    I started the group for splogging and spam a while ago, but to be honest I haven’t experienced any for quite a while now.

    @andy
    ’s right about changing the signup slug, that made a big difference for me. I also renamed (removed) the wp-signup.php file as that’s not in use, and again that made a difference – though watch for that on a wpmu / wp upgrade as it’ll replace the file.

    I removed the WordPress references in my theme footer too, just to make it a little less obvious that I’m running WP.

    Also running SI-Captcha antispam and NoSpamNX, but that’s about it nowadays.

    I think I may have a similar problem to this:

    I’m seeing correct avatars in activity feeds and all BP content. However, in comments and also using Login With Ajax plugin, only seeing either the admin avatar or ‘mystery man’.

    Also, the Login with Ajax plugin says it’s trying to call an undefined function for bp_loggedinuser_avatar() – but obviously the BP aspects of my site are calling that function fine.

    My setup:

    WPMU 2.9.1

    BP 1.2

    Custom theme, ‘buddypressed’ using Andy’s Buddypress Template plugin.

    Anyone else seeing this? Or have any ideas how to fix it?

    If it’s completely blank, and viewing the source code in the browser is blank too, my first thought would be an error in the php somewhere in the theme you’re using.

    Would be good if you could post ideas and solutions here too: https://buddypress.org/groups/fighting-spam-splogs

    There’s already a few plugins etc mentioned there that might help you out too.

    @member11 – rather than enclosing your website URL in brackets (and making your users do the same) you’d be better off specifying the website URL field in the config file as @r-a-y suggests, so that it’s not linked to the search facility:

    Open up the custom-profile-filters-for-buddypress.php file and in the $no_link_fields array (starting on line 14) add in your field, so mine looks like this:

    $no_link_fields = array( // Enter the field ID of any field that you want to appear as plain, non-clickable text. Don’t forget to separate with commas.

    ‘Skype ID ‘ ,

    ‘Phone’ ,

    ‘IM’ ,

    ‘Web Site’

    );

    – where my web site field is called Web Site.

    Also you may want to add in any social networking URLS that your site uses in the $social_networking_fields array that’s below this array. Same principle.

    Try the custom filters for BP plugin – https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/custom-profile-filters-for-buddypress/

    Allows you / your users to be more prescriptive about what BP ‘auto-links’. Don’t think it will completely stop BP auto-linking some things – though you could, if you wished, tell the plugin to exclude ALL fields from being auto-linked.

    You / users can also use the square brackets ‘[ ]’ in profile fields to specify words or phrases they do want linking.

    The plugin’s pretty handy for specifying fields like web site / twitter that shouldn’t be auto-linked.

    You might want to take a look at this plugin:

    http://manojkumar.org/user-import-for-buddypress/

    It will allow you to import a ‘delimited’ set of data into your bp setup. Note that the current version is 1.0.3, and the author includes a link to this further down in the comments – http://manojkumar.org/wp-content/uploads/user-import-for-buddypress-all-fields-1.0.3.zip

    I’m about to try the plugin myself, so can’t completely vouch for it’s effectiveness yet.

    I’m guessing the potential problem with this for you could be that it won’t send out current passwords, though it says it will send out new passwords to your users. It depends how understanding you think your users are, and how many you have to move over – might be worth the potential user backlash to ensure you can effectively move them into your BP setup?

    Yep, that’s spam. Seeing quite a few of these, with the ‘real’ name and realish email address.

    @JJJ I’m in Firefox 3.0.15, Mac OS X 10.5.8

    Is it Chrome & Safari in Windows where you’re not seeing the sidebar… at all?? Pretty sure it used to be there!

    Thanks for the advice on the top links – I presume you’re talking about their light grey ‘off’ state?

    Wow, @Chouf1, quick reply! Thanks.

    You would seem to be right – just tried it on another machine (yep, should have done that before!) and all seems fine, apart from the events plugin.

    I think I was expecting trouble, given the issue I already have with the events directory not displaying. Could this have been a caching issue? Oh well, I’ll keep an eye out in case it re-occurs.

    Also seeing this issue with BP 1.1.2

    This issue is not related to the welcome pack but BuddyPress, and specifically when adding members via the Users menu in the dashboard.
