Sorry – this should have gone into the “How-To” Group … might want to move it …
In reply to: buddypress with wordpress 3.0.1You might try to disable all of the plugins then enable them one at a time to see which one is conflicting with the admin area. Also, if you have access to the error log files then you can check to see if a message is being written to the logs.
In reply to: New Sliding AJAX Login Panel Plugin for BuddyPressThank you. Yes – turning off the speakers was a good idea
In reply to: New Sliding AJAX Login Panel Plugin for BuddyPressIs there a link to a demo of this plugin?
In reply to: Syncing with friendfeedFor Blog postings, you might try Glenn Slaven’s plugin. I haven’t tried it with WP 3.0.
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/friendfeed-comments/
You could also go with Disqus or Intense Debate … to synch comments in blog postings.
For activity stream … I have not tried this … but … use tweestream to sync between site and twitter, use FriendFeed tool to keep twitter and FriendFeed synchronized … that should do the trick at the basic level.
In reply to: CDN with W3-Total-Cache & CloudFrontOK. Even Frederick was trying to help tonight but I ended up giving up. In about 5 minutes, I was able to order, confirm, and setup MaxCDN. The site is now being mirrored and works like a charm. I’m not sure what the problem with Amazon’s CloudFront is …
CDN is much faster, though. It’s a nice touch
In reply to: Line 186 bp-activity-classes.php – SELECT *Thank you. It’s all about learning
In reply to: Moodle@Jalien – no problem. I’m a complete novice – even after 15 + years I make huge mistakes and have to squint at the screen for long hours to figure out why something isn’t working
In reply to: Line 186 bp-activity-classes.php – SELECT *Figures I’d use the wrong word “tables” versus “fields” … I knew what I meant .. but am clearly a novice

OK. I was reading that SELECT * is taxing on the server and it’s better to specify the “fields” .. so in that statement … are all the fields required?
Thanks Jeff for the link. In fact, in that example:
SELECT Company, Country FROM Customers WHERE Country ‘USA’
See how they don’t use SELECT * but SELECT Company, Country … that’s really my question for learning today
In reply to: Integrating buddypress in my themeDo you have a link for us?

Did you set this up?
In reply to: How to combine js files and cs filesdomain.com/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=w3-total-cache/w3-total-cache.php
The development version provides a nice list of links across the top.
General | Page Cache | Minify | Database Cache | Object Cache | Browser Cache | User Agent Groups | Content Delivery Network | FAQ | Support | Install | About
Choose Minify to combine the js and css scripts.
In reply to: Can’t delete userSweet
In reply to: Can’t delete userAnyway, it looks like $this is being used improperly.
$group_ids = $this->get_group_ids( $user_id );
http://php.syntaxerrors.info/index.php?title=Using_$this_when_not_in_object_context
It’s a php4 versus php5 issue … but … hopefully a programmer can help here.
In reply to: Can’t delete userI can’t help much (hopefully others will chime in here) but the error comes from this function:
function delete_all_for_user( $user_id ) {
global $wpdb, $bp;// Get all the group ids for the current user’s groups and update counts
$group_ids = $this->get_group_ids( $user_id );
foreach ( $group_ids->groups as $group_id ) {
groups_update_groupmeta( $group_id, ‘total_member_count’, groups_get_total_member_count( $group_id ) – 1 );
}return $wpdb->query( $wpdb->prepare( “DELETE FROM {$bp->groups->table_name_members} WHERE user_id = %d”, $user_id ) );
}In reply to: MoodleThe new BuddyPress Courseware I’m working on, will kick ass, I wouldn’t even bother testing moodle
I look forward to your plugin. Moodle was adopted by our school district last year. Best wishes on your plugin and hope that it is better than Moodle, because it takes a long time to tweak it. Let me know if you ever want someone to help test it for you or give you feature feedback.
In reply to: MoodleHappy to help. I’ll try to give a little detail of the gotchas.
1. Go to http://moodle.schoolsict.net/2010/04/21/db-authentication-with-phpass-integrating-wordpress/ and read their directions. Download their files.
2. Backup your files and database
3. Upload the /auth/db files you downloaded from schoolsict
4. Go to phpmyadmin and create the views provided by schoolsict: now here is the trick. They wanted mdl_firstname2 to be created .. and this didn’t work for me. Instead, I changed all of the “xxx2” to “xxx” and after the 4 views are created then you’ll want to verify that the data are showing in the views.
5. Go to your moodle install, login, and follow the directions on schoolsict to setup the external database.
6. Modify /user/editlib.php and comment out city/county $mforms around lines 198 and 204 …
7. Change the Moodle settings for users to “student” and not “authenticated”
Test, test, and retest.
Hope this helps.
In reply to: The Chemistry BookI know – you are probably sick of updates – but what’s more fun than creating something from nothing?
So here goes the latest:
Number 1:
Moodle is now operational – the login ID is now tied to the WordPress login. Students no longer need to register twice – but only once. The same login ID and password used at the front of the site is the same as the moodle account.Number 2:
Theme changes to moodle so that the Wiki and WP are available from the top navigation.Number 3: (and this one is cool!)
http://www.thechembook.com/wiki/index.php/StudyStack
This is an embedded PDF containing links to the vocabulary students are to memorize. If the student clicks on the link then the vocabulary loads – and provides an opportunity for the kids to play hangman, solve a crossword puzzle, etc.
Number 4: (boring nerd stuff)
BuddyPress was updated to the latest stable version – with some additional plugins and edits. Theme changes in Moodle and MediaWiki to accept the navigation. Embed plugin for PDFs and web into the Wiki.Bragging stuff:
Yep, over one-half million page views on this site since it’s launch. Oh – and a friend did a great job showing the site in Texas at the HP conference.What could possibly be left? Glad you asked!
1. The photos album is going to be expanded. I can’t wait for the BP Album + …
2. Bug fixes: I suspect once kids start using this thing again – they’ll find problems and want things changed.
3. Embed learning guides so they do not need to be downloaded.
4. Performance on BuddyPress is really poor. This is due to RackSpace, their MA and lack of being able to use expired headers and gzip. I cannot use minify either. This causes plugin errors to crop up. These problems are supposed to be fixed in W3-Total-Cache next release.
5. More content! Yes. While there are over 550 articles, so much detail is missing. So lets hope I can convince kids to actually add more content
In reply to: MoodleIn the words of an excited person
Oh Yes! It works.
1. There were some lines in /user/editlib.php that needed to be commented out as well as in edit_form.php
2. Setting for user is “Student” and not the default “authenticated”It is very exciting to know that students in August will be able to register in WordPress and immediately have access to the MediaWiki and Moodle … fantastic!
In reply to: Moodle@Windhamdavid – yes – I’ve seen scholarpress and installed it.
OK – this is my progress. I can now get the WP ID and password recognized and logged into Moodle. The challenge now is the loop of “There are required fields in this form marked” because email and City are blank. When I update those two fields, the error remains that the two fields need updating .. LOL.
Oh – so close – yet – so far
In reply to: MoodleOK. This is what I’ve learned so far ..
WP is using phpass instead of MD5 hash.
Moodle is using MD5 hash plus saltThe phpass authentication written by schoolsict built the views incorrectly. I’ve fixed the views and am now working on the php. I’ve discovered you cannot simply rename auth/db to something like auth/db-orig and upload the new /auth/db files … you get blank pages.
And that’s it – it still doesn’t work – yet – but I’ve made progress… (sort of)
In reply to: WordPress 3.0 + BuddyPress 1.2.4.1 & Cachingcongratulations. The struggles paid off.
In reply to: bp-forum attachment error in BP 1.2.5OK. I looked at line 9 of forum-attachments-for-buddypress-bp-functions.php
$results = $wpdb->query( “SELECT * FROM `bb-attachments`” );
Made a change to the last ` … and now the error is gone. Maybe it was just the resaving of the file … dunno
In reply to: bp-forum attachment error in BP 1.2.5Well, after disabling a few other items from the site – guess what returned? Yes and I can’t get this one fixed … .
The table bb-attachments is definitely in the database.
Disabling plugins to see if there is a conflict with one.go to /wp-admin (the admin panel for WP) and find Settings menu on the left side, near the bottom. You should then see Permalinks as a submenu. Update that setting and see what happens.I prefer “day and name”
Let us know.
