In reply to: Safe to edit BuddyPress Plugin?
Hook into the filters or actions whenever possible. (Basically anywhere in the codebase with an ‘apply_filters’ or ‘do_action’ call.) Otherwise, you’ll run into major upgrade problems and headaches depending on the level and complexity of your hacks!
Need a primer on filters and actions?
http://themeshaper.com/2009/05/03/filters-wordpress-child-themes/That tutorial is for themes, but applies to plugins as well.
Hope that helps!
In reply to: Renaming ComponentsI definitely do not recommend what humarahema suggested.
In reply to: Notification on Profile UpdateHi Steve,
Missed your mentions.
do_actions can be found by searching for them. If you have a good search program, do a search for “do_action” throughout the /plugins/buddypress/ folder. (You’ll get a lot of results! It’s better to just sift through the code to find what you want though.)
As for specifics, the do_action for activity updates is “bp_activity_add”:
https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/browser/tags/1.2.9/bp-activity.php#L679The code snippet above will not work with this as the parameter for “bp_activity_add” is different.
In reply to: How do you enable user blog in buddypress 1.2.9?You need to convert WordPress into a network before users can create individual blogs:
https://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network
https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/configure-buddypress-components/#post-1855 (scroll down to “Blog tracking”)—
Or you might consider allowing your users to post on your current blog by making them an Author:
https://codex.wordpress.org/Roles_and_Capabilities#AuthorBy default, users are Subscribers.
It’s a cookie problem that was not fixed in v1.2.
However, it is fixed in v1.3:
https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/4039bp-album uses the activity stream to add comments.
Blog post != activity stream.
What I’d recommend is to disable activity replies for blog posts and comments.
To do this, login to your WP dashboard and navigate to “BuddyPress > General Settings”.
Under “Disable activity stream commenting on blog and forum posts?”, select “Yes” and save.
In reply to: How to show activity from ALL the members of a GROUPCheck out the activity stream loop:
https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-docs/custom-buddypress-loops/the-activity-stream-loop/You’ll need to pass the “object” param as “groups” and the “primary_id” param as the group ID.
eg.
if ( bp_has_activities( ‘object=groups&primary_id=’ . YOUR_GROUP_ID ) ) :
… the rest of the code as written in the codex articleIn reply to: Detect if user is viewing their own profile?bp_is_my_profile() is the function you’re looking for.
if ( bp_is_my_profile() )

https://codex.buddypress.org/extending-buddypress/customizing-labels-messages-and-urls/In reply to: more control over ‘site activity’ notificationsThere’s a plugin for this, but it needs to be updated so the admin setting page link works in newer versions of WP:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-block-activity-stream-types/To fix the admin menu problem, read this:
http://code.ipstenu.org/2011/wordpress-3-1-network-menu/ (also read the comments on that post)In reply to: Link to profileThe `bp_core_get_user_domain()` function is what you’re looking for.
Try passing the author ID to that function.
eg. `bp_core_get_user_domain( p2_get_author_id() )`
I don’t believe BP sends notifications for forum posts by default.
Are you using a plugin? If so, which one? I think BuddyDev.com released a plugin for this. Not 100% sure.Also, what is written in the BuddyBar notification?
In reply to: “Send Private Message” auto fill problemSounds like you’re using a caching plugin like W3 Total Cache.
If you have it enabled, disable it.Right now, there are a few issues with using object caching plugins.
Stay tuned to the following ticket for updates:
https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/2636In reply to: Buddypress & bbpressBuddyPress will be properly integrated with the bbPress plugin in v1.4. Until then, you’ll have to make due with the existing setup.
In reply to: Theming User Profile / blog post page.Blog posts use regular WP templates: single.php for blog posts; page.php for WP pages.
User profile comprises a number of templates, but the main structure of it can be found under /bp-default/members/single/home.php. Copy this file to your theme retaining the folder structure and modify it to your heart’s content.
In reply to: Buddypress & bbpressThat codex page refers to the standalone bbPress script, and not the bbPress plugin.
Yeah, I know it’s a little bit confusing!Right now, there is no integration between BuddyPress and the bbPress plugin, however you can still use BuddyPress group forums and the bbPress plugin separately.
I would recommend changing your bbPress plugin slug to something else.
Login to the WP admin dashboard and navigate to “Settings > Forums”.
Next, change “Forum Base” to something other forums like “discuss”. This should hopefully fix your issue.
bbPress plugin forums will be located at /discuss. BuddyPress group forums will be located at /group-forums/ (make sure you also go through the BP forum setup in the WP dashboard under “BuddyPress > Forum Setup”).
In reply to: How to save deleted activity?Check out the bp_activity_action_delete_activity() function in bp-activity.php.
There’s a hook where you can grab the activity ID before it’s deleted:
`/* Call the action before the delete so plugins can still fetch information about it */
do_action( ‘bp_activity_action_delete_activity’, $activity_id, $activity->user_id );`You could potentially archive this information into a separate table for your own usage.
If you’re not familiar with WordPress hooks, check out the Plugin API codex page:
https://codex.wordpress.org/Plugin_APIIn reply to: Sending attachments with Private messagesIt’s possible, but the plugin would have to create its own tables to store the data. The Group Documents plugin that Dennis mentioned does something similar codewise and can be used as a jumping off point.
It would be better if BP had a dedicated meta table for PMs like the activity component. Then you could easily add this time of information without creating a separate table. I created a ticket here about this:
https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/3083There’s a plugin for this:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-block-activity-stream-types/It’s an older plugin and the developer is now busy with other projects, so you’ll need to update the plugin manually so the admin menu will show up in WP.
Read this tutorial:
http://code.ipstenu.org/2011/wordpress-3-1-network-menu/(Edit) Just read the full post, you want to hide it from group feeds only? Or throughout the site? If throughout the site, the plugin will do the job. If only on group feeds, you can take the basic premise from the plugin, then you’ll need to do a conditional to check if you’re in a BP feed.
For a free alternative, you can try Theme My Login:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/theme-my-login/This will make your login page:
hxxp://example.com/login/And also, I believe buddydev.com offers a plugin for this as well, but it’s a premium plugin.
In reply to: BuddyPress Template Pack 1.1 upgrade@boonebgorges – Looks like the button hooks are missing in BP Template Pack:
https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/browser/tags/1.2.8/bp-themes/bp-default/functions.php#L339This will fix the issue stevieg is experiencing.
In reply to: Gettinng id of the activity statusYou can use bp_get_activity_id() instead of directly accessing the $bp global.
Don’t use @r-a-y codes
@mikey3d – Is that a general recommendation?

I did say it was test code. Looks like you have whitespace issues in your /registration/activate.php. Delete any trailing whitespace from the beginning of that file.
eg.
` -spaces – <?php` – Delete that trailing space!Your htaccess rewrite rules look like it will interfere with querystring variables.
eg. example.com/my-page/?variable=my-testIn reply to: BuddyPress Template Pack 1.1 upgradestevieg – It’s probably because the following theme hooks are missing in Template Pack:
https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/browser/tags/1.2.8/bp-themes/bp-default/functions.php#L339stwc – If you’ve customized your BP theme files to oblivion in your WP theme, then don’t upgrade / reset the template files!
In reply to: override css from imported rss feedThis is not right forum to post at; the WordPress support forum is more appropriate:
https://wordpress.org/support/Anyway, a quick answer, you’ll need to filter the RSS content and do your formatting that way. If it’s as simple as removing a few inline styles, you could do a search and replace on the content.
