In reply to: New Plugin – BuddyPress Links – Beta Support
Hey Chouf1,
Andy’s plugin is for groups though.
I like the general idea of MrMaz’s plugin; I need to give it a test install to see for myself because it looks like it takes RSS feeds as MrMaz’s site has a ton of article submissions already and they can’t all be manual submissions!
In reply to: New Plugin – BuddyPress Links – Beta SupportIs it easy to change the lexicon from “Links” to something else?
I can see this being used as a news aggregator.
I’ll probably rename the slug to “News” when I install your plugin, but great work dude!
EDIT: Okay, I see that these articles are manual submissions like Digg. It would be awesome if your plugin could take RSS feeds.
In reply to: Registration Button Not WorkingDid you alter any files in the default theme?
In reply to: Hide welcome widget if user is loggedInstead of going through all that work, I’d use the Widget Logic plugin and use “!if_user_logged_in()” to show the Welcome Widget only when a user isn’t logged in.
Just a thought…
In reply to: subdomain change to directoryIt’s not impossible, paisano! (sorry I’m in a Super Mario Bros phase – circa Lou Albano)
Check out this blog post by Adam:

Hope that helps!
In reply to: Vancouver storyBriefly glanced through it.
Didn’t know the creator of Plenty of Fish was from Vancouver!
In reply to: SubGroups/Sub Forums can it be done?Hey TR123,
Short answer: Right now, you can’t.
There are a couple of requests in the Trac for group categories:
https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/946
https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/1068
I don’t anticipate this coming in 2009; I’m guessing something like this will come in the New Year.
Hope that helps!
In reply to: buddpress.org messages brokeI can confirm what everyone else is reporting.
Just tried to send a PM and got the same error as what BeLogical showed in his YouTube vid.
At least I think this is how it works!
You’ve got it, boldlygoing!
In reply to: Integrating several buddypress + one vBulletinI’d be very interested to see what your vBulletin/BP setup looks and functions like when it’s completed!
This is something I’ve been pondering about myself.
It really depends on your community’s needs and how you anticipate growth.
If you like how buddypress.org has their forums, then you’d want a separate install of bbPress.
If you anticipate that you’d want other forums besides the ones created by groups, then you’d want a separate install of bbPress.
If you want more administrative control over your forums (moderation, plugins), then you’d want a separate install.
If you like the fact that forums are only created within the Groups infrastructure, then go with a “new install”. Positives about this approach is you wouldn’t have to modify your BP template often, whereas going with a separate install requires you to create a new bbPress template to match the rest of your site.

I have a question for the BP devs: let’s say I go with the new, integrated forum approach and want to switch back to my old, separate install… I’d probably have to restore a database backup as well as a backup of my files right?
In reply to: Multi-thread WiresThis is kind of diverting from the original topic, but what I meant in your ticket is BuddyPress forums are powered by BuddyPress groups.
So you can’t really have “threaded forums” without having “threaded groups” or some way to organize and categorize groups, which currently doesn’t exist.
If you’re just talking about displaying the forums vertically, that’s possible via CSS.
Hope that makes sense…
In reply to: where the hell are the forum management? If I set a forum in a hiddend BuddyPress group it will be hidden in BBPress too?.
@sacom, not necessarily.
Look into Burt Adsit’s bp Groups plugin:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bpgroups/
This is what I’m using on BP < 1.1 (yeah I know I got to play catch-up!)
I’m not sure how compatible it is with BP 1.1+…
In reply to: Multi-thread WiresHey Marcus,
Check out a cool plugin by Sandra Petronic that does what you want it to do:
http://devbox.computec.de/2009/09/buddypress-activity-comments-plugin/
Discussion thread here:
https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/activity-comments-plugin
Hope that helps!
In reply to: No bbpress Forum link in GroupsAs a rule of thumb, it’s always best to state what version numbers you’re using when asking for troubleshooting support, as well as a clear explanation of what you did.
How did you install bbPress?
If you’re using BuddyPress 1.1, there should be a one-click install for bbPress; you shouldn’t have to install bbPress separately.
More info about bbPress in BP 1.1 can be found here:
https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-discussions/buddypress-forum/

Sorry if that wasn’t much help!
I’m not on BP 1.1+ yet!
In reply to: Minimal, less “social” BuddyPress?I believe GigaOM is using only extended profiles for BP:
They’re probably haven’t upgraded to BP 1.1, since it’s a highly-customized WPMU/BP site.

There’s probably no “gotchas” since you’re turning everything off!
Alkivia is an alternative for user profiles:
wordpress.org/extend/plugins/alkivia/
In reply to: Facebook ConnectThis is just an opinion from someone who’s never used the plugin… but it’s basically for login / registration ease.
You don’t have to register a new account to become a member of someone’s BP network… just login with your Facebook account!
According to the plugin’s description, there are plans to integrate the friend list and also newsfeed publishing.
You might want to head on over to the WordPress MU forums as it sounds more like a WPMU problem:
https://mu.wordpress.org/forums/
You can login with the same username and password you use here to post on the WPMU forums!
In reply to: BP showcase – Lead us to waterIt depends on how complicated your design is and how it differs from the default BP design.
With the new parent / child theming structure of BP (since v1.1), you won’t have to worry about updating your theme when BP gets an upgrade!
And… you also won’t find many BP theme frameworks right now since v1.1 just got released! So it’s probably easier to create a child theme of the default BP theme.
In reply to: feedwordpress and php warning@mark, make sure you upgrade your FeedWordpress plugin as I’m guessing you upgraded from WPMU 2.7.1 to 2.8.4a.
FeedWordPress has undergone major changes since then to be compatible with 2.8+.
Oh! and also overwrite the default WordPress RSS library with FWP’s Magpie RSS library.
For more, read the upgrade installation instructions:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/feedwordpress/installation/

In reply to: barrier-free plug-in ?Hey Erich,
I don’t think this is directly related to BP.
There’s plenty of tutorials which teach you how to increase the font size.
Here’s one that I just found by Googling:
http://www.shopdev.co.uk/blog/text-resizing-with-jquery/
This uses the jQuery javascript library to do it.
If at all possible, use 301 redirects for the old blogs so they redirect over to the new blogs.
Easiest way would be to use the same style of permalink structure and using a RewriteRule in your .htaccess file.
If this sounds like jargon, look up each term on Google!
I think the hardest thing will be actually migrating the blogs.
Depending on the blogging system you’re migrating from, this could be a challenge!
If the old blogs use WordPress, you could get away with using a database export or by using Ron Rennick’s excellent Advanced Export plugin.
In reply to: Group forum subscriptionI already have the topic implemented in the title of the email on my custom version of Boone’s plugin, as well as changing the email address to “noreply”.
Looking forward to your changes, Mike!
