I ran into the same problem and have gone through the functions’ roles to find an answer. Unfortunately, I don’t have a solution.
forum-attachments-for-buddypress-bp-functions.php
lines 46-51.
`global $bb_attachments, $bp;
$bb_attachments=”read”; // minimum role to see list of attachments = read/participate/moderate/administrate
$bb_attachments=”read”; // minimum role to view inline reduced images = read/participate/moderate/administrate
$bb_attachments=”read”; // minimum role to download original = read/participate/moderate/administrate
$bb_attachments=”participate”; // minimum role to upload = participate/moderate/administrate (times out with post edit time)
$bb_attachments=”moderate”; // minimum role to delete = read/participate/moderate/administrate`Obviously do not want to give upload moderate or administrate to everyone …
Next, the plugin Members was installed, edited “Subscribers” to have upload_files capability and still no joy.
In reply to: Installed Template Pack Now I have A White ScreenAs hnla suggested, the topic is covered extensively on these forums. You can try a search using, ‘white screen’ (https://buddypress.org/search/?f=white+screen)
Before going too far, you might try to increase the php memory limit via the wp-config.php file first. If your host allows it, you can also change the setting in the .htaccess.

In reply to: Forum replies not threaded in activity streamThank you for answering @r-a-y
My hope is that the new bbpress plugin is released in Q1/Q2 and then there can be better integration with the activity stream. Personally, they should go both ways – a reply in the stream should go to the forum and a reply in the forum should go to the stream (threaded)….
OK…I read through the codex…but it still doesn’t solve my problem of why when I click on register, it directs me back to a home page.
Most likely you are logged into your site when you are trying that address. I was able to reach your registration page with the link http://exaholics.com/register/
In reply to: Just Installed – links aren’t working@hnla –

@clarki and @somethingforkaty – these are not BP issues but permalinks in WP. Go to your admin panel and set the permalinks. See step 3 here: https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/setting-up-a-new-installation/
Here is the information on “pretty” permalinks: https://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks
Watch the .htaccess after permalinks set in /wp-admin
In reply to: 2 remaining problemsYou have WP 3.0.1 but please post the BP version as well as the .htaccess that you have in the root.
Found the problem – but don’t have a fix

When W3-Total Cache is enabled then the download for the ppt is corrupted. Disabled the caching plugin and the download works properly.
Now, I just need to find the fix.
Uploaded all PowerPoints in .ppt format through /wp-admin, added dl links to a post, and they all work. There must be something in that download portion of the bb-attachments plugin that is causing a corruption. Here are the files available for dl.
OK. Tried several different configurations and finally discovered that any ppt that is opened in Office 2010 and saved as ppt has the same problem described. The ppt will upload properly but upon download the file will not open in Office 2010.
Hmm.. Now I am really confused. I can upload other ppt files created by the students and it works. I copied the first one tried to a whole new ppt and uploaded it to a whole new thread – and the download of the file failed. Crazy. Something in that file is just not liked.
Uploaded pptx file format and this downloads properly.
The plugin “Tamper Data” shows the correct content-type set for the download as well as the transfer as “binary” …
In reply to: Pagination rather than ”Load More”BP 1.2.6 updated but pagination fails.

Clicking on the link does not change the page, however, I can right-click on the link and open it in a tab or window and the new page loads.

In reply to: WP Tuner: Data are showing bottlenecksNice website!
“Congratulations, your HTML is compressed to 4.18 kb (72% size savings). Your page is successfully using gzip compression on your code. This helps ensure a faster loading web page and improved user experience.”
In reply to: WP Tuner: Data are showing bottlenecksIt is a great plugin.
Optimized table helped a little.
W3-Total Cache was installed weeks ago but the site is on RackSpaceCloud and they suggest not using database caching. Will enable though to see what happens. GZip compression is enabled but I’ve never verified.
Update: Turns out database caching was enabled on W3. Once disabled then the results are far better:
wp_usermeta 72 79 199.1 193
Narrowed this down to the thesis child theme. A change to the default theme allows the stream to show and groups to be created – however – the “home” link is wrong and tries to go to /news.
Why not upgrade to 1.2.6 when it becomes available in a few days or download the zip for the branch here and test it to see if it works for your site with those plugins. Alternatively, update the plugins to work with the latest BP version.
In reply to: Beginners QuestionsWP 3.0.1 would be the best install with BuddyPress 1.2.6 (released this coming weekend).
But before walking through too much detail, is there a reason you want BuddyPress on a subdomain? Is WordPress installed on the main domain?
Now, it is possible to install BP and have members create blogs using subdomains .. but maybe you have a different purpose for putting the whole community on the subdomain .. which is also possible.
There are a growing number of great themes for BuddyPress:
http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/buddypress-magazine-theme
Also, you can take any WP theme and modify it to match the community by using the template pack.
In reply to: next version of bp@hnla – installed the branch the other day and pagination still doesn’t work on the activity stream. Decided to look at the way I had it done in the child theme but am not done.
In reply to: Subscribers Can PostPlease provide more information about your setup so that people can help you.
In reply to: Avatar Not DisplayingYou really need to supply more information about your BP installation.
In the meantime, did you try to upload an avatar again using a different browser?
In reply to: Getting Avatar to displayIf you wouldn’t mind, is it possible to provide more information for what you are trying to achieve?
In reply to: Zlib compressionYes, enabling zlib compression by placing code in the header.php of a child theme will improve performance.
`<?php
ini_set(’zlib.output_compression’, ‘On’);
ini_set(’zlib.output_compression_level’, ‘1?);
?>`Source: WPMU.org
Additionally, you could enable W3-Total Cache as a plugin and gain other benefits, ie. CDN, Minify, database caching, object caching, browser caching, and user agent groups.
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/w3-total-cache/
You cannot do both the plugin and the enabling of zlib compression in the header
