    I’ve just moved a localhost.localdomain install to a live server. It was easy as pie.

    As I recall the steps: I moved the entire WPMU install to my live server, created an empty database. I exported my local database as SQL from PHPmyadmin, then opened up the export.sql file in Notepad++ and search-replaced all the URLs as necessary on the local file, then imported to the new, blank database.

    I edited the wp-config file (and the bb-config as well) to update the db credentials and URLs, and almost everything just worked!

    Once exception: I think I had to go into the Buddypress–>Forums setup and hit the button to setup the forums again for some reason, but after that, all was well.

    The instructions here were helpful.

    This would work moving between domains as well, of course.

    Thanks for this clarification, guys. It was something I was wondering about too — the terminology had never been clear to me.

    And I totally did not know this:

    All BuddyPress plugins should be activated sitewide.

    Just a quick note @MrMaz, everything seems to be working as expected on a live install (after the fix foxley recommended) so I think my earlier issues were a combination of having Friends functionality switched off and working on a localhost install (there have been some minor strange things I’ve found doing that).

    jivany is right — unless someone has a modicum of experience with HTML and stylesheets, a smattering of PHP, and some knowledge of how WP works in terms of theme structure and templating, it’s going to be quite difficult for them to do much but use Buddypress out of the box or with child themes that are designed to work with the current version.

    It’s not impossible, but some above-novice level of knowledge and comfort with coding and website architecture has to be pretty much assumed. Take it as a challenge!

    This happens a lot with PHP and has happened to me a lot with pluggable.php lately.

    I’m not more than a novice with PHP, but the advice I’ve seen to fix it (and it worked for me) is to edit pluggable.php and make sure that the file begins with

    <?php

    with no blanks before it and ends with

    ?>

    with no blanks after. I’m not sure why it goes wonky sometimes, but it seems to.

    Edit: Before mucking around, though, you’d better wait for confirmation from someone better informed than I, just in case, if you can.

    Hah! I started reading, then looked to see it was Boone that posted it, then kept reading and wondering what the heck was going on, then remembered it was April 1st.

    Well played.

    Awesome, foxly, thanks for the help with Links — did you let MrMaz know?

    Bug report: if Friends are disabled in Buddypress components in the dashboard, hitting the View Thanks link in the activity stream to see who thanked an item results in the expanding div opening with an error message.

    Fatal error: Call to undefined function friends_get_friend_user_ids() in D:\xampp\htdocs\mefightclub\wp-content\plugins\buddypress-like\bp-like.php on line 381

    Just a heads-up about a possible conflict with MrMaz’s Buddypress Links, described here.

    @stwc

    Participant

    Oh, wait, also important! In Buddypress Component Setup on the dashboard, I’ve got Friends (‘Allows the creation of friend connections between users.’) disabled.

    @stwc

    Participant

    Hmm.

    Clicking through from an activity stream icon for an uploaded pic using BPAlbum+ yields the following error, which is very odd:

    Fatal error: Call to undefined function friends_check_friendship() in D://xampp/htdocs/sitename/wp-content/plugins/buddypress-links/bp-links-classes.php on line 649

    So I guess that might be where the conflict is coming in. Odd, though, because I tried disabling BuddyPress Album+ earlier to check if it was causing conflicts, and it didn’t seem to solve the issues I was having with Links.

    I was logged in as a testuser, different from the user account (admin) that posted the picture with BP Album+.

    I know it’s a functionality error with BPAlbum+, but it’s BPLinks that is returning the error message, so I thought I’d dump it in your lap, if you want to have a look. ;-)

    Hopefully a useful data point though.

    Bug report: Activating ‘BuddyPress Forums Extras – Activity’ kills Quoting on my install. Same issue existed with 0.1.9b3.

    Not sure what ‘Activity’ is meant to do, actually, so I’m not too worried — just wanted to check it out.

    This was with ‘Forum index’, ‘RSS Feeds’ and ‘Quoting’ active only.

    Wow, thanks for the link to your mod of registered-users-only-2, r-a-y. Hadn’t noticed that. Works flawlessly so far — no endless looping on Firefox.

    (Man it is so hard to keep up on what’s happening here… but I guess the hubbub is a good thing.)

    @stwc

    Much discussion of this has happened already.

    I use the registered-users-only-2 plugin, but it has been going into infinite loops on me when logging out and loggin in as another user for testing purposes with the most recent BP update, and I haven’t tracked down what’s happening there yet.

    What is all this extending people want to do with forums (is bbPress) I am having trouble wrapping my head around what was deemed “weak forum functionality” What is it supposed to do that it already isn’t?

    From my perspective only: I’m working on migrating a busy community of about 1000 users from Vanilla. Now Vanilla itself is just that — basic, but nice and solid forum structure. Unfortunately, Mark, the guy behind it, fractured the vibrant development community around extensions when he jumped the gun on the 2.0 release, reworked the extension repository, badly, in my opinion, and now things are in disarray, sadly, and the 2.0 version, nice as it looks, just isn’t coming very fast, while the 1.x versions, still apparently being maintained and moved forward, have a floundering and disjointed developer community kind of wondering what’s going on. It’s a bit sad to see, as it’s a great little app. It’s just that I think there was a big mistake made in the way that the community website around it (like this one here) was changed, and lost focus on users. It’s gotten better since, the developer site, but I think momentum might have been lost.

    So, anyway. My users have come to expect some basic functionality from a forum, most of which ihas been added through extensions to Vanilla. Things like:

    • Attaching inline images to posts
    • Easy quoting of posts in replies
    • Minor, standard forum structural stuff like new comments since last visit, links to last reply/replier and so on
    • Inline PMs (which, in my case, will be moved to BP private messages when I do the jump)
    • Individual hread pagination/navigation in the forum view
    • Ways to thank (ie vote up, ‘like’, whatever) posts
    • Buttons on textareas for basic tinyMCE-like functionality

    And lots of other little niceties like that. I am determined to make the transition from Vanilla to BP as smooth and seamless as possible for my users (many of whom are developers and sophisticated web users, many of whom aren’t), and so the little things have been much on my mind. I want to provide them with a core forum experience that replicates as closely as possible what they’ve been used to for the past few years, but with all the other BP goodness and blog hosting with WPMU and all the rest extending it.

    Pretty much all of that is now covered by plugins (or even core BP stuff) from etiviti (rich!) and Boone and others, thank goodness. But until literally the last couple of weeks, a lot of the plugin functionality to fill in those gaps, available on standalone bbPress installs through plugins written for bbPress, wasn’t available in Buddypress’s integrated version. So I am deeply thankful to folks working on that stuff and porting it to work natively in BP.

    So, for me, it’s not that there’s anything intrinsically wrong with BP’s forum functionality as provided by bbPress, but there are just a whole bunch of nice little things that people don’t think about much until they’re no longer there that I want to make sure my userbase doesn’t miss if we make the move.

    Again — that’s just my own personal story with the site I’m currently working on. And yes, I am well aware that Buddypress isn’t about replicating or extending the kind of bog-standard forum style we’re all used to, it’s kneedeep in the MyFace-y Spacebook-y Twitteriffic social networking hoohah that is so au courant these days. All good.

    In my case, it’s not a matter of everything looking like a nail because I have a hammer in my hand, honestly. If all my work with BP to tweak it towards something that will please my users doesn’t pan out, I won’t end up using it for this particular project I’m working on right now — but I’m so close I can taste it. ;-) Learning BP is an end in itself, as well.

    I have to admit that I’m utterly mystified, still, by actions and hooking stuff into other stuff.

    Thanks, though, 3sixty and r-a-y.

    Done, but it does come to mind (and I’ve mentioned it in the ticket) that having all stickies from all groups be sticky in the forums view might mean WAY too many sticky threads.

    Suggestion: only threads stuck by the sitewide admin be sticky in the /forums/ view as opposed to the /groups/groupname/forum view.

    @stwc

    But that said, I agree with people upthread that getting things rock-solid before feature-creep is always a good idea.

    @stwc

    Feature request!

    I’m not sure what the best approach to UI would be, but I’d love to be able to have a short-and-easy way to have users copy image embed code to post their uploaded images in forum threads (or wherever), since they’re already on the server (and many people aren’t all that handy with the ol’ basic HTML).

    That would be most excellent.

    (+1 for Group Albums and All Users’ Photos, too.)

    Excellent — looking forward to messing with it, when you’re ready to share! Another piece of the puzzle. ;-)

    @stwc

    Been chasing this down myself… seems that sticky threads are sticky in the site.com/groups/groupname/forum/ view but not in the site.com/forums/ view, which seems weird, because if I understand it, both views render the list with the same forums-loop.php…

    @stwc

    Heh. It is funny and very germane, the idea that using groups rather than the forum would marginalize. I totally agree with you though — it’s testament to the importance of the forum model that that’s where the good stuff happens, even here.

    Absolutely — keep stuff happening here. The group just might be useful for people to see who else is interested in working on extending bbPress, not for discussion per se.

    no theme edit but it traverses the dom tree on the bp-default theme

    Excellent, and thanks. I’ll be having a look, because that will make my clumsy attempts to do the same thing to get a quote-selected-text modification working a bit easier, I hope.

    I am very interested in building up functionality in the bbPress Forums component of BP — weak forum functionality will be the dealbreaker in a new deployment I’m working on for an existing community. The fact that the bbPress community is quite moribund (and the tendency in discussing it here tends to be to direct people there, despite the fact that there’s an even greater paucity of documentation and resources ‘there’), and we need to rewrite or create new extensions for stuff within BP anyway makes things a little difficult for dilettante coders like myself!

    Not a complaint or a derail — just saying that I’m happy to see other people thinking about beefing up bbPress within BP. I figured what the heck, and created a group, here: https://buddypress.org/groups/extending-bbpress-within-buddypress

    Please, do share, and join the group if you’re interested!
