    Thanks Jason!

    CSS hacks are dirty so don’t give me too much heat about that ;)

    Should also work, David.

    If you can’t see the checkbox, you can’t notify people ;)

    I’ve attached a tentative patch on the trac:

    Feel free to help test!

    Probably the user’s activity feed. I’m not sure if the sitewide activity should account for external blog feeds, because this could potentially fill up the sitewide feed with unrelated external links.

    Funny I was talking about assumptions and I assumed that your bbPress install was sharing the same DB ;)

    Boone:

    These lines will fix the problem I was having in the bbPress trigger plugin:

    $con = mysql_connect("localhost",constant("BBDB_USER"),constant("BBDB_PASSWORD"));
    mysql_select_db(constant("BBDB_NAME"), $con) or die(mysql_error());

    This will work for all bbPress installs; no more assumptions ;)

    To be safe, you could probably switch out “localhost” for constant(“BBDB_HOST”).

    I’m going to try and use the BBDB_USER and BBDB_PASSWORD constant variables from bb-config.php into the $con variable to see if this will fix the problem.

    Will report back.

    Hey Boone,

    Just trying out the bbPress companion trigger plugin and I’m encountering this problem when creating new topics:

    Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Access denied for user ‘www-data’@’localhost’ (using password: NO) in /var/www/example.com/forums/my-plugins/bb-group-forum-subscription.php on line 22

    Warning: mysql_select_db(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL-Link resource in /var/www/example.com/forums/my-plugins/bb-group-forum-subscription.php on line 24

    Replying to already created topics works fine.

    There’s also a noticeable delay when posting with the bbPress plugin; I’m guessing it’s the database queries that the plugin is doing.

    How about bbpress plugins? Do they work, too?

    Some will work by putting the bbPress plugin in the /mu-plugins/ folder.

    BuddyPress’ embedded version of bbPress does not have a bbPress backend, so try using bbPress plugins that do not have an admin options page.

    (I’d try _ck_’s plugins since most of her plugins do not have an admin options page)

    Other trickier ones will need to be ported over.

    Erich, I’m guessing that private and hidden topics will be shown to the logged-in user if they have permission to view them, otherwise just public topics will be shown.

    Wow… how did I miss this thread? :)

    Need to test this for sure!

    Thanks for this plugin, westpointer!

    Boone… great work as always! :)

    Still on < 1.1 myself, and was thinking we needed something like this for group forums in the interim.

    Just a few suggestions:

    – maybe add the admin options page under the “BuddyPress” admin menu?

    – is there an action that will show the “Forum subscription” block on the group forum index page instead of the group homepage?

    Try SEO for BuddyPress:

    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/seo-for-buddypress/

    Make sure you remove your <title> tag in your BuddyPress theme otherwise you’ll have double <title> tags.

    Not sure about the plugin’s compatibility with BP 1.1-RC1.

    Just an update, Matt Kern just made a post on the BP forums about his manually-approve signup plugin for WPMU:

    Haha… would help if the BP sites were somewhat related to one another! ;)

    Hey wordpressfan, understand that BuddyPress runs on top of WordPress MU so any spam issues are still, at its core, a WPMU issue.

    The WPMU readme.txt has some info on how to counter spammers:

    https://trac.mu.wordpress.org/browser/trunk/README.txt (read line 165 and on)

    For the Darcy Norman link, use WPMUTutorials’ variation for BuddyPress:

    http://wpmututorials.com/how-to/spam-blogs-and-buddypress/

    —

    Also, for your suggestion on moderating signups, WPMUTutorials also has an article on that:

    http://wpmututorials.com/hacks/how-to-moderate-signups/

    Read the last comment in that post for info on modifying the article’s instructions for BuddyPress.

    You might also want to check out SI Captcha:

    https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/si-captcha-for-wpmu-and-buddypress

    The beta version has support for BP as well.

    Hope that helps in some way!

    Hey Grosbouff,

    It’s better to post development enhancements in the trac to avoid getting lost in the shuffle.

    Add your suggestion as an enhancement in the BuddyPress trac.

    Erich73, can you tell us what happens when you disable javascript?

    I’m basically copying and pasting the comment I made on P.S’s blog post!

    Wow! Just looked at the screenshots and this is definitely needed in the core of BP 1.1!

    Will test it out when I finally have a chance to upgrade to the latest BP.

    Great work!

    If the issue still exists, please post a ticket in the trac:

    Possibly if you place them in mu-plugins, but you don’t have the bbPress backend.

    I’m not really worried about a backend. Most of _ck_’s plugins do not require an admin page, so I think that will be fine!

    I’ll start playing with porting some bbPress plugins over as soon as I upgrade to BP 1.1.

    Good questions, DJPaul. These are things I’m wondering about myself!

    About private/hidden forums, will topics made in these forums show up on the main BP forums page for group members who are a part of those forums?

    Also about bbPress plugins, would it be possible to somehow take advantage of bbPress’ existing plugins and use them in the BP forums environment?

    Or would we need to port some of these plugins over by adding the appropriate filters/actions that BP forums uses?

    @r-a-y

    Keymaster

    Good stuff! I hope to upgrade to WPMU 2.8.4a, so I can test BP 1.1-beta either this week or the next.

    Will probably stick to legacy theme support until I have time to play with the parent/child theme structure.

    I’m now pondering over whether I should use an internal installation of bbPress now that I’ve seen the new BP forums in action (http://testbp.org/forums). I’ll cross that bridge when I get there!

    @r-a-y

    Look into the Supporter plugin (you need to pay for it though!).

    @r-a-y

    Nice! I definitely have to play around with the trunk version when I have some time!

    Wondering if there is going to be a loop that we can use to display which groups have public forums.
