there and see what happens. Just a test.

Yes. I would highly recommend upgrading to version 1.0. It is considered the first, stable, public release. This means that it can now be used on live, production sites.

There were a few bug fixes and some nice improvements since RC2. You can visit BuddyPress trac and see for yourself! All the changesets after r1407 came after RC2.

Okay, two things. First, you need to echo out the statement. Second, you need to supply the user’s id. I usually place the current user ID in a variable I call $memberID.

    <?php echo bp_core_get_username( bp_the_site_member_user_id($memberID) ); ?>

Try that out and let me know how it goes!

You probably did not get any response concerning this issue since it is a WPMU plugin-specific problem and not BuddyPress.

If you have specific questions about a given WPMU plugin, the best place to ask them is usually on the WPMU forum. In fact, the creator of the WP Super Cache plugin, Donncha, will be more likley to see your question there than here!

Welcome to BuddyPress! I’m sorry it has taken this long to answer your question.

First let me answer this question:

do i need to edit the bp-core component and bp-xprofile too?

You should not edit any of the core BuddyPress components as your changes will be lost the next time you update BP. Instead, you can either take advantage of the bp-custom.php file (detailed here), or create your own custom component.

can someone expalin me the use of bp-xprofile component.

Here’s some information on BuddyPress’ profile features that may help answer this question.

also, i want to create my own component

There is a specially-created tool for this called the BuddyPress Skeleton Component for plugin developers. Using this series of files, you can create your own custom BP component. There is a download link on that page.

I hope you don’t think I was being snooty to you. Your issue was simply not clear to me.

Anyway, I now understand that you want the entire screen to be constrained to exactly 800 pixels in width, that you do not want the Buddy bar to be resized upon screen resizing.

There are a few ways to accomplish this. But, the best way is to create a CSS selector that will override the selector in the core file.

If you go to the admin-bar-logo.css file and look at the #wp-admin-bar selector, you’ll see that it has a width property set to 100%. This needs to be changed to your desired fixed width. But, do not change it within this file because it will be lost upon the next BuddyPress upgrade.

Instead, you place your custom CSS in the site-wide-sample.css file found in the BuddyPress-home/css directory. You must rename that file to site-wide.css. Now, your custom CSS selector will override the core BP CSS. Here’s what you’ll place in that file:

    #wp-admin-bar { width: 800px !important; }

By the way, do you use Firebug with Firefox? If you don’t, it is a great tool. It not only allows you to find out within which files certain CSS selectors are located, but also to temporarily change them and see what impact they have on the design.

    I hope this helps!

I’m not entirely sure if I understand your issue with the Buddy bar. It is set so that it automatically resizes if you reduce the width of your browser’s window.

Give it a try. Drag the bottom, right corner of your browser window to the left, thus making the browser window narrower. The Buddy bar “resizes” as you narrow the window.

Any update on this issue? Did you try deactivating all other plugins and see what happens?

    Speaking to this issue:

why does my username in the forums say i am ‘inactive’

It is a known bug in bbPress. Everyone sees their own status as “Inactive” and everyone else’s as “Member” or “Moderator”.

I just look at it as a little nudge to get more involved. ;)

Yeah, hacking core files is never a good idea. That is why there’s a slick, simple solution!

Place all your custom code in a file called bp-custom.php. It should be located in /wp-content/plugins/ not in the BuddyPress directory. This file will load before the BuddyPress components load.

The file has to be named bp-custom.php and placed where I indicated.

Now, when you update BuddyPress, since your custom code exists outside of the BuddyPress directory, you’ll be fine.

Other than BuddyPress, what other plugins are you running? Try deactivating all but your BuddyPress plugins and see what happens.

    Some initial questions:

    1. Which versions of WPMU and BuddyPress are you running?
    2. Did you make any modifications to core BuddyPress files?
    3. Do you have custom code in bp-custom.php that attempts to modify the admin bar?
    4. Are there any errors in the error logs? If so, what are they?

I hope that TMD works well for you!

Incidentally, I noticed that their BuddyPress tutorial is out of date. They have not been keeping up with the changes in theme directories. Also, they state that:

As an addon to the official WordPress MU, BuddyPress is fully compatible with all the plugins and themes of WordPress and does not limit its functionality in any way

This is not true. There are several incorrect statements there. For instance, there are a number of steps that must be taken if you are using a custom WordPress theme with BuddyPress. I hope they’re good at tech support!

Look in directories.css for the CSS selector “letter-list” It inherits the font color.

Are you using FireFox to develop? If not, I’d highly recommend using FireFox with the FIreBug Add-on. You can see all the CSS stuff and much more. You can even temporarily try changing values and see what happens.
