In reply to: BuddyPress Forum Move Topic 0.0.1
Good stuff, 3sixty, thanks! Don’t have a need for it yet, but I’ll enjoy digging through the code (and may well need it in future)!
I figured out how to do this (with the help of the Forums Extras plugin) but now I have completely forgotten what I did, sorry. It is possible, though — don’t give up. Hopefully someone else can remember how it’s done.
In reply to: bp-events updateHear hear to that last. I understand that developing Buddypress itself does and should take the bulk of Andy and JJJ (and ?)’s time, but I reckon buddypress.org could also use a useability refresh…
In reply to: bp-events updatePermission isn’t necessary to fork the code, as I understand these things, though I guess maybe it would be the polite thing to do. If I recall the history of this plugin, Erwin took it over from someone else a long time back, I think.
Like Mike said, it’s down to who has time, if they don’t want to wait for Erwin.
It’s defined in default.css. If you want to change it, create a child theme (search on this site for instructions), copy over the _inc/css folder structure, edit the appropriate elements (div#message if I recall correctly) in default.css and you’re good to go.
You may find the Firebug addon for Firefox extremely useful for tracking down and playing with stuff like this, if you don’t already use it.
In reply to: Best WYSIWYG for forumsI supplied code to get a toolbar working in forums here (https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/html-and-formatting-buttonbar-for-forums-posts-code-inside). It works flawlessly on my installs and is easily extensible.
TinyMCE (thanks to Boone for working on it) is just too much of a pain in the butt, I’ve found.
I use a combination of r-a-y’s oembed, my toolbar, and Boone’s update of _ck_’s attachments plugin, and they work together just fine.
If it’s on registration, work with a child theme as described in this thread: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/adding-some-text-to-the-signup-form
Then just prepopulate the fields (assuming it’s static info for all registrants) using standard forms HTML stuff.
If it’s dynamic info, well, same first step, but after that, I’m out of my depth!

I’ll try that, mercime, using the code from the forums index page in my child theme. Means making sure that the code is the same for both ‘versions’, but that’s OK with me, if it works.
I actually got wp_redirect working too, but it’s a bit slower than I’d like, so this would be better.
Only other weird side effect I’m seeing (and failing to track down, as usual), is that posting from the new Forum site front page (the Ajax-appearing form) fails without any error messages.
Posting from site.com/forums/ still works fine with the same form, though. Hmmph.
Thanks, DJPaul.
In the trac ticket you said
Please would you confirm what character set the bbPress database tables have. Is it latin1?
If that was directed to me, could you (this is embarassing) tell me how to do that? I know my way around phpMyadmin more or less, but not sure where to look.
In reply to: New version of Forum Attachments for BuddyPressThat’s not an issue with this plugin I don’t think, nor is it a bug, as far as I know. It’s core, and had always worked completely fine for me.
I do recall having to make template changes for this plugin to work properly, though, so make sure you did that correctly. See the installation page in the codex for this plugin, or the readme.
In reply to: Adding some text to the signup form?Create a child theme (it’s easy — do a search for instructions on how), copy register.php from /plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/registration to /registration in your new child theme (which will just be the default theme plus this change and any other changes you make in future). Edit that registration.php.
Now your new registration page will override the default, and you are safe from having your changes overwritten by future version upgrades!
Any time you want to override anything (particularly styles), you can just copy files from bp-default, preserving folder structure, to your child theme and modify them there. It’s a little confusing at first, but is extremely powerful and useful.
In reply to: Forum tags – I can add them, but can't see themTangentially, I very much like how clicking on tags in the Forum view ajax-filters Forum threads to that tag. Very nice indeed.
In reply to: [New Plugin] BuddyPress Group Forum ExtrasHey etiviti (rich!)
Quick question (feel free not to bother to track it down, though, because it’s kind of an edge case, if you don’t care)…
In this thread, I figured out how to make the default front page of the site be the Forums listing. Sadly, though, since doing that (with the method I outlined at the bottom of the first page), the forum index sunb-plugin is failing (silently).
Any thoughts on a quick fix? (Hopefully it’s a minor thing.)
Only downside I’ve noticed so far is that etiviti’s Forums Index extra fails now (silently).
Gonna ask him if he knows why… can’t find it, myself.
That’s a good idea. I wonder if it’s overkill, though.
Now to find a theme switcher plugin that remembers people’s choices and give that a try!
Tried adding the .htaccess line from that second thread. No joy.
bb-config.php is using utf-8
define( 'BBDB_CHARSET', 'utf8' );Oh dear. In phpAdmin, I see that wp_bb_posts is using latin1_swedish_ci as it’s collation, for some unknown reason. Is that germane? I’m rapidly getting out of my depth here.
Now my next task is to figure out how to let my users set a user preference to see that page (Forums, in my case) as their front page, or Activity.
But that’s a thread for another day!
Sure, I’ll post a ticket to trac and try and have a look at the bbpress stuff.
Success! Thank you, everyone!
Here’s what I did, following mercime’s advice.
1. Created a new page template page-home-tempate.php in the root of my child theme, with content
<?php
/*
Template Name: Home Page
*/
?>
<?php locate_template( array( 'forums/index.php' ), true ); ?>2. Created a new page in WPMU, called it ‘Home’, using that new page template.
3. Set that as my front page in Settings–>Reading
4. Deleted the Forums navigation item from header.php in my childtheme
5. YAY!
