So, you’re looking for a “crossover” between private and public groups. Private so the activity doesn’t show in the stream (but it does show in the group) yet public so folks don’t need to be invited to join.
This might help: on lines 71 to 101 is the function/action for groups_setup_globals. On line 97 is the valid_status array (public, private, hidden) where I’m thinking you could add a new status like “category”. As that new status would not be “public”, activity shouldn’t show up in the main stream, and as it wouldn’t be “private” either, neither invitations nor membership requests would be needed.
What do you think…doable?
EDIT: I guess you would need a way to keep that option out of the preselects available to users at the group creation stage though. Hmmm…
Check out buddypress/bp-groups.php/ at line 1278. There’s already a function in there to hide the activity sitewide for any group that is NOT public. I’m by no means a coder, so I’m just guessing here, but maybe you can create/assign a new status for the category groups. By snooping around in the same file, you might find other actions/hooks to keep them out of profiles too.
EDIT – Just saw @rich‘s post
In reply to: is a global forum possible?Global Forums plugin just released today at Buddydev. Looks ossum!
You could try this plugin: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/custom-coming-soon-page/
It has options to allow visitors to subscribe via email, link to your Twitter/Facebook pages, launch date countdown…
In reply to: New Buddypress Groups design.. Group HierarchyCheck out this plugin. It already provides the capability of organizing by tags. Might help.
In reply to: fullname vs username vs first + last name…Here’s my idea on how to “solve” this dilemma.
1 – Add a field to the base group labeled: “First Name” and order it before the “Name” field.
2 – Create a function to add the value of “First Name” before the value of “Name” (including it in links) wherever “Name” appears in all templates.OK. So #1 is easy.
Anybody have an idea how to code #2 so that alphabetical ordering will be determined only by “Name” value? In reply to: latest profile visitors widgetBrajesh Singh at BuddyDev.com has a plugin to do just that: http://buddydev.com/buddypress/buddypress-recent-profile-visitors-plugin/
It’s a premium plugin, so you’d have to sign up as a member of his site to get it (membership = $30/3 months). The fee is worth every penny though: you’ll find a LOT of other useful plugins.
Just tried to sign up to your site and got this error:
Fatal error: Call to a member function add() on a non-object in /home/fortylicious/fortylicious.ca/wp-content/plugins/terms-of-use-2/terms-of-use.php on line 154In reply to: New Buddypress Groups design.. Group HierarchyAbout your comment in the original post: “… still thinking of how I want to go about this.”
How about preserving the present group structure as sub-category-groups, but, during group creation, have users select a category from amid a selection preset by the superadmin? This way, the user-created groups could be added to a category directory of related groups in the same sub-category, with links to other categories in the site-wide group.
Then, rather than showing “All Groups” and “My Groups” in the group directory item-list-tabs, they could read “Sub-Category A”, “Sub-Category B”, “Sub-Category C”, and so on, ending with the ever-popular “My Groups”.
In reply to: Make Main Blog Page Show ExcerptsI’ve been trying to add a call for the excerpt for each “Latest Post” in blogs-loop.php (“Blogs” subtab in member profile) but, as I’m a php noob, I wind up with excerpts from ALL posts. (At least I got something.
)Would you happen to know how I can get just the excerpt for each corresponding Latest Post to show?
Any help is appreciated!
In reply to: Advanced Search plugin neededI was just going to post the link to Buddydev too, but ya beat me to it!
In reply to: Need a video plugin, for video communityHave you tried Buddypress Links?
https://buddypress.org/community/groups/third-party-components-plugins/forum/topic/buddypress-links-04x-releases-and-support/Nope, that didn’t work quite right. But this DOES:
http://pastebin.com/pMH5dQLdNotes on highlights:
– Lines 1 to 3 have been added to include a message to non-logged-in users.
– is_user_logged_in conditional added to line 5 AND php endif added at the end (nested “if” statements… great stuff!)Have fun!

You would need to create a forums-loop.php file in your child theme. Try this: http://pastebin.com/mpizkJXq
Notes on highlights:
– Lines 1 to 3 have been added to include a message to non-logged-in users.
– The is_user_logged_in conditional has been moved from line 10 and added to the initial “if” statement on line 5 (actually lines 6 & 1 in forums-loop.php).This should work but unfortunately, I can’t test it on my site ‘cuz my server is down. Oh well… it looks like I’m going to have to dust off my xbox

Let us know how it goes.EDIT: 5 min after posting this, my server’s back up again. Lemme test my own theory…
In reply to: is there a featured groups widget avail? There’s this to start with. It only displays members’ avatars (via usernames), but I guess with some code fiddling, you could get it to display just about anything you like: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/buddypress-featured-members-widget/home/
Or you could try this simple solution in your page templates: http://pastebin.com/KFeEAh1Z
I’ve installed s2member on my site specifically because it CAN restrict access to both paid memberships AND free accounts. You can restrict access to posts, pages, tags, categories, single pages and uri’s. You can also have lots of fun with advanced conditionals and display different content to different membership levels, including the free level. For more info, check out this readme: http://www.primothemes.com/readme/914/
Here’s my membership options page to give you an idea of how I’ve set it up with free/paid plans: http://rspace.org/membership/
In reply to: Quick questionsTo redirect users to their profile when logging in: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-redirect-to-profile/
In reply to: Quick questionsTo change the base profile field group name, go to your WP Dashboard. Under BuddyPress > General settings, you’ll see the first entry allows you to change this.
To set the Activity Stream as your home page, go to your WP Dashboard again. Scroll down to the bottom and, under Settings > Reading, you’ll see the first entry allows you to choose what to display on the front page. Click “A Static Page”, then from the dropdown, select “Activity Stream”. Note that you’ll have to create a page for your Posts Page.
To “lock people out” of certain content areas, you could customize your child-theme templates to display what you want to logged-in/non-logged-in users like here: http://pastebin.com/KFeEAh1Z. Or you could try the s2member plugin: http://www.primothemes.com/post/s2member-membership-plugin-with-paypal/
Hope this helps!
In reply to: embedding videos in profiles. My site is geared toward a community of folks recovering and helping others recover from addiction. I think they would find it kind of cool to be able to post a video intro of themselves in their profiles.
In reply to: embedding videos in profiles.Have you tried r-a-y’s oEmbed for BuddyPress plugin?
In reply to: How to exclude a page from the Navigation BarGlad I could be of help.

Snap! That worked (didn’t occur to me to try that one). I really do have to bone up on what all these actions do…

Thanks Mercime
@David Lewis
Thanks again for a great bit of code!
You wouldn’t happen to have an idea as to how to exclude from the navbar the “auto-generated” tabs from plugins such as BP-Links or BP-Gallery, and include them also in the dropdown, now would you?
In reply to: How to exclude a page from the Navigation BarTo exclude any WP page from the navbar, try this plugin:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/exclude-pages/To add links to your footer, simply edit your child theme’s footer.php file.
