In reply to: users complaining
@Erich73 I mean changing the name because calling it a forum is not really the right terminology when people are set in their head about what a forum really is. “discussions” seems like a better choice of wording as you posting “topics” that people discuss.
Maybe having a main forum but inside groups call it discussions like on facebook.
In reply to: users complainingI agree with @thelandman OOB Buddypress is the whole kitchen sink but you can cut a ton out via custom themes.
BP groups are basically a facebbook fan page. It has the exact same features. So if people are on FB then they clearly can understand the UI of BP. Maybe changing forums to discussions? It’s the site wide activity feed that in my opinion creates the most confusion.
Doesn’t work with 3.0
In reply to: How to stop Navigation bar items from wraping?_inc but you should create a child theme CSS file and use that. https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/
In reply to: WordPress 3.0 new content typesyeah I’m saying post types need to be able to be written from front end or they are useless for a social network. That way you will be able to create a network so individualized from any other BP network.
In reply to: Adding more fields to groupsElaborate? What fields?
In reply to: Hide BP widgetsFunctions go in a file bp-custom.php put this file in your plugins directory
In reply to: WordPress 3.0 new content typesI can say that post types are for individual pieces of content and not so much slugs. Pages seem a better fit for this. What I’m suggesting is say you create a content type called movies. There would need to be a way via front end of BP for users to add a movie. Right now they can enter posts either in the form of activity or forum updates. With 3.0 content types it opens a ton of options but only if BP allows front end users to add this stuff. Meta data added to post types?
In reply to: WordPress 3.0 new content typesHmm, needs to be some sort of way for front end users to harness the power of content types. Like that pages will be components. It’s merging into WP better.
In reply to: WordPress 3.0 new content typesAwesome!
In reply to: WordPress 3.0 new content typesI think BP needs to be rewritten to use content types. Why settle for just groups or members or forums? I see site owners being able to create a content type and this becomes a slug that can be outputted via theme files.
In reply to: Can't see 'members' page in buddypress local installI have BP installed locally and it works fine. I’m using MAMP.
In reply to: BP-FBConnect not working with buddypress 1.2.3Use the plugin that says autoconnect. It works great and is coded with BP in mind. https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-fb-autoconnect/
In reply to: facebook like button unique href?Yeah you must have some wrong code because I used the steps outlined in that tut and it works perfectly. Note that you must change the link code to match the content. I’n added a forum topic like button and it’s not that same code you’s use for an activity item.
In reply to: Default 3 Column Themewhenever you make the container size wider you may need to adjust the columns to. Use firebug firefox extension and you can see the code. You can even change things with firebug with out actually changing the site code.
firebug is really something you should learn to use if you want to edit a theme and have little experience.
In reply to: facebook like button unique href?In reply to: is a global forum possible?I’m working on this as part of a theme. Separating out a single forum under the slug forum. So that way when you click forum it’s just one general forum and then groups have their own mini forum inside. This is really how BP should be from the start. A main sitewide forum with group forums that are just inside group only.
It made the forum replies go all weird. Anyhoo people should not be able to comment on something and it show up elsewhere, thats bad UX.
I tried that Forum Extras plugin and it’s not the same thing as the activity stream and throws in a different workflow for people to get used too. Also I had so many bugs and problems with it that I ended up deleting it.
In reply to: Here come the spammers!!!I change my slug, have at least one new required profile filed as a drop down and added WP Super captcha plugin and have never had a spam sign up ever.
In reply to: Here come the spammers!!!You rock!
My ONLY beef with the forums is it does not work like the activity stream. I would have it where the replies work just like on the activity stream. Somebody can post in the topic or reply to a post in the topic But each time somebody replies then that topic goes back to the top like a forum. Activity streams move too fast and things go under the fold too quickly for forum/ blog based discussions. Facebook fixed this problem by giving you the option to filter your news feed by popular topics. I suggest adding that to the activity stream as well as a last replied commented filter. So things that get replied to bump to top.
In reply to: List of Best PluginsThats a subjective question considering every network will require different plugins. Thats the beauty of open source. You have a ton of choices.
Better question would be: I have an X network what plugins are right for it?

In reply to: Teach Brendan How to Drive Buddypress! The only difference between WP and WPMU is on WPMU each user on the site will have their own blog with an admin. It’s like having your own wordpress.com. If you want just a social network type site then I’d go with WP + BP. Functionality wise there really is no difference between BP on WP or WPMU.
As for hosting. Thats a personal choice. I use shared hosting with some cacheing and I off set with hosting static files on Amazon S3. If you make your themes slim and compress files you should be ok unless you get linked to by a major site and a million people are hitting your site.
