BP Album+ || New Features Requests and Discussion

    @foxly

    If you need a free image gallery or photo album for BuddyPress, BP Album+ is probably the plugin you’re looking for. BP Album+ adds instant, FaceBook style photo albums to all of your user’s profiles.

    You can always get the most up-to-date version from the WordPress plugin repository at this link:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-album/

    Or, if you like living on the bleeding-edge of BuddyPress development, you can get the latest beta here:

    http://foxly.ca/bp-album-1_6_BETA.zip

    ======

    This forum thread is for discussing new features the community would like to see in future releases of the BP Album+ plugin.

    All ideas are welcome, no matter how crazy, bandwidth-intensive, or strange …but the final call on what goes into the plugin and when will be made by the development team.

    Photos and user interfaces are a uniquely “visual” thing, so when posting an idea to this thread, please try to include a LINK to a website that’s doing the thing you want included in the plugin. For original functions that don’t exist *anywhere* yet, draw a sketch of your idea in a paint program and post a link to the image.

    This will make it much easier for users that don’t speak English to understand your idea.

    So, Let’s get started!

    As to per user group permissions for upload abilities and levels of storage etc, I wanted to give you a link of another plugin that may help

    http://www.primothemes.com/post/s2member-membership-plugin-with-paypal/

    So far it seems to be a pretty robust and amazing plugin. It would be nice to see it integrate with albums in the future. That would allow easy creation of user levels thus giving us the ability to control who can do what with albums and maybe even how much they can do.

    anyhow, just an idea.

    I do want to take a moment to thank you for such an awesome gallery plugin. I absolutely love it and really find myself looking forward to Mondays for the first time in a very long time. lol… luv them betas

    @hlna. Only one upload for now, it will be * magnificent * Thumb generation on the user site. Color correction, rotating imaged, I’l be like a whole remote end for BP album!

    ^F^

    Oh: yes, and we can automatically import Flickr Albums to Album. But the user has to send them an API key to make sure they have permission.!

    That is all outstanding the development and pace of Album is really impressive.

    It’s expected that the user would have to authorise access to their flickr acount, they shouldn’t have a problem with that, the bpdev plugin required the user to get and enter a flickr ID.

    With that plugin you can already code that into your theme yourself, when user is a subscriber show upload, when he/she is not, then hide and give a nice message. Look at the advanced tab in the plugin.

    @ Foxly

    Nice cool ideas, but what I would like to see then would be to disable all those features, I won’t need that many features, only need picture upload with albums. :)

    I agree with Xevo. Instead of more features usability should be the most important issue currently.

    Andy mentioned it allready here: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/bp-album-new-features-requests-and-discussion/page/2#post-43485

    Honestly though, before adding any bells and whistles, just make sure that uploading/editing/deleting a photo and album works perfectly. That’s the main thing.

    – Upload one or multiple images in one go.

    – Allow the creation of albums, add/move/delete photos in albums and albums themselves.

    – Allow photo attachments on activity stream posts – extend the activity stream posting interface.

    If that works perfect, i would also like to see new features, but only from then on.

    +1 21cdb, I think it is key what Andy mentioned indeed. Impressive development guys!

    I would add one more feature – Enable an Album Tab in Groups, so that users can post a picture to a “Group Album” instead to their own user album.

    I’m excited for the new realease today! Keep up the awesome work!

    It needs a share button if in public mode, add a tweetmeme button :TweetMeme finds the hottest stories from twitter for you to retweet.

    code to add it:

    @21cdb – I’m very much with you on that one! Albums in Group!

    Social Media is about connecting (groups) and sharing. In my bass community on http://basshive.net the group creators would like to call people to show photos in a better way than with the “Group Documents” plugin…

    Same here, looking forward to the group albums. I’m all up for small stable version of the plugin. Why would anyone seriously want a tweetmeme button in there though? That’s something that should be customly inserted if you ask me.

    +1 for getting basic functionality locked down and released.

    (insert sob story about delaying/re-designing current project for this plugin)

    I think this has been mentioned. But I would like to a see a mysite.com/photos/

    This would show all the photos that everyone has uploaded. Then you can organize by most replies, most recent, etc. This would be done the road though :)

    Exactly my thoughts, I for one, don’t want to have anything to do with Twitter.

    Feature request!

    I’m not sure what the best approach to UI would be, but I’d love to be able to have a short-and-easy way to have users copy image embed code to post their uploaded images in forum threads (or wherever), since they’re already on the server (and many people aren’t all that handy with the ol’ basic HTML).

    That would be most excellent.

    (+1 for Group Albums and All Users’ Photos, too.)

    But that said, I agree with people upthread that getting things rock-solid before feature-creep is always a good idea.

    BP-Album devs must be in serious code mode. @foxly has gone dark! Gladly chilling on my release until this gets done

    Users do want to share their photos to friends on twitter or facebook plus it drives traffic to your site…

    Over all, I want a rock stable album plugin!

    Groups, groups, GROUPS!!! :D

    That’s the only reason I’m not using this plugin right now. Multiple albums would be nice, too. But I honestly think group albums are up there with “This should be standard” features. Forget all the would-be-nice options for now. Make sure the core functionality works, make sure the most-requested features are implemented, then add everything else later.

    Please, I’m begging, add groups. I’d even be willing to learn whatever is needed to help code it in. I know a bit of PHP, but have never coded for a plugin before.

    Just a heads-up about a possible conflict with MrMaz’s Buddypress Links, described here.

    I’ll second (once again) what oneupdave says, for me the group album is also a very crucial feature, that’s when I’ll start using the plugin. Furthermore imo the /picture directory mentioned by tosh would be really sweet.

    @foxly: Any news about the upcoming beta?

    Regarding problems with the BuddyPress Links plugin… ;)

    Found the defect.

    The problem is being caused by two blocks of code inside the BPLinks plugin that do not account for the situation where the BuddyPress administrator disables “friend” capabilities for the site.

    When friend capabilities are disabled, calling the friends_check_friendship() function will crash the user thread. We handle this problem in BP Album+ by wrapping all calls to this function in a function_exists(‘friends_check_friendship’) statement, only calling the function if it is enabled.

    This is a sneaky, subtle defect that could easily be missed during testing; fortunately, BPLink’s clean, well-documented source code made it easy to isolate and correct the problem.

    Here’s a simple patch:

    1) In “bp-links-classes.php” at line 650

    REPLACE:

    if ( $link_owner_user_id && $link_owner_user_id != $bp->loggedin_user->id && friends_check_friendship( $link_owner_user_id, $bp->loggedin_user->id ) ) {

    $status_opts[] = self::STATUS_FRIENDS;

    }

    WITH:

    if (function_exists(‘friends_check_friendship’)) {

    if ( $link_owner_user_id && $link_owner_user_id != $bp->loggedin_user->id && friends_check_friendship( $link_owner_user_id, $bp->loggedin_user->id ) ) {

    $status_opts[] = self::STATUS_FRIENDS;

    }

    }

    2) In “bp-links-core.php” at line 1128

    REPLACE:

    return friends_check_friendship( $user_id, $link->user_id );

    WITH:

    if (function_exists(‘friends_check_friendship’))

    return friends_check_friendship( $user_id, $link->user_id );

    else

    return null;

    @21cdb – Its open on my workstation right now, getting written. I’m just checking over some of our source files right now to make sure all of our functions properly deal with the situation that was causing the defect in BP Links. Then it’s back to work on the multiple album capabilities.

    I would guess perhaps 2 or 3 days more work before we post another beta.

    Following that, we’re going to be doing all our dev work through the WordPress SVN, so you’ll be able to download updated files like …every night, if you want to.

    We are currently working on:

    1) Multiple albums for each user

    2) Album-based workflow. Basically a copy of Facebook’s Photo app.

    3) Albums for groups.

    While FaceBook is a good start, nobody has ever implemented an effective albums for groups application before, so there is no “gold standard” for us to copy. You can greatly accelerate the development process by helping us design one.

    We use something called a “user story” to describe BP Album+ from different points of view:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_stories

    Can you guys write a user story from the point of view of:

    1) An administrator

    2) An anonymous user off the Internet

    3) A logged-in member viewing their own profile

    4) A logged-in member viewing a friend’s profile

    5) A logged-in member viewing a stranger’s profile
