    Actually, I believe a reporting feature is now slated for a future BP release

    oh wow – just checked a few installs, thanks for the find.

    though that fix above updates the illegal_names _options table with a blank array

    i’d like to see the whole activity stream become a bit more robust – generic in use but more powerful api options

    – access control (who, what – can update, read am AS record – fine granular framework from users, groups, plugins, component, types) – right now its a bit clunky to remove certain items and no way to block others (ie, i like a plugin’s functionality but i don’t care for the activity record, i want to block certain groups from updates, or block certain activity types to be displayed, etc)

    this one may be outside the criteria but the whole bbpress <-> bp thing. IMHO – ramp up the AS to handle forum content. (already have commenting, threading, etc – i don’t see importance of bbpress hiding under the covers, even if it will become a wp plugin. so much duplicate functionality being used and another layer of dependencies)

    BP => like Firefox and Burger King – I love extensibility and having it my way. :-P

    to get at the list of built in smilies (or even override the list) the global $wpsmiliestrans contains an array

    have a look in wp-includes/formatting.php for the smilie stuff (filters to override the location, translate_smiley will return an img src, etc)

    @Chouf1 has some great points – anyone has access to the same tools when creating a community site. BUT – it takes a ringleader upstart and keep a community going. For that, I’d say treat a community idea like a business plan. It will take time to foster growth, activity and membership – (catch-22 of a void site with no activity and members and who will join to start in)

    One of the online communities that I’m apart of grew from a local hangout of car geeks (few dozen people) back in the mid-90s now to the largest automotive discussion forums (500k+ users and some 60,285,241 posts later) – all it took was a span of 13 years :-P Frankly the site still operates and grows on outdated forum software, no frills, no social aspect, no mobile, web 0.5 basically. Now it could be better – and that has lead to other small niche community from this (20-30k users on better tools) but the point is; you have to be passionate about your community and provide the value-added benefits that your users seek.

    How soon should you start to promote the website?

    When everything is perfectly functioning and tested?

    Or it is better to start to get the people in when the main features are ok, even if a few things are not working as they should or you would like them to?

    I’m a K.I.S.S. advocate – if a site is too complex or overwhelming that may drive users away. Sometimes it works out for the best to keep it low on the extra features and listen to the community as it grows – then customize and add things in that will make it easier for them to use the site. The web is saturated with communities and users have a lot of choices (though i find the tool being used one of the lower deciding factors)

    you can use your theme’s function file or create a wp-content/plugins/bp-custom.php file

    something like this should work (removes the links from the group creation steps and the group page)

    function my_remove_invites_create_group_steps( ) {
    global $bp;

    //admin eats wheaties and can do anything
    if ( is_site_admin() )
    return;

    //send invites on group creation steps
    unset($bp->groups->group_creation_steps['group-invites']);

    }
    add_action( 'groups_setup_globals', 'my_remove_invites_create_group_steps', 100 );

    function my_remove_invites_groups_setup_nav( ) {
    global $bp;

    //admin eats wheaties and can do anything
    if ( is_site_admin() )
    return;

    bp_core_remove_subnav_item( $bp->groups->slug, 'invites' );

    bp_core_remove_subnav_item( $bp->groups->slug, 'send-invites' );

    }
    add_action( 'groups_setup_nav', 'my_remove_invites_groups_setup_nav' );

    markitup works (requires theme editing, javascript, etc) – and won’t go all funky on the textarea like tinymce

    In this thread, I figured out how to make the default front page of the site be the Forums listing. Sadly, though, since doing that (with the method I outlined at the bottom of the first page), the forum index sunb-plugin is failing (silently).

    my plugin looks for the forums component and will execute only on that page

    remove this statement if ( bp_forum_extras_forumsdirectory_component() ) { in the plugin setup globals function.

    Is there any way to get an RSS feed for this page:

    to just to generate a latest all public topic rss feed?

    i don’t even recall this being an option in bbPress – unless the “Views” plugin by _ck_ was used which allowed some javascript to reorder the table cols on the page.

    you may have to dig into the BB_Query and see what you can do – (and reference the function bp_forums_get_topic_posts( $args = ” ) { and function bp_forums_get_forum_topics( $args = ” ) { in bp-forums)

    on the members page is a loop then inside of that you can call: bp_get_member_user_id() which will return the user_id for the current record

    fwiw – the call will be different depending on what page, loop, etc you are in.

    make sure you have the global $bp in the function and

    $bp->displayed_user->id

    or

    $bp->loggedin_user->id

    yes i taken the sidebar code for the heat_map and placed it into a simple widget and will add it to the forum extras plugin (unlike the widget for latest topics and forum index – not dynamic depending on what you are viewing – group, profile, etc)

    also a quick snip – if you want to display a a tag listing on your theme group/single/forum/topic.php file; add this code somewhere:

    <div id="topic-tags">
    <p><?php _e('Tags:'); ?></p>
    <?php
    $ttags = bb_get_topic_tags( bp_get_the_topic_id() );
    if ( $ttags ) : ?>
    <?php bb_list_tags( 'topic='. bp_get_the_topic_id() .'tags='.$ttags ); ?>
    <?php else : ?>
    <p><?php printf(__('No <a href="%s">tags</a> yet.'), bp_get_forum_directory_permalink() . '/#tags' ); ?></p>
    <?php endif; ?>
    </div>

    actually, after looking over the signup – that woudn’t be the correct filter; seems $bp->signup->username = $_POST['signup_username']; is assigned after

    @nuprn1

    avoid hacking the core – you can use the filter

    apply_filters( 'bp_core_validate_user_signup'

    which returns an array of user_name, user_email, errors after bp_core_validate_user_signup fires

    i don’t believe there is a way to override the “since” part

    have a look in bp-core.php at function bp_core_time_since( $older_date, $newer_date = false ) {

    This does not work for non-admin users when there are no comments. The space where the comment section goes is blank.

    this plugin takes away the traditional comment reply section – only the admin will see that.

    Users should only see the activity stream (reply) (favorite) links under a blog post – BUT it will only work IF the blog post has an activity->type “new_blog_post” – otherwise the plugin won’t hook – the main activity action has to exist for that blog post (or comment)

    On a similar subject, there should be a login form for non logged in users (“You Must Be Logged In To Comment”).

    i’ll add in a log in link

    The BP Import Blog Activity plugin only works with WPMU and not single WP installs. :(

    oh shoot – maybe i can look into an importer for this plugin then. not sure about the file permission thing (maybe your server configuration)

    for some reason “Sorry, there was no comments found.” keeps showing up after posting a comment.

    just fixed that one (give the development version about 15 or so to update the file – blogactivity-loop.php
